Error Says a Management Pack Can't Be Imported Due to Managed Type

Q: I'm trying to import System Center 2012 Virtual Machine Manager Management Packs into System Center Operations Manager 2012 but I'm getting an error that the Management Pack cannot be imported because it has a Managed Type the same as an existing MP.

A: You can't have multiple versions of the System Center 2012 Virtual Machine Manager Management Pack on one Operations Manager Server. The full error is shown below:

Log Name: Operations Manager
Source: OpsMgr SDK Service
Database error. MPInfra_p_ManagementPackInstall failed with exception:

ManagementPack cannot be imported because it contains a Managed Type with the same name as an existing type: Microsoft.SystemCenter.VirtualMachineManager.VirtualMachine
Full Exception: : Database error. MPInfra_p_ManagementPackInstall failed with exception:
Database error. MPInfra_p_ManagementPackInstall failed with exception:

ManagementPack cannot be imported because it contains a Managed Type with the same name as an existing type: Microsoft.SystemCenter.VirtualMachineManager.VirtualMachine

Check the Management Packs installed on the Operations Manager server, and most likely you will find a previous version such as the 2008 SCVMM MP, which you must remove. To remove it, use the Administration workspace in the Operations Manager console, and in the Management Packs area find the previous SCVMM MP and delete it.

A good guide is to only download and install the Management Packs you know you need in your environment. This will help keep the environment as clean as possible.
