Microsoft Eases Frustrations in Second Weekend of Surface Pro Sales

With a frustrating launch weekend behind it, Microsoft faced the second weekend of Surface with Windows 8 Pro sales in the United States and Canada with much broader distribution and far more units to sell. And it appears to have caught up with demand, even of the eagerly-sought-after 128GB version of the device.

Please refer to "Surface Pro Delights, Disappoints at Launch" and "Microsoft Promises to Address Surface Pro Supply Issues This Week" for more details about the opening launch weekend for Surface Pro.

“We are excited by the demand for Surface Pro and continue to work around the clock to meet that demand with production and get new inventory into retail,” a statement attributed to the Surface team reads.

On Saturday, Microsoft opened up a new reservation system for its 128GB Surface Pro tablet. Customers who ordered the device before the inventory depletes a second time will receive it before March 1, Microsoft says. And unlike on the opening weekend, customers who visited the Microsoft Store online were able to do just that: The 128GB Surface Pro remained in stock throughout the weekend.

A trusted source at Microsoft tells me that inventory levels for this second round of sales were much higher than what was available for the launch. But the second (expected) pending inventory depletion could take us well into March, especially for 128GB units.

Of course, Microsoft Store isn’t the only place to purchase the Surface Pro, and Microsoft also addressed supply issues at its retailer partners. It said that “many Best Buy stores” in the United States had Surface Pro units for sale in stores over the weekend and that those locations that do not will let customers reserve one. Staples, meanwhile, is getting only 64GB Surface Pro units for some reason, and those stores that don’t have them in stock will let you order one online.

In Canada, things are still a bit more problematic. Customers can reserve only 64GB Surface Pro devices at this time, at Best Buy and Future Shop, and Staples has some stock online only. There are apparently no 128GB Surface Pros available in Canada at this time, and Microsoft says there are more details to come on 128GB Surface Pro availability in Canada.

Of course, even Canada has it good by some standards. Microsoft has yet to announce international availability of Surface Pro at all.

I don't think the supply is as good as you say.

1. Local Staples will only let one order at a kiosk which shows out of stock.

2. Best Buy's in Boston, Stamford CT and NY show no availability at any stores

3. Microsoft Store Online is a ship on or before 3/1, but no sign yet they are shipping anything.
BTW Microsoft Store is not run by Microsoft, but Digital River.

None of what Microsoft is doing is benefitting the vast partner ecosystem. They are only allowing the aforementioned retailers to buy - in volume - directly from their supply chain. There has still been no word given by Microsoft to their authorized distributors as to when they can purchase quantities of stock to supply to resellers. I asked all of the head purchasing managers of all of Microsoft's authorized distributors in Canada (Ingram Micro, ASI, Synnex, and Tech Data) as to when they can expect them and they have all stated that Microsoft has not given them any timeframe as to when they can purchase them - nor any SKU's, which is the first step to getting ETA's - despite recurring requests from prospective resellers, to which I count myself. Usually they will get SKU's about 2 months ahead of time, and they still don't have them! So Microsoft is effectively throwing most of their partner resellers under the bus here for some exclusivity with a few big box stores that have no loyalty to them in the retail environment.

Microsoft need to sort out the supply chain issue, and give a date and price for international otherwise people will start looking else where. the main reason it not selling using Microsofts Partner exosystem is becuase they add far too much money onto the price of the device so a £1000 laptop will be £1500 from the partner network...

Microsoft online store now charges for Microsoft Complete immediately when ordered with a Surface Pro 128GB even though they do not yet ship the machine.

@Matt: that is entirely untrue. Most SRP's are in the 5-8% markup range. You're dreaming if you think that markup is 50%.

I live in Canada, and ordered a 128GB surface pro from the Microsoft store on Day 1 (10 hours after zero-hour), and received it on Day 3.

I haven't checked availability at the brick'n'morter stores though; however, it certainly seems to be available up here...

I was able to score mine on Saturday at a local Best Buy. The Microsoft store mentioned they hadn't received any as of Saturday.

That said, none of this means anything until we find out both numbers and why there have been such issues with supply.

It was still frustrating for me. I tried ordering online on Friday and got a message that my order could not be completed and to call for help. I called Microsoft and was told that he couldn't compete the order since the pro stock changes hadn't been rolled out to their system but I should just "Keep pressing the order button until it works".

I called back a few hours later after attempting a dozen times and was told that I had pressed the order button too many times and could not order again for another 24 hours. Really? He then said that the original order was declined because I didn't include my middle initial from the credit card in the order form. I pointed out that the order form doesn't have a spot for the middle initial and he said that they've been aware of the issue for a while but are having trouble getting the site updated. He also claimed that he couldn't do a manual order for me using any credit card because my microsoft account was locked out and their software wouldn't let him do an order. Isn't this the world's largest software company?

24 hours later I still couldn't order even when creating a new microsoft account. Finally on Sunday I called again and was given a manual order by the support rep. Microsoft still has a lot to learn about ecommerce...
