It was a sad sight to see, but at TechEd 2013 North America, a multitude of vendors exhibiting in the TechExpo thought they had finally chosen the golden goose of giveaways: a Microsoft Surface. Everyone would want one, right? The thought was that a Microsoft Surface would drive the crowds to the booth and generate a ton of leads. At the end of any Microsoft technology event week, you normally expect to see crowds gather around the booths with the most popular giveaways. Choosing just the right giveaway takes a lot of deliberation and the right choice makes a company proud and successful. Providing the best show giveaway has actually made some people's careers.

Well, Microsoft derailed those plans by offering crazy-Eddie prices on Surface RTs and Surface Pros in the on-premise Microsoft store. By the time TechEd North America concluded there were no crowds huddled around the booths who were offering Surfaces as giveaways.
