Mobile devices are expensive, but what if you were paying twice as much as you need to for your company voice and data plans? Mobile expense management company Xigo found the following results in a survey of its customers:
- 31% of voice billable minutes were unused for Xigo Enterprise clients. For the average voice plan, which includes 513 minutes on a monthly per-line basis, only 303 minutes are used. With a $50 plan, that’s just over $15.
- The company's clients are only using 13% of their data plan cap (when they have a cap) on average. The average data cap is 2GB. With some adjustments and greater use of Wi-Fi, most employees could operate perfectly well within 50% of their data cap. A 2GB plan ($40/month on average) could become a 1GB plan ($20/month on average).
- Data/AirCards represent the fastest-growing category by mobile device type. However, most AirCard expenses are paid automatically by organizations without any regulation. In one client's case, the company had an employee who was using the AirCard to download movies and racking up an average of $10,000/month that went unnoticed.
The takeaway from these examples is that most companies don't have a suitable mobile expense management solution in place. That's because these solutions are very cumbersome, often take months to implement, require you to give a lot of sensitive information to a vendor, and are also very expensive. As a result, mobile and telecom expense management products are generally only used by large-scale enterprises. David Snow, chief marketing officer of Xigo, confirms that mobile expense management is largely unused in the small to medium-sized business (SMB) market and even among some enterprises. "The Fortune 500 is pretty sharp on both sides of the equation–they understand the expense and the operational management issues for mobility pretty well. It's the exception that has nothing on either side. But, for the vast majority of the market, especially for the SMB market, MDM is just recently cropping up as an exposure, not just from a security perspective but really a new definition of network edge that wasn't well planned from the beginning. And on the expense side, it is in my mind, very rich territory," said Snow. "The amount of money that organizations are wasting is huge, with both corporate-liable devices and the 'bring your own devices' that they subsidize with reimbursements and stipend plans. Once you're in any of those three situations, there's enough money in play and a tendency to overprovision or overspend—once you know that a company will reimburse you, the very first thing you're going to do is make sure you get that unlimited plan."
