Total Running Time: 337 min
Windows PowerShell is the preferred tool for administering and automating SharePoint 2010, 2013, and Office 365. If you've been holding back on learning PowerShell, the time has come to tackle it. There’s no better way to get up to speed, fast, with PowerShell than with SharePoint MVPs Dan Holme and Gary Lapointe as they join forces to accelerate your learning curve in this one-of-a-kind workshop. You’ll be administering and automating SharePoint configuration and management by the end of four intensive and highly practical sessions.
First, Dan Holme delivers his popular PowerShell Jump Start. If you’re new to PowerShell, or new to using PowerShell with SharePoint, you’ll discover just how easy it is to use Windows PowerShell and you’ll learn how to learn PowerShell. Dan will introduce the SharePoint object model and the cmdlets that allow you to build and report the logical structure of SharePoint web applications, site collections, and sites.
Then, Gary guides you through the concepts and skills you need to move from the Management Shell to remote management and scripting. You’ll tackle conditional expressions, iteration, error trapping and more, and you’ll apply what you learn to common SharePoint administrative tasks.
Next, Dan and PowerShell über-guru Gary Lapointe explore what’s new with PowerShell for Office 365 and SharePoint 2013. Learn what it takes to manage on-premise and cloud deployments.
Finally, Gary presents real-world administrative challenges and the PowerShell solutions that solve them. When this journey comes to an end, you’ll be ready to take what you’ve learned back to your own SharePoint farm, and put it all to work!
Session 1: A Practical Jump Start to Administering SharePoint with Windows PowerShell
Join SharePoint MVP Dan Holme for a very practical, super-clear PowerShell jump start. You'll learn that you don’t need to be a scripting guru to use and understand PowerShell and you'll learn how easy it is to manage SharePoint with PowerShell.
This session will equip you to learn and use Windows PowerShell in a SharePoint environment. You’ll master PowerShell fundamentals and you’ll learn how to create and report the logical structure of your SharePoint farm. You’ll also learn where you must make the transition from PowerShell cmdlets to the “dot notation” that unleashes the full power of SharePoint’s object model.
The session will set you up for scripting, automation, and advanced administration tasks covered in subsequent sessions.
Session 2: Go Beyond the Management Shell with SharePoint and Windows PowerShell
Windows PowerShell is so much more than what you can run from the SharePoint 2010 Management Shell command line. To be an effective SharePoint administrator, you need to be able to automate common or complex tasks with scripts that are reusable, tolerant to errors, and sensitive to edge cases or unexpected conditions.
In this session, MVP Gary Lapointe will build on the information learned in the previous session. You’ll learn the concepts and techniques that will set you on the course to becoming a scripting guru. You’ll learn about functions, conditional logic, iteration, and error handling techniques. You’ll also learn how to administer SharePoint from the comfort of your own desktop, using Windows PowerShell remoting. This includes how to connect to your SharePoint environment as well as best practices around session management. This session and the first session, A Practical JumpStart to Administering SharePoint with Windows PowerShell, will give you the PowerShell knowledge necessary to address the use cases in the next session, Automating SharePoint Administration with Windows PowerShell.
Session 3: What’s New in PowerShell in SharePoint 2013 and Office 365
Microsoft made important improvements to PowerShell in SharePoint 2013 and in the newest version of Office 365. In this session, Dan and Gary explore the features and capabilities of PowerShell and how it can be used to automate and configure both on-premise and Office 365 SharePoint farms.
Session 4: Automating SharePoint Administration with Windows PowerShell
Knowing the Windows PowerShell syntax is one thing, knowing the SharePoint API and architecture is another thing. And understanding how to use all that knowledge to automate common tasks is something else entirely.
In this session, MVP Gary Lapointe builds on the previous sessions with real-world examples of Windows PowerShell scripts that take the tediousness out of myriad common, everyday SharePoint administrative tasks. You’ll tackle everything from feature and solution package management, to creating reports of checked out files and effective user permissions, to restoring a list from a detached database.
Throughout this session you’ll augment what you learned in the first two sessions by adding real-world context to each concept, all while producing useful scripts that can serve as the basis for your own SharePoint script library. You’ll leave equipped with practical solutions and inspiration for the possibilities of automating SharePoint administration with Windows PowerShell.
