The Route to SharePoint 2010

By now you know that to upgrade to SharePoint Foundation 2010 or SharePoint Server 2010, you must first be running Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) 3.0 SP2 or Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007 SP2. If you’ve been ambling along just fine running a prior version but the powers-that-be want SharePoint 2010, you’re in for some intensive upgrading and migrating.

Why? Because you can’t go straight to SharePoint 2010—you have to make the leap from one of the two versions above. Which means you need to upgrade from wherever you are to WSS 3.0 SP2 or MOSS 2007 SP2 BEFORE you make the leap into hyper-warp-speed-overdrive-outer-space to SharePoint 2010.

Fear not, there is a well-mapped route, courtesy of Microsoft, starting with a helpful collection of links from the Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog.

Plus, we’re hearing that third parties are going to ramp up and help you get there as well. We’ll keep you posted.

In the meantime, we've got some great SharePoint 2010 articles coming in late February from Michael Noel and Dan Holme that will show you why you'd want to go through the hassle of upgrading and migrating to SharePoint 2010.
