Sony Announces Super-AIT

more than 1TB on one cartridge, the first such achievement in the storage industry. Drives supporting the first generation of the new technology are shipping to the company's OEM partners this month. S-AIT drives are expected to ship to the public next year. S-AIT upgrades Sony's AIT technology, which is currently in its third generation. The new format offers 500GB native or 1.3TB compressed storage with transfer speeds as fast as 78Mbps. The company has already developed a road map for S-AIT that will include support for 4TB-per-cartridge drives.

AIT technology currently competes with Digital Data Storage (DSSDDS) backup technology. S-AIT will help AIT technology compete with Linear Tape-Open (LTO) (400GB compressed), Super DLTtape (320GB compressed), and VXA-2 (160GB compressed) technologies. Companies supporting the current AIT format include ADIC, Cybernetics, Hewlett-Packard (HP), Matsushita Media Group, Overland Storage, Qualstar, Spectra Logic, VERITAS Software, and Sony Electronics.
