Connections 2008: What If You Ran Microsoft?
- Posted by: Editors
There's not a person in the IT industry who hasn't daydreamed about what it might be like to sit in the CEO's chair at Microsoft. (Except Steve Ballmer, of course. He's already sitting there.) So we decided to ask some Connections 2008 attendees what they would do in the same situation as part of our "If I Ran Microsoft..." video contest. Here are a few of the more interesting suggestions taken from the WinConnections show floor: "If I ran Microsoft, I'd change the help. Right now I don't find it very helpful! We need more examples of code." -- Jim... READ THE ENTIRE POST HERE.

VMworld 2008: VMware ESX 4.0 Coming Soon?
- Posted by: Jeff James
Alessandro Perilli over at Virtualization.info authored an interesting blog post before the start of VMworld 2008, including some speculation on his part that the next-generation of VMware's ESX hypervisor -- ESX 4.0 -- may possibly be announced at the show. VMware did reveal some information about new ESX features during VMware CTO Dr. Steve Herrod's keynote on Wednesday morning, including some of the features that Perilli speculated would be in the next revision of ESX. Here's a partial excerpt from ... READ THE ENTIRE POST HERE. MAKE A COMMENT

Tech Ed 2008--Microsoft IT Eats Its Own Dogfood
- Posted by: Sheila Molnar
Had a great conversation at Tech Ed with Barry Briggs, the Director of IT at Microsoft, about a classic Microsoft topic—eating your own dogfood. Basically, Briggs’s internal IT group runs prerelease versions of Microsoft products and files bug reports and provides other feedback. Microsoft has a history of putting prerelease software into production use at the company to work through tough problems at the enterprise level. Briggs says that the politically correct way to describe this internal testing is “the first and best” program. But everyone just calls it “eating your own dogfood” or... READ THE ENTIRE POST HERE. Social War Dialing - The New Identity Theft Menace
- Posted by: Tony Howlett
Just when you thought that the hackers had thought of everything.  A new IT Theft method that is being directed at the nation’s banks is called Social War Dialing also known as “Vishing”.   Like its cousin Phishing, this con attempts to talk unsuspecting victims out of their account numbers, passwords, etc.  However instead of using email or the computer which many of us have been trained to not trust, they use the good ole telephone.  The way that this... Troubleshooting a Slow-Running Windows Server 2008
- Posted by: Alan Sugano
We are in the middle of a major upgrade project for a new client. The client has two VMware ESX host servers running a variety of virtual server guests, including two domain controllers (DCs), File Server, Exchange Server 2007, SQL Server 2005, Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007 and Terminal Server.   All servers are running Windows Server 2008 as the base OS with a mix of x86 and x64.  All the servers were prepped for an initial Exchange cut over last Friday.  Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, we completed training on Exchange and SharePoint for the client and the servers ran flawlessly. ... Does Outlook 2010 Need Fixing?
- Posted by: B. K. Winstead
How is it that Microsoft manages to land itself in the middle of so many controversies? Or perhaps a better question is, why is it that so many people get so worked up about what Microsoft does? The latest mini-firestorm I've been following is the brouhaha over the Office team's announcement that Microsoft Office Outlook 2010 will use Word 2010 for its HTML authoring and rendering engine. This situation goes back to Outlook 2007, which first used Word 2007 for HTML rendering. Last week, the Email Standards Project (ESP) launched a campaign on Twitter to give Microsoft feedback about this decision; you can find information... READ THE ENTIRE POST HERE.

Flip Your Script
- Posted by: Christan Humphries
There’s nothing I like better than a “flipped script.” I’m good—actually great—at figuring out what is going to happen. I can read the clues in social situations, usually figure out what our organization’s corporate office will do next, and even deduce the ending of most any movie. So when someone comes along and surprises me, I have all that much more respect for them. And in a tough job market where you have to show that not only can you do the tasks you’re hired for but also anything else the company throws at you, it helps to have some skill surprises up your sleeve. Make sure your... READ THE ENTIRE POST HERE. MAKE A COMMENT

Wireshark 1.2.0 Sports Lots of New Features
- Posted by: Mark Joseph Edwards
Wireshark 1.2.0 is out. The new version of this popular packet sniffer includes many new features, including GeoIP integration, a 64-bit Windows installer, and more. One of the biggest additions is support for numerous new protocols. The list of new protocols is too extensive to list here, so suffice it to say there are a few dozen more than in previous versions. Other new features include support for Pcap-ng (which is supposed to be the next-generation capture file format) and IP packet comparison capabilities. And of course there are a load of bug fixes. Check out the details at the ... READ THE ENTIRE POST HERE. MAKE A COMMENT

Blizzard will not support LAN play in StarCraft 2
- Posted by: Orin Thomas
In one of the most serious WTF moments I’ve ever had as a gamer, Blizzard today announced that StarCraft 2 will not support direct LAN play. http://au.gamespot.com/news/6212765.html Not only will you need to buy 3 (yes 3) separate products to get the whole StarCraft 2 experience (want to play Zerg, buy the Zerg product, want to play Protoss, sorry you need to buy the Protoss edition), you won’t be able to set up a direct LAN connection. In those few spare moments I have in life, I play RTS games with my brother in law. We set up an ad-hoc wireless network... READ THE ENTIRE POST HERE. MAKE A COMMENT

Self Paced or Instructor Led Training
- Posted by: Orin Thomas
There are two basic ways of studying for certification. You do it all yourself or you go to a class. Before I go any further I’ll point out that I write Self Paced Training Kits for Microsoft, so there is a bit of an incentive for me to push one method over the other. On the other hand, I’ve also run instructor led courses. Anyway, now that that is out there, on with the post… Each type of study suits a particular person. If you simply can never find the time to study out of hours, or you need someone to give you a bit of a push when it comes to motivation, going to a class can be your best option. Some people simply need the routine... READ THE ENTIRE POST HERE.

Do You Need a Shrink?
- Posted by: Curt Spanburgh
Stress is mounting for IT professionals, and for some fear is the dominant emotion of the day. Some realize the need for professional help. Let's look at a typical IT worker, Dave, who is experiencing "high anxiety."The setting: A quiet therapist office at the Windows IT Pro building with Dave on his first visit to Dr. Avatar.Doctor: So you're an IT administrator. Why don't you just fix it?Dave:  Because I'm afraid to touch it.Doctor: Hmm…  Odd phobia for an IT admin.Dave: No, I mean touch the SQL Server database and the application. I don't know... Microsoft Contemplating a Purchase of RIM?

Rumors surfaced this past Friday that Microsoft is contemplating a purchase of BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion (RIM). Windows Workstation 2008: Step 2
- Posted by: Michael Otey
In my last blog  entry I headed down the path of building a Windows Workstation 2008 by starting with Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition and configuring it for desktop use. Last week I added the Aero interface. This week I’ll continue configuring the Windows Workstation by tuning the system and adding audio. Along the way I’ll show you the steps I followed and share some of my experiences. The first issue I ran into was that the system would not activate. I didn’t notice this until after the Aero interface was installed. Activation is always a hassle but this time it inexplicably was calling out a DNS... READ THE ENTIRE POST HERE. MAKE A COMMENT
