When you look at the Processes tab in Task Manager, you notice that the Csrss.exe process is consuming 100% of the CPU, and about 200 MB of memory.

If you install Windows Messenger 5.0, a bug in the Service Quality Monitor (SQM) data collection timer, causes this behavior approximately 14 days after you restart Windows or Windows Messenger 5.0.

To resolve this problem, install the latest version of Windows Messenger 5.0.

If you do NOT install the latest version, simply restart Windows or Windows Messenger 5.0 every 14 days.

If you do NOT use Windows Messenger:

1. Right-click the Windows Messenger icon in the notification area and press Open.

2. Use the Tools menu to press Options.

3. Select the Preferences tab.

4. Clear the Run this program when Windows starts box and press OK.

5. Use the File menu to press Close.

6. Right-click the Windows Messenger icon in the notification area and press Exit.
