After you repair a failed installation of a Windows XP service pack by using a Windows XP original release version CD-ROM, the Windows Update Web site, and the Microsoft Update Web site, no longer scan for updates. If you inspect the %SystemRoot%\Windowsupdate.log file, you see an error similar to:

0x800700B6 The Windows Update ActiveX Control is not the right version.

This problem results because the repair replaces version 6 of the Windows Update ActiveX Control with version 4.

To resolve this problem:

1. Open a CMD.EXE window.

2. Type the following commands, pressing Enter after each line:

3. Download http://download.windowsupdate.com/v6/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/windowsupdateagent20-x86.exe and extract it to the TEMP folder.

4. Right-click the Wusetup.inf in the TEMP folder and press Install.

5. Shutdown and restart Windows XP.
