The winner of this year’s Best of Tech·Ed award in the Business Intelligence category is OfficeWriter from SoftArtisans. Office and Excel are by far the most popular BI client applications. OfficeWriter can connect to SQL Server, Analysis Services, and other databases and deliver fully functional Microsoft Excel and Word documents over the web. One really cool feature of OfficeWriter is its ability to preserve all of the original document functionality like macros, pivot tables, and VBA.
Database Administration
In the Database Administration category the winner of this year’s Best of Tech·Ed award goes to SQL diagnostic manager. SQL diagnostic manager provides is the ability to monitor SQL Server performance as well as diagnose and analyze performance problems. One outstanding feature of SQL diagnostic manager is its ability to record comprehensive performance history enabling trending and analysis of previous system problems.
Hardware, Networking, and Storage
The Strangeloop WS1000 is a web service accelerator appliance. Strangeloop’s WS1000 is able to increase the performance of web services by an order of magnitude. Strangeloop’s WS1000’s advanced caching technologies enable plug-and-play performance optimization without requiring any changes to the web services application code.
Messaging
Our judges liked Azaleos OneServer Virtual Edition, with features ranging from its polished interface to its wealth of management and analysis options. If you’re looking to virtualize your Exchange environment, Azaleos OneServer Virtual Edition is a good place to start.
Productivity and Collaboration
Giving users access to company information on the road is essential, and Colligo Contributor Pro allows users to access and edit SharePoint content both online and offline. A handy Colligo add-in for Outlook also makes publishing SharePoint content as easy as dragging and dropping an email from one screen location to another. For all these reasons—and more—Colligo Contributor Pro is our winner in the Productivity and Collaboration category.
Security
The winner of the Best of Tech·ED 2008 award in the security category is Trend Micro’s ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange. ScanMail for Microsoft Exchange provides comprehensive e-mail security including anti-virus, anti-spyware and 0 day virus protection. In addition, it has the ability to stop spam and phishing threats and block inappropriate web content.
SharePoint
The winner in this category is the AvePoint DocAve Software Platform. SharePoint use is exploding, and the DocAve Software Platform provides an integrated environment for SharePoint management, disaster recovery, and real-time backup. A free discovery tool helps you find SharePoint installations in your enterprise , and a consistent user interface make managing all of these features a snap.
Systems Management and Operations
In the Systems Management and Operations category, the winner is Athena by Odyssey Software. Athena is a management solution for Windows-based mobile devices. The product seamlessly integrates into the System Center management interface to provide remote tools, extended asset reporting, and provisioning for mobile devices in the enterprise.
Virtualization
VThe winner of the virtualization product category is VMware Infrastructure 3. Virtualization is taking the IT world by storm, and VMware has been driving that change more than anyone. Vendors like Citrix and Microsoft are hoping to chip away at that market-leading position, but VMware is currently in the drivers’ seat.
