Microsoft Corporation has asked an appeals court to throw out the decision by Judge Ronald Whyte that required it to stop shipping certain products that used Sun's Java, including Windows 98, until it modified them. Microsoft says that Whyte's ruling against it was too broad.

Sun sued Microsoft in late 1997 for illegally tampering with its Java programming language and for violating its licensing contracts and copyrights by shipping products that included a version of Java that didn't pass Sun's compatibility tests. Whyte ruled against Microsoft and the company complied by adding the compatibility Sun required.

A ruling is expected sometime this year
