By the end of the year, gaming startup Infinium Labs will launch Phantom, a new video game system that will take on the Sony PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Xbox. The system, which will rely on broadband Internet connections for content, will be available for free to customers who sign up for the company's content-delivery service, which will start at $30 per month. The system will be powered by an AMD Athlon 2500+ processor, NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700 Ultra graphics card with 128MB of graphic memory, and a 40GB hard disk. What's unique about the system is that it will have no way for media—such as CDs, DVDs, or memory cards—to be connected. All games and content will be delivered through the Internet. The Phantom system will run Windows XP Embedded and is expected to be able to run most PC games in a console environment
