TiVo Shows Off Series 3 at CES ... Again

For the second straight year, DVR pioneer TiVo showed off its Series 3 set-top box at CES, but this time the HDTV-based unit was presented with considerably less fanfare. Now due in late 2006, TiVo Series 3 will include dual HDTV tuners, two CableCard expansion ports, Ethernet, and an external SATA port for external hard-drive expansion. It supports every HDTV resolution possible (as well as standard definition) and comes with a sleek new remote. What's the hold-up, you ask? Apparently, TiVo is too busy losing money on its analog boxes to think much about the next generation, but hopefully the interest the company got at CES will remind TiVo that some people still want to live on the edge. Let's get going on this one, eh guys

Ugh Siegel is right. They were too distracted by selling their stupid subscriptions than to think about how to make real money. If they did they would have arrived at your conclusion Manwich. I think everyone sees that Tivo could have been the Microsoft of DVRs. But rather they are going the way of apple and commodore, inventing a market they will never own. Watch sat radio.. they are going the same foolish path. As is broadband on cell phones.

Selling more boxes and getting rid of subscription fees wont help Tivo make money. Their mistake was not licensing out their technology early on. Instead, everyone else built their own and do not need Tivo now (e.g., DirectTV). That's why theyre losing money.

And how much per month will they demand for this unit? Maybe TiVO should stop trying to make money by fleecing people for monthly fees and make money by selling quantity and licenses to other manufacturers. One has to wonder if their sales wouldn't go through the roof if there were monthly fees. There were no monthly fees for VCR's and there are no monthly fees for DVD recorders. TiVO should wake up.
