Microsoft Word 2000 is driving me crazy. Every time I type an Internet URL (e.g., http://www.mydomain.com) or Uniform Naming Convention (UNC) network path (e.g., \\myserver\files), Word converts the text to a hyperlink. I can backspace once to remove the hyperlink and leave the text, but I'm tired of doing that constantly. I've looked around in the Options command on the Tools menu but can't seem to find a way to change this behavior. How can I make the madness stop?
The behavior you mention is part of Word's AutoFormat feature. To stop Word from automatically converting URLs and UNC pathnames to hyperlinks, select AutoCorrect from the Tools menu. Click the AutoFormat As You Type tab. Clear the Internet and network paths with hyperlinks check box under the Replace as you type section, as Figure 1 shows, and click OK. Word will cease its habit of converting these types of entries to hyperlinks.
