Ever wonder how the intrusion detection and prevention system, Snort, got started and where it might be going in the future? Snort creator Martin Roesch tells you all about it in an 18-minute interview.
Some interesting anecdotes are included. For example, did you know Snort was written back in November 1998 over one weekend, and that first rendition amounted to about 1200 lines of code? Roesch considered it to be "a little software toy" that he wanted to "play around with." The first version was only a packet sniffer and had no real IDS/IPS capabilities.
Interesting how a tiny idea can blossom into a huge and successful project.
