Preventing the Autoforwarding of Messages to an Internet Account

In the February 2001 The Exchange Server Troubleshooter column, Paul Robichaux said he didn't know how to keep users from autoforwarding their messages to an Internet account. In fact, you can prevent this behavior in both Exchange 2000 Server and Exchange Server 5.5. All prudent Exchange administrators should take one of the following courses of action.

In Exchange 5.5, go to the Internet Mail Service connector, then select the Internet Mail tab. Click Advanced Options, then select the Disable automatic replies to the Internet check box. This configuration disables automatic forwarding and prevents looping. Stop and restart the Internet Mail Service (IMS) to make this change take effect.

Exchange 2000 provides a UI for automatic forwarding and completely separates the automatic replies from automatic forwarding so that you can enable or disable each function independently. The Microsoft article "XCON: Separation of Automatic Replies from Automatic Forwarding" (http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q247/1/23.asp) outlines these steps to enable or disable the AutoForward and AutoReply features in Exchange 2000:

  1. Start Exchange System Manager (ESM).
  2. In the left pane, click Global Settings.
  3. In the right pane, double-click Internet Message Format to populate the right pane with the various defined domains.
  4. Right-click the object that represents the domain, then click Properties.
  5. Select the Advanced tab on the Properties dialog box.
  6. In the Allowed Types section, clear the Automatic forward check box to disable the AutoForward feature.
  7. In the Allowed Types section of the Advanced tab, clear the Automatic replies check box to disable the AutoReply feature.
