When you start a presentation, the first slide is typically a title slide. The title slide will contain placeholders for the title and subtitle.

Follow the instructions in the placeholders to add content to them.

Placeholders themselves do not appear when you deliver a presentation on screen. They only appear in the Normal and Slide views to help you add content to your slide. Once you have added content to a placeholder, that content will appear when you deliver a presentation.

To create a new slide, do one of the following:

  • Click the New Slide button. New Slide button
  • Choose Insert → New Slide.
  • Press Ctrl+M.

The default layout for new slides, Title and Text, includes placeholders for a title and text.

Title and Text slide

If you want to apply a layout other than Title and Text when you create a new slide:

  • Select a layout in the Slide Layout task pane.

You can insert a new slide with a specific layout:

  • Click the drop-down arrow on a slide layout in the Slide Layout task pane and choosing Insert New Slide.

This is somewhat faster than clicking the New Slide button, then applying a layout.

You can configure whether the Slide Layout task pane appears automatically when you create a new slide:

  • Select or deselect Show when inserting new slides, at the bottom of the task pane.

To get to the Slide Layout task pane when it is not visible, do one of the following:

  • Right-click the background of the slide and choose Slide Layout.
  • Click the drop-down arrow in the title bar of the visible task pane and select Slide Layout.

If no task pane is visible, choose View ? Task Pane (or press Ctrl+F1) to turn on the most recently used task pane.

A content placeholder allows you to add non-text content, such as a table, chart, clip art, picture from file, diagram, or movie. To use a content placeholder, select the desired content using the collection of icons in the middle of the placeholder.

When you utilize a placeholder to add an object, and then later delete the object, the placeholder remains. This allows you to use the placeholder to easily add a replacement object. You can delete the placeholder, if desired, by clicking the border of the placeholder and pressing Delete.
