VMware Expands Cloud Management Offering

At this week’s VMworld Europe 2012 conference in Barcelona VMware announced several new and updated products to expand its cloud and virtualization management offerings. VMware’s new cloud management solutions build on the the software defined datacenter platform that they presented in their vCloud Suite 5.1 announcements at the previous VMworld 2012 held in San Francisco. The management of the cloud is the next layer of the virtual IT infrastructure and VMware’s new cloud management products simplify and automate management by enabling IT to manage services across heterogeneous clouds. VMware announced four products at VMworld Europe 2012 to enable cloud management: vCloud Automation Center 5.1 – An all new addition to the VMware product line-up, vCloud Automation Center 5.1 is based on the DynamicOps product which VMware acquired in June 2012. vCloud Automation Center 5.1 enables policy-based provisioning across VMware-based private and public clouds. It supports multiple hypervisors including Hyper-V as well as Amazon Web Services. vCloud Automation Center 5.1 will be integrated with VMware’s vCloud Director 5.1 and will allow authorized administrators, developers and business users to request new cloud services and applications or to manage existing resources using a self-service portal. vCenter Operations Management Suite 5.6 – The updated vCenter Operations Management Suite 5.6 uses analytics to proactively manage VM performance, capacity and configurations. It supports Microsoft Windows OSs, SQL Server, Exchange, SharePoint, as well as Oracle and custom Java applications. VMware presented research showing that the vCenter Operations Management Suite increases efficiencies and provides a 59% costs savings as opposed to running vSphere standalone without the vCenter Operation Management Suite.  vFabric Application Director 5.0 – vFabric Application Director has also been updated and it enables you to define and deploy multi-tier application...More

VMworld 2012: NEC Announces new R320c Fault Tolerant Server

At VMworld 2012 in San Francisco Hiro Matsunami, Senior Manager Product Management Servers & Systems Software Division and Chas Weber, Director Strategic Alliances of NEC briefed me about NEC’s upcoming R320c fault tolerant server. The new R320c is the sixth generation of NEC fault tolerant servers. NEC first began manufacturing fault tolerant servers back in 2000.  Unlike general purpose servers which are rendered inoperable when a major component fails, fault tolerant servers like the R320c are designed to withstand all types of component failures with no downtime. The R320c has fully redundant system components. Internally, there are two system modules each of which contains its own motherboard CPU and RAM. The two modules run in lockstep with same instructions executing on both the system modules  at the same time. If there is a component failure in one of the system modules the other module will continue running with no interruption of service.  The R320c provides 99.999% uptime right out of the box. The new R320c is a 4U system that features two eight core Intel Sandy Bridge Xeon E5-2670 CPUs. It supports up to 256GB of RAM and four 10GB onboard Ethernet NICs. In addition, the Power Supply Unit (PSU) is compliant with the 80 PLUS Platinum standard. Hiro and Chas shared that one of the most frequent questions that they received during the VMworld 2012 conference was about the differences between NEC’s R320c fault tolerant server and VMware’s software based Fault Tolerant feature. Although the technologies are similarly named and have similar goals they are implemented very differently and have quite different characteristics. VMware’s Fault Tolerant feature only works at the virtual machine level and it only supports a single virtual CPU making it unsuitable for resource intensive workloads. Multi CPU support is in the works but it is not currently available. Further, because VMware’s Fault Tolerance is implemented in software there is a pe...More

VMworld 2012: HP Releases VMware View Optimized Thin Clients

One of the growing trends in the industry is the move toward hosted desktop virtualization also known as Virtual Desktop Infrastructure or VDI.   VDI deployments are often used in highly secure implementations like the military and the Department of Defense. At VMworld 2012 I met with with Christian Jones, HP Thin Client product marketing manager to talk about HP’s new line of thin clients.  We started by talking about the new t310 thin client that you can see below.         The t310 has absolutely no moving parts and thanks to the embedded PCoIP support it can process data streams send from VMware View servers up to five times faster that previous generations of thin clients. For example, Christian said that tests have shown the new t310 was capable of displaying video with over 60 frames per second clearly demonstrating that the device would not be the bottleneck in a VDI implementation. The t310 only works with VMware View and its priced at $369. You can learn more about the t310 at: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/14424_div/14424_div.PDF. Christian also showed me their new t410 line of thin clients. The t410 line comes in two flavors: a traditional thin client called the t410 Smart Zero Client and a new t410 All in One Smart Client. The Smart Zero Client that you can see below can automatically configure itself for the VMware, Citrix or Microsoft protocols. The Smart Zero client costs $269.     The t410 All in One Client possesses a built-in monitor but it is unique in that its works using Power over Ethernet (PoE) which really streamlines the device’s footprint and power utilization. The t410 All in One is priced at $429. You can see the t410 All in One below.     You can find out more about the t410 All in One at: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/hp-information/thin-client-solutions/t410.html...More

VMworld 2012: DataCore SANsymphony-V Virtualizes Storage

One of the most interesting meetings I had at this year’s VMworld 2012 was with Steve Houck Chief Operating Officer of DataCore Software. Steve explained that DataCore has been in the storage virtualization business  for the past 14 years and that SANsymphony-V is the ninth release of their flagship product.  Just like VMware virtualizes compute and memory resources, DataCore’s SANsymphony-V abstracts and virtualizes storage resources. SANsymphony-V is Windows based software that creates a virtual storage layer on top of whatever physical storage your organization has. It supports all of the popular hypervisors including VMware vSphere, Microsoft’s Hyper-V and Citrix XenServer. It also integrates with Microsoft System Center and VMware’s vCenter. SANSymphony-V provides all of the features you’d expect to find in a storage infrastructure product including: Data pooling Online snapshots Continuous Data Protection (CDP) and recovery Thin provisioning Auto-tiering Synchronous and asynchronous replication Disk migration Load balancing RAID striping SANSymphony-V automatically manages all of the underlying storage operations. It allows you to create up to 15 different tiers for your multiple storage devices and it can automatic move data between tiers based on how hot the data is. For instance, if a given application hits a high number of reads for a given piece of data SANSymphony-V can automatically move that data to higher performance storage. SANsymphony-V is priced based on the number of nodes and capacity and a typical installation costs about $10,000 dollars....More

VMworld 2012: NEC’s Cloud in Vault

Today many companies are looking into the different cloud computing offerings provided by different vendors. Most of those vendors provide off-site services where the business has little of no control over the servers or the data. Trusting security, data integrity and performance levels to the cloud vendor. At this past VMworld 2012 I met with NEC’s Bill Michael, Director Cloud Services to discuss NEC’s new Cloud in a Vault service. NEC’s Cloud in a Vault takes a completely different tack on cloud computing by offering a private cloud that’s built entirely according to the customer’s requirements. NEC’s Cloud in a Vault is oriented toward enterprise customers like health care and financial institutions where scalability, security and compliance are of critical importance. Unlike other cloud appliances that are emerging, NEC’s Cloud in a Vault is not a prepackaged appliance. Instead, it is custom built according to the needs to the customer and the customer doesn’t need to pay out an upfront purchase price. Instead, they pay a monthly rental cost that varies according to the compute power, storage, networking, services and levels of compliance that they require. NEC’s Cloud in a Vault can be deployed either in one of NEC’s datacenters or it can be deployed on-premise. If the customer first decides to deploy at an NEC site they can later retract the deployment and move it to one of their own locations. Another unique feature is the fact that NEC uses Traveller's Insurance to actually insure the levels of SLA that are required. If there is an outage then Traveller’s Insurance will pay the business the actual costs of the outage. That’s very different for other cloud providers that might give you some discount on the cost of their service if there is some interruption of service....More

VMworld 2012: Veeam Explorer for SAN Snapshots

On the second day of VMworld 2012 I met with Ratmir Timashev President and CEO of Veeam Sotware. Veeam is primary known for their market leading Veeam Backup & Replication product which started in the VMware space. Last December Veeam expanded it to support Microsoft Hyper-V as well. Interestingly, Ratmir has a long history with Windows IT Pro and while working with a former employer he took part in a network hack challenge with Windows NT Magazine (our former incarnation) uncovering several network vulnerabilities in our labs at the time.  Now leading Veeam, Ratmir shared with me some of Veeam’s latest developments with their flagship Veeam Backup & Replication  6.1 product. The next release of Veeam Backup and Replication will contain a feature call Veeam Explorer for SAN Snapshots. The new Veeam Explorer for SAN Snapshots makes it easy to use SAN snaphots to restore entire VMs or select files from the snapshot. Initially, it will only support HP Lefthand SANs but support for other storage systems is planned. Veeam Explorer for SAN will be included in the next version of Veeam Backup & Replication 6.5 which is scheduled to be available in October....More

VMworld 2012: New VMware Releases Targets the SMB

While VMware’s new enterprise oriented vCloud Suite 5.1 garnered the bulk of the media’s attention at VMworld 2012, VMware has not forgotten about SMBs. At this past VMworld 2012 I met with Russell Stockdate, Vice President and General Manager, SMB Solutions for VMware. Russell explained how VMware has just come out with two new releases targeting organization with 1000 or fewer employees: vSphere 5.1 Essentials Plus vSphere 5.1 Standard Edition with Operations Management Russell and I discussed how the SMB faces almost all of the same technical issues as large businesses and enterprises however they have a lot fewer resources to devote to virtualization with most SMBs having no more than 2 people covering virtualization. VMware’s goals with the new SMB releases are to provide enhanced business continuity, better support for mobility and improved automation. One of the big changes that enhances business continuity is the inclusion of the replication engine into both of the new releases. Replication enables DR between different sites. Plus, the new vSphere Data Protection feature provides nondisruptive backups with data deduplication.   These are both high-end features that have been moved into the new SMB releases. The new vSphere Enhanced vMotion capability improves mobility by enabling the movement of VMs and optionally their files between hosts without the requirement for shared storage. For better automated management VMware is planning to include VMware Go Pro their virtualization deployment and migration service to organization buying vSphere 5.1 Essentials and Essentials Plus....More

VMworld 2012: VMware Announces vCloud Suite 5.1

On day one of VMworld 2012 VMware announced the release of their new vCloud Suite 5.1 product line to the more than 20,000 attendees in San Francisco's Moscone Center.  The vCloud Suite represents the next evolution of virtualization where virtualization moves beyond simple server virtualization into what VMware terms the software defined datacenter. The goal of the software defined datacenter is to make IT infrastructure more efficient and agile by extending virtualization and abstraction to the storage and networking portions of the datacenter. Outgoing CEO Paul Martiz noted this is the next step in the evolution of the datacenter. Today over 60% of workloads are virtualization which means virtualization has become the default way for organizations to deploy servers. Over the next three to four years VMware expects this to increase to where 80-90% of all workloads will be virtualized. Martiz also officially handed over the reins of VMware to incoming CEO Pat Gelsinger. Gelsinger, who brings his 30 years of experience with Intel and EMC to VMware, described the vCloud Suite as enabling the abstraction, pooling and automation on IT infrastructure.  To much popular applause he also noted that VMware is ending the unpopular vRAM licensing scheme it adopted with vSphere 5 and is moving to a much simpler per CPU licensing model....More

Windows Partner Conference 2012: August RTM for Windows 8 and Server 2012

If year’s WPC 2012 conference is any indication there’s a ton of partner interest in this year’s new Windows client and server operating system releases. This year’s WPC in Toronto boasts 16,000 attendees from around the globe. To say there’s a lot of excitement around the upcoming Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 releases would definitely be an understatement. One of the big announcements of the day happened during the keynote where Microsoft announced that both Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 were on track to be released to manufacturing in the first week of August 2012. Windows Server 2012 is expected to be generally available in September while Windows 8 is expected to be generally available in October. TechEd 2012: HP Offers New t610 Thin Client

One of the unintended side effects of the growth of virtualization and cloud computing is the resurgence of the thin client. At this past TechEd in Orlando I met with Diana Wong, HP thin client embedded product manager and Karin Taylor Worldwide PR Manager to look at HP’s new t610 thin client PC-like experience for virtualized desktop environments. The t610 thin clients deliver full scale PC power in a small and inexpensive form factor. Built using AMD’s new APU technology the t610 comes with an AMD 64-bit dual-core T56N APU with Radeon HD 63202 Graphics (1.65 GHz, 1 MB L2 cache) processor. It provides DirectX 11 graphics support and has DDR3-1600 RAM with up to 4 GB of capacity. Externally the t610 has a DVI-I and DisplayPort. There are two models: the t610 and the t610 Plus. Externally both have 4 USB 2.0 (2 front/2 rear), 2 USB 3.0 (rear),1 DVI-I, 1 DisplayPort, 2 PS/2, 1 serial, 1 GB RJ-45. Both models also offer built-in WiFi. The slightly larger Plus model adds support for 1 parallel connector and 1 half-height PCIe x4 card slot. The HP t610 units consumes about 65W HP while the t610 PLUS uses about 85W which is less than many light bulbs. For enterprise connectivity the t610 supports DirectAccess, RDP, and BranchCache. It also supports RemoteFX. One of the most interesting things that HP demoed was the t610 thin client’s support for multi-touch. As of June 2012 Windows Embedded 7 is supported by the t610 thin client enabling multi-touch when used in conjunction with a multi-touch monitor like the HP L2105tm. The t610 starts at $399 with Windows Embedded Standard 7 and the HP L2150tm multi-touch monitors lists for $279. You can find out more at HP Thin Client Solutions....More

Check Out the Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 Release Candidates 1

Just like clockwork Microsoft has come out with the release candidates for the next generation of the Windows client and server operating systems. Earlier this year Microsoft projected that they would have the release candidates for Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 available in early June and on June 1st both release candidates were publically available. In this day of ever increasing complexity and OS requirements there’s no doubt that’s the result of some excellent execution on the part of the Microsoft development teams. So what can you expect from Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012? Windows 8 The early talk about Windows 8 is all over the map ranging from “the future of computing” to “the next Vista”.  For the first time since the initial release of Windows 1.0 Microsoft is coming out with a completely new Windows UI called Metro. Metro is a tile-based UI designed for touch screen tablets and it will run alongside a more traditional Windows 7-like UI. It’s clear that the push behind this is new UI to compete against the iPad. However, many people including  Apple's CEO Tim Cook criticize Microsoft’s attempt to make a single OS work for both devices. The more traditional UI will allow it to be used on desktop and laptops. Even if its true that Windows 8 turns out to be the next Vista it’s  important to remember that while Vista was a failure in the minds of most users it was also the foundation for the super popular Windows 7.  Personally, I’m looking forward to trying Windows 8 on some of the upcoming tablet devices. Some of the most important new features in Windows 8 include: Metro touch-enabled UI New desktop Apps  for quick information including sports, travel news and Bing New Windows store to buy Windows 8 Apps Multi-monitor support Ribbon UI on Windows Explorer USB 3.0 support Windows TO GO allowing booting off USB flash drives Improved power management with application suspend Desktop hypervisor that...More

Microsoft System Center 2012 Enables the Private Cloud 1

This past week Jeff James, Sean Deuby and I attended a Private Cloud Workshop that Microsoft held at their Redmond campus. Brad Anderson, Corporate Vice President Server & Tool Business kicked off this two day event by sharing some interesting statics about the use of System Center in the enterprise as well as stating that System Center has significant advantages in managing the private cloud over all of the competing products. A couple of standout statistics that he mentioned were that Microsoft’s has made a billion dollar investment in the area of systems management and they are also in a unique position to leverage their own experiences in running Microsoft’s global cloud infrastructure. This global infrastructure provides support for Hotmail, Windows Azure, Office 365, Windows InTune and more. Brad also mentioned that 76% of all organizations have Windows Server installed and that System Center was the most popular management suite worldwide and it is used by 50% of all organization with more than 500 PCs. There’s no doubt that the release of System Center 2012 marks some big changes for the product. First, the individual System Center Components can no longer be purchased separately. Instead, there will be just two System Center 2012 editions:  System Center 2012 Standard Edition and System Center 2012 Datacenter edition. This makes a lot of sense when you remember that the different members of the family all provide different bits of functionality but they are all needed to manage a cloud environment. For more information on the new System Center products and licensing you can refer to Jeff James's article at: http://www.windowsitpro.com/blog/virtualization-blog-13/system-center/system-center-2012-rc-ships-showcases-revamped-licensing-branding-strategy-141929 Regarding the private cloud there’s no doubt that the biggest changes are found in the Virtual Machine Manager 2012 (VMM) product.
