Database virtualization is a powerful tool for IT departments today as they attempt to prevent server sprawl. Virtualization can help save recurring costs such as power and cooling as well as application installation costs such as Windows and SQL Server licensing.
This three hour class will help DBAs and other IT personnel determine if their workload is a good fit for virtualization. After attending this course, you will better understand virtualization, know whether or not your database server should be virtualized, and gain valuable tuning techniques you can use once your database is virtualized.
You will learn:
- how to determine if your SQL Server database is a good candidate for virtualization.
- Performance Monitor counters which can be used to help you decide if your database server can be virtualized.
- how to get the most from your SQL Servers which have been virtualized.
- how to configure SQL Servers to play nice within a virtual environment without compromising performance.
- which battles to fight and which to let the VMware/Hyper-V admin win.
Session 1: How to Decide if your Database is a Good Candidate for Virtualization
In the first session, we'll look at the pros and cons of moving SQL Servers into a virtual server environment. Like all problems in the database world, there are no hard set answers on whether virtualization is a good idea, but there are some times when virtualizing a SQL Server is the best option and can even save you some money. And then there are times when you'll be shooting yourself in the foot and shouldn't virtualize. By the end of this session, you'll know how to make this decision and how to gather the metrics you need to move forward with virtualization.
Session 2: Optimizing SQL Server Performance in a Virtual Environment
In this session, we'll look over what you should look at within your virtual environment to ensure you are getting proper performance. This will include how to look for CPU performance issues at the host level. We'll also discuss the Memory Balloon drivers – what they do, how you should configure them, and why. We'll discuss memory sharing technologies, which are built into vSphere and Hyper-V, and how they relate to SQL Server. Then we'll will finish with some storage configuration options.
Session 3: Using Storage to Increase Database Performance
In the final session, we'll look at some ways that your storage solution can be configured to increase database performance. Some of the things to consider when selecting the correct RAID level to use will be highlighted, along with a review of how to setup the cache in your storage array or DAS. We'll then look at some of the newer technologies like FLASH Cache to improve the caching abilities of the storage arrays. Finally, you'll learn some of the differences between iSCSI and Fibre Channel and how to use tiered storage from both a performance and finance perspective.
