June 30, 2005 (Loveland, Colorado) - The group publisher of Penton Media's (OTCBB:PTON) Windows IT Pro Group, Kim Paulsen, announced the 2005 IT Industry Trends Study indicates an upswing in business technology spending over the next 12 months. Fifty-three percent of companies surveyed said they plan to increase their IT spending, up 7 points from last year where 46% said they would increase their spending.

"We have been conducting this survey for the past four years, and each year the percentage of companies planning to increase their IT spending goes up," Paulsen said. "This trend is promising as more companies have money to spend to improve their business and adopt new technologies." New technologies and hardware/software obsolescence were sited by 59% as the catalyst for the planned increase in spending, while 19% said improved company profitability would account for the spending increase. Ninety-four percent plan to upgrade Windows technology in the next two years.

Improving security was the highest IT priority, an issue that moved up from the number two position last year. IT directors, IT managers, and system and network administrators were named most often as those responsible for making expenditure decisions, establishing IT budgets, and determining which brands to buy.

The survey was conducted in May 2005 with an accuracy rating of plus or minus 3.9% and a confidence level of 95%. The respondents included representatives from all Windows IT Pro media areas (print, email, web and print newsletters). The study results show that respondents work at organizations with an average of 4,898 employees and have an average of 14 years technical experience.

Paulsen announced the survey results at the TechEd conference in Orlando, Florida, at an event hosted by Windows IT Pro for its top advertisers and sponsors. The Windows IT Pro Group conducts the IT Industry Trends research each year to determine IT buying plans and formulate spending expectations for the IT market.
