Running Time: 202 minutes
This online training course is targeted at the IT professional who is interested in learning how to manage Active Directory with Windows PowerShell. If you want to know how to manage common Active Directory tasks such as creating user accounts and finding obsolete computers with greater efficiency and you have some basic PowerShell experience, this course is for you.
You will learn how to use the Microsoft Active Directory module and cmdlets from a Windows 8.1 admin desktop, although much of the content will also apply to a Windows 7 desktop running PowerShell 3.0 or later. By the end of the day, you will have a solid foundation that you can apply immediately to managing AD with PowerShell.
Session 1: Managing Active Directory Domains and Forests
In this session we will look at the basics of the Microsoft Active Directory module and its requirements. We’ll explore how to find, use and modify domains, forests, organizational units, and domain controllers.
After this session, at a minimum, you will know how to:
- Identify FSMO role holders
- Identify Global Catalog servers
- Document your domain and forest functional levels
- Identify all domain controllers
Session 2: Managing AD Users and Groups
Managing AD user accounts is probably the most common task for IT pros. The beauty of PowerShell is that if you can do something for one user account you can do it for 10, 100, or 1000. In this session, you will learn how to use the user and group cmdlets and accomplish common tasks, which previously took hours to complete, in minutes.
This session will teach you how to:
- Import a CSV file with new user accounts
- Find users with non-expiring passwords
- Find obsolete user accounts
- Add and remove members from a group
- Find empty groups
Session 3: Managing AD Tips, Tricks, and Scripts
The possibilities for managing AD with PowerShell are endless; you can do everything from using a template user account to tracing attribute replication. You will leave this session with examples and suggestions on how to best use the Active Directory cmdlets and tips, tricks, and scripts to troubleshoot problems in AD with PowerShell.
By the end of this session you will know how to:
- Find obsolete computer accounts
- Move AD objects
- Create AD reports
