As you type and when you open an existing presentation, PowerPoint examines content and will mark text that may be misspelled with a red wavy underline.
Important notes about these indicators:
- The markings do not print. So you can, if you choose, ignore them.
- To find out why a word or phrase is marked, right-click it. The shortcut menu will provide options for you to correct a potential error or leverage a smart tag feature.
- Please, if a word is marked as misspelled and you know it is correctly spelled, add it to your dictionary! Right-click the word and choose Add to Dictionary.
- The markings can interfere with your work. For example, if you are trying to format text, but that text is marked with a wavy underline as a potential error, the right-click menu will display commands related to correcting the potential error. You will not be able to access the normal shortcut menu until after you make a selection regarding the potential error. So maybe you can't ignore them all the time.
- The markings will reappear. If you choose to Ignore a marked error, the next time you open the document, PowerPoint will again scan the document, identify the potential error, and mark it accordingly.
- The markings will reappear (again). If you add a word to your custom dictionary, the red wavy underline will disappear. When another user opens the document, their dictionary may not contain that word and so the word will be marked again.
To perform a manual spelling check:
- Choose Tools → Spelling.
- The check will only look at items that are still flagged with a red-wavy underline. So if you have been staying on top of these indicators as they appeared in your document, your manual spelling check will be a very short process.
