A: Microsoft Surface is the new slate device or tablet created and distributed by Microsoft. It will be available in two versions, one running Windows RT on an ARM platform (nVidia Tegra 3+) and one running Windows 8 Professional on an Intel Ivy Bridge Core i5 based device.
Both devices will feature 10.6 inch screens with the Windows RT-based Surface being thinner and lighter than the Windows 8 Professional-based Surface, but not by a huge amount. Surface features a magnetically attaching keyboard cover, in addition to two USB 3.0 ports on the Pro versions and two USB 2.0 ports on the RT model.
Full specifications can be found in this PDF Microsoft created about Surface. Additionally, here's the link to the main Surface web page. And Paul Thurrott has written about the release date of the Surface.
Availability for the RT version is surface is expected at general availability of Windows 8 while the Windows 8 Pro version is expected 90 days after Windows 8 GA. Obviously Microsoft Surface is just one of the options available to buyers in addition to a huge number of Windows 8 and Windows RT based devices from Microsoft hardware partners giving buyers a huge range of choice to best suit their needs.
