Q. How do I configure password requirements for mobile devices by using Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2)?
A. The new Messaging & Security Feature Pack for Windows Mobile 5.0 lets you configure password policies from the Exchange server. To do so, follow these steps:
- Start Exchange System Manager (Start, Programs, Microsoft Exchange, System Manager).
- Expand Global Settings.
- Right-click Mobile Services and select Properties.
- Click Device Security.
- Select the "Enforce password on device" check box and configure the required options, such as minimum password length, character combinations, and the time of inactivity that will lock the device. Options also exist to wipe the device after a specified number of failed attempts, how often to refresh, and whether to allow access to devices that don't support the password settings. It's also possible to set exceptions to the policy via the Exceptions button, as the figure at figureshows. Click OK.
- Click OK to the main Mobile Services dialog box.
The next time a device attempts to sync with the Exchange server, an "Attention required" message will be displayed, as the figure at figure shows, and the user will need to accept the new password policy before further synchronization is permitted.
After the new password policy is accepted, you'll need to enter a new password to meet that new password policy, as the figure at figure shows.
Q. How do I perform a Global Address List (GAL) lookup from a Windows Mobile 5 phone?
A. Unlike earlier versions of mobile devices, which could view only local contact information, Windows Mobile 5 devices with the new Messaging & Security Feature Pack installed can query the Exchange Server 2003 GAL in a variety of ways. To find only contact information, perform these steps:
- From the Start menu, select the Contacts mobile applet.
- Select Find Online.
- Enter the name to search for, as the figure shows, and click Find.
- A list of matches will be displayed, from which you can select the desired contact.
To use the GAL when sending an email message when the To or Cc box is selected, click Add Recipient from the Menu. In the "Select a Contact" screen, select Find Online, then enter the name of the user and a list of matches will be displayed, from which you can select the appropriate name, as the figureshows
Q. Where is the remote wipe facility in Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2)?
A. The new Messaging & Security Feature Pack for Windows Mobile 5.0 devices lets you wipe these devices from a management location (which is useful if a mobile device is lost or stolen). However, the facility to perform the remote wipe isn't part of Exchange 2003 SP2; you must download it from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e6851d23-d145-4dbf-a2cc-e0b4c6301453&DisplayLang=en. Once downloaded, extract the MobileAdmin.exe file, then run MobileAdmin.msi and follow the onscreen prompts to install the application. You use the tool via its Web interface ( https://<exchange server>/mobileadmin ).
Q. How do I use the remote wipe facility on Messaging & Security Feature Pack for Windows Mobile 5.0 devices?
A. You can reset these devices via the MobileAdmin Web site. To do so, follow these steps:
- Access the ActiveSync Mobile Admin Web page https://<exchange server>/mobileadmin.
- Click the Remote Wipe link, as the figureshows.
- Enter the mailbox name or SMTP address of the user who uses the device and click the search icon, as the figure.
- From this window you can initiate two actions, as the shows. The Delete action breaks the partnership between the device and the Exchange server. The Wipe action remotely wipes the selected device (but not extra installed storage devices) of all information.
- The status will change to "Wipe initiated" and an action of "Cancel Wipe" will be displayed, as the figureshows. If the device is retrieved and used again, you need to activate the Cancel Wipe option or else when the device is used, it will wipe on each sync.
If direct push technology is enabled, the device will be reset almost immediately; if direct push is not enabled, the next time ActiveSync is performed from the device, the device will be wiped and restarted to a blank "new" state. If you check the transaction log link via the Mobile Admin Web site, you'll see the actions of the wipe, as the figureshows.

Q. Why aren't users receiving email messages from Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 File System Resource Manager (FSRM) actions.
A. You can find out more about the communication problems that exist between the File System Resource Manager and Exchange in the Microsoft article "The File Server Resource Manager on a Windows Server 2003 R2-based computer does not send e-mail notifications to the SMTP server" ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914678/en-us ). A hotfix exists, but you can work around the problem by simply turning off basic authentication on the SMTP virtual server. The procedure is described in the article.
