Microsoft security program manager Jasper Johannson has published an article, “Help: I Got Hacked. Now What Do I Do?” The article raises that question, outlines over half a dozen things that you can't do to correct the problem, and finally arrives at the conclusion that the only thing to do is to format the drive and rebuild the entire system since you can't trust your latest backups because you might not be able to truly determine when the intrusion actually began. Johansson points out that by installing patches an extreme remedy might not be required.
