After you repair a failed installation of a Windows XP service pack by using a Windows XP original release version CD-ROM, the Windows Update Web site, and the Microsoft Update Web site, no longer scan for updates. If you inspect the %SystemRoot%\Windowsupdate.log file, you see an error similar to:

0x800700B6 The Windows Update ActiveX Control is not the right version.

This problem results because the repair replaces version 6 of the Windows Update ActiveX Control with version 4.

To resolve this problem:

1. Open a CMD.EXE window.

2. Type the following commands, pressing Enter after each line:

CD /D %SystemRoot%\System32 DEL /F /Q Cdm.dll DEL /F /Q Iuengine.dll DEL /F /Q Wuapi.dll DEL /F /Q Wuauclt.exe DEL /F /Q Wuauclt1.exe DEL /F /Q Wuaucpl.cpl DEL /F /Q Wuaueng.dll DEL /F /Q Wuaueng1.dll DEL /F /Q Wucltui.dll DEL /F /Q Wups.dll DEL /F /Q Wuweb.dll
3. Download and extract it to the TEMP folder.

4. Right-click the Wusetup.inf in the TEMP folder and press Install.

5. Shutdown and restart Windows XP.
