When you use the Repair option for a local area connection in Windows XP, you receive an error similar to:

The following steps of the repair operation failed: Purging the DNS Resolver Cache. Please contact your network administrator or ISP.

This behavior will occur if the DNS Client (Dnscache) service is NOT started on your computer, because the computer cannot resolve DNS names or locate Active Directory domain controllers.

To resolve this problem:

1. Open a CMD.EXE window.

2.Type REG ADD HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscache /V Start /T REG_DWORD /F /D 2 and press Enter.

3. Restart Windows XP.

4. Right-click Local Area Connection and press Repair.
