In this introduction to Microsoft’s cloud platform for Windows systems administrators, you'll learn the basics of Windows Azure, and how to provision Windows servers for cloud services or as an extension to existing onsite corporate resources as part of a hybrid cloud solution. Although Windows Azure provides a lot of functionality intended for developers, systems administrators also need to understand how to provision and maintain virtual machines (VMs), understand Azure’s capabilities, and know how they can complement existing onsite services.
Once basic terminology and provisioning skills have been understood, more advanced capabilities are explored in these sessions, such as using Azure storage in the cloud, migrating onsite servers to Azure VMs, providing a backup site for Active Directory, and using Azure for offsite backup. Now is the time to learn about Windows Azure, as cloud and virtualization skills become more important, and Microsoft readies its Desktop as a Service (DaaS) features for Azure, due to appear in 2014. Attendees will leave these sessions with a proper grasp on Azure’s capabilities and know how to perform basic operations with VMs and integration with existing onsite servers.
During this class you will learn how to:
- Configure VMs and networks on Windows Azure
- Extend onsite AD into the Azure cloud
- Configure Windows Backup to work with Azure and access blob storage
Who should attend (skill level, roles): This class is intended for Windows Server systems administrators with no previous experience in Windows Azure
Session 1: Understanding Azure services, terminology, and concepts - 11am ET
In this session, attendees will get an introduction to the Azure infrastructure and terminology required to work with Microsoft’s cloud platform. The session will conclude with a practical guide on how to provision VMs and how to configure virtual networks.
Session 2: Active Directory in the cloud and migrating VMs to Azure - 1pm ET
This session starts by looking at the different options for running AD on Azure. This will be followed by a practical guide to extending onsite AD to the cloud to provide a remote backup site. The session will conclude with a demo of how to migrate a server workload to the cloud.
Session 3: Using Azure for storage and backup - 3pm ET
This session will focus on using Azure for storage and backup. It includes a practical demonstration of how to configure Windows Backup in Windows Server 2012 to work with Windows Azure, and how to extend storage capability into the cloud with Azure blob storage.
