During Windows XP setup, you receive a message similar to:

Fatal Error: An error has been encountered that prevents setup from continuing.
One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.
Press OK to view the setup log file.

This error is symptomatic of Setup not being able to read files from the Windows XP CD.

To attempt to workaround this problem:

1. Inspect the Windows XP CD for scratches. If you find signs of damage, contact Microsoft for a replacement:

In the United States, call (800) 360-7561, Monday through Friday, 5:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. Pacific time.

In Canada, call (800) 933-4750, Monday through Friday, 5:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. Pacific time.

2. If there is no sign of damage, and you are upgrading from a previous version of Windows:

        A. Copy the CD to your disk by using a CMD prompt, xcopy <CD-ROM>\I386\*.* C:\I386\*.* /s /e.

        B. Type c:\i386\winnt32.exe.

3. If you computer is not currently running Windows:

        A. Start your computer from a Windows 98 Startup disk or a Windows ME Startup disk.

        B. Insert the Windows XP CD in the CD-ROM drive.

        C. Type xcopy <CD-ROM>\I386\*.* C:\I386\*.* /s /e.

        D. Type c:\i386\winnt.exe.
