Dynamic duo Dan Holme and Michael Noel are teaming up to save EMEA readers from SharePoint's perils and pitfalls with a new web conference in October.

Their online "SharePoint: From Chaos to Success" event for Europe, the Middle East and Africa will take place on Thursday, October 15 starting at 11am Central European Time. Attendance is free. Sponsors include AvePoint , Metalogix and Mimosa Systems.

Virtual conference-goers will learn how to control SharePoint farms, apps and site collections. They'll find out how to implement and support SharePoint governance from a technical perspective. The two experts will also seek to answer the question of when and why it makes sense to use either Active Directory or SharePoint groups. Plus they will cover search page customisation and web parts as well as how to use search reporting.

SharePoint guru and MVP Dan Holme's name will be familiar to regular readers of this newsletter. He is a contributing editor to Windows IT Pro magazine and his articles feature here on an almost monthly basis (you can read his latest article, "Six SharePoint potholes", below). He is also a popular speaker at our in-person conferences in the UK and beyond. San Francisco-based Michael Noel's credentials are no less robust as the author of best-selling industry books SharePoint 2007 Unleashed, Windows Server 2008 Unleashed and SharePoint 2003 Unleashed.

The first session of the day will get to grips SharePoint governance. The timing couldn't be better as many IT departments experience "SharePoint sprawl" in the form of a proliferation of team sites without their knowledge or consent. The seminar will look at how IT pros tackle the harder sides of governance: "selling" the importance of governance to their organisation, ensuring that they've "covered their bases" and aligning their SharePoint design with their governance model.

The second SharePoint: From Chaos to Success presentation will demystify SharePoint security by dissecting its deep hierarchy of securable objects, granular permissions and policies as well as its fairly clunky user and group management interfaces. As well as answering the Active Directory/SharePoint group question, there will be a look at options for new permission levels and settings that address common business requirements.

"Building the Perfect SharePoint Farm: A Walkthrough of Best Practices from the Field", will be the online conference's closing session. SharePoint 2007 has proven to be remarkably easy to get running out of the box. On the flipside, however, some of its advanced configuration options are notoriously difficult to set up and configure and a great deal of confusion exists regarding SharePoint best-practice design, deployment, disaster recovery and maintenance. This session will cover infrastructure and design best-practices and look at a broad range of other critical but often overlooked items.

SharePoint: From Chaos to Success will run from 11am to 4pm Central European Time (10am to 3pm GMT) on Thursday, October 15. Visitors will be able to ask questions in real time and interact with peers. For free registration, further lowdown and the day's full agenda, see the SharePoint: From Chaos to Success website.
