International Business Machines (IBM) bought a majority stake today in NetObjects, makers of the excellent Fusion WYSIWYG HTML editor. NetObjects will remain a separate company and will continue to market both Windows and Macintosh versions of the product.

"We all benefit if NetObjects is free-standing," said John M. Thompson, group executive for IBM's Software Group.

IBM will begin incorporating Fusion into Lotus Development's Domino Web server. Previously, IBM had tried to buy Vermeer, but it was snatched away by Microsoft. Vermeer made Front Page, a competing HTML editor
