Building on the success of the “Mastering SharePoint 2010” seminars, the presenters have updated the content to cover the latest and greatest SharePoint product: SharePoint 2013. While SharePoint 2013 is relatively new on the marketplace, the presenters have been working with SharePoint 2013 for well over a year, and have implemented it with a number of clients in production environments. While similar to SharePoint 2010 in many respects, SharePoint 2013 introduces a number of new features and capabilities that are important to understand.

This course will help attendees understand key differences between SharePoint 2010 and 2013, and understand the advantages and challenges involved in implementing SharePoint 2013 or upgrading from a previous version. A common concern of organizations using the SharePoint product line is that they aren’t effectively using the tools provided by the SharePoint platform and have ended up with an expensive “file share on steroids.” These courses will help you understand how other organizations are crafting a “right-sized” solution from the SharePoint toolset and realizing real business benefits through the use of specific tools and features.

We’ll pay special attention to the development capabilities of SharePoint 2013 around workflows and forms, since many different organizations can benefit from the use of these technologies. In addition, we’ll cover the Business Intelligence (BI) capabilities of SharePoint, since this is another incredibly powerful set of tools that can save organizations a great deal of money, and enhance the way they do business.

Session 1: Design and Architecture Fundamentals

This first session kicks off the series by imparting wisdom and best practices on what organizations of varying sizes are implementing in terms of the foundation for the SharePoint 2010 solutions they are then building. Key topics will be covered to allow attendees to craft “roadmaps” that meet their organization’s unique needs.Session Details


Session 2: Configuring the Environment Part I: Building a Solid Foundation

Session 2 builds upon the foundation created in Session 1 by covering the process of installing and customizing the SharePoint software. Best practices and pitfalls will be covered from the installation process to creating the site collections and implementing effective navigation and branding.Session Details


Session 3: Configuring the Environment Part II: Tools and Features

Session 3 delves into the main “containers” and “moving parts” of the SharePoint 2013 environment that end users will be working with every day, and are arguably the most important components of a successful SharePoint implementation.Session Details


Session 4: Workflows and Forms in SharePoint 2013

In this session Ulysses will present SharePoint and it’s out of the box tools as an alternative to Visual Studio and ASP.NET applications. SharePoint’s out of the box features coupled with SharePoint Designer, InfoPath, and SSRS integration makes it a contender as an application host that rivals that of custom Visual Studio applications not to mention the upgradeability and application host benefits provided by SharePoint itself.Session Details


Session 5: Building SharePoint Business Intelligence Applications

If SharePoint’s out of the box features simply do not fit the bill, there are still tremendous benefits to building an application by embedding the application logic within SharePoint itself. Session Details


Session 6: SharePoint Governance Best Practices

In this session Colin will present a framework for governance with respect to SharePoint 2013. Colin will discuss the importance of governance with respect to upgradeability, support, security, compliance, and feature delivery – without a solid governance plan in place a SharePoint environment can quickly degrade and lose user confidence in SharePoint itself.Session Details



Colin Spence, MCP and MCTS SharePoint, is a Partner at Convergent Computing (CCO) and manages the SharePoint Practice there. He currently specializes on the design, implementation and support of SharePoint 2010 and 2013 business solutions with a focus on customization, business process and application design. He's been with CCO for more than 20 years and has provided a wide range of IT related services to hundreds of organizations. He is a co-author of Microsoft SharePoint 2013 Unleashed, Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Unleashed as well as numerous other books on SharePoint and Microsoft technologies, and has written white papers and presented for Microsoft and other industry leaders. He has contributed to numerous other Sams Publishing titles on Microsoft Windows Server technologies, as well as Network World, Windows IT Pro, and and has presented at TechEd. Ulysses Ludwig is a Microsoft Certified Solutions Developer and SharePoint Architect at ExpertAssist LLC located in the heart of Silicon Valley. He has worked with SharePoint since 2003, when he started creating SharePoint Portal Server 2003, and since then he has worked with hundreds of clients. Additional areas of focus include SharePoint 2007/2010/2013 business process management, integrated reporting, training, manufacturing solutions, business applications, workflows, forms, policies, and extranet solutions for medium and large organizations. Projects completed include numerous installations, upgrades, migrations, workflow projects, forms projects, customizations, search customization projects, upsizing, downsizing, troubleshooting engagements, as well as several webcast and one-day seminars for Penton media. He particularly enjoys the challenges of extending upon basic out-of-the-box functionality to meet business challenges, providing training to administrators and end users, and providing detailed “how to” documentation.
