Because all Exchange Server computers within a site use the same service account password, you must synchronize the password change among those machines. Otherwise, you might experience problems such as failed deliveries, stalled directory replication, or a complete cessation of the service (which requires a full restore of all systems from your last backup).

Fortunately, Microsoft provides the Exchange Administrator utility to change the service account password. Accessing the utility is straightforward:

  1. For the site's Configuration container, select File, Properties.
  2. Select the Service Account Password tab.
  3. Change the password.
  4. Click Apply, and then OK.

Exchange Administrator records any errors in the event log. You must perform this procedure on each site where you need to change the password.
