When you use Windows Explorer on Windows Server 2003 to browse a remote computer, you do not see the Printers and Faxes icon.
If you attempt to use a command line to add a printer to the remote computer, the installation is not successful and you receive:
Operation could not be completed. Either the printer name was typed incorrectly, or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server.
This behavior will occur if the RPC (Remote Procedure Call) endpoint for the spooler is not turned on in Windows Server 2003.
NOTE: The Printers and Faxes icon is a graphical representation of the RPC endpoint, which enables remote administration of printing services.
NOTE: If the Windows Server 2003 computer does not have any local shared printers, the RPC endpoint for the spooler is not created.
NOTE: If the Windows Server 2003 computer has one or more local shared printers, the RPC endpoint is created after the spooler is initialized, which may take a while if multiple local printers exist.
