Sony has finally released a hard disk option for its popular PlayStation 2 video game console. The $99 40GB hard disk add-on comes with a copy of Final Fantasy XI, the most recent addition to the popular Final Fantasy role-playing game series. Like Microsoft's strategy for the hard disk-equipped Xbox, Sony plans to use the new accessory to provide faster cache times and to store new downloadable content for games. Because the PlayStation 2's hard disk is an optional feature, seeing how many game developers take advantage of it will be interesting. Few developers have taken advantage of the Xbox's built-in hard disk. And Microsoft's increased costs for automatically providing a hard disk have led analysts to predict that the company might decide against including a hard disk in the next-generation Xbox
