Q. What OSs does System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) 2008 support as sources for physical to virtual (P2V) migration?

A. P2V support varies depending on whether Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) is supported on the OS, because this dictates whether online or offline P2V migration can be used. The source OS has to support VSS for an online P2V, so you can perform online P2V migration with 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista SP1, Windows 2003 SP1, and Windows XP SP2.

You can perform offline P2V migration with Windows 2000 SP4. Windows NT 4.0 cannot be migrated from P2V using SCVMM.
