5292 » 'The system is not fully installed' after running Sysprep on Windows 2000 or Windows XP? 10-May-02

When you restart your Windows 2000 or Windows XP computer, after running the System Preparation tool (Sysprep), you receive:

Windows Message:
The system is not fully installed.
Please run setup again.

The registry entry that Sysprep uses to mark its' progress is incorrectly set.

To resolve this problem, you will need to install a parallel copy of Windows 2000 or Windows XP, in a different partition, and use it to edit the original registry:

01. Install a parallel copy of Windows 2000 or Windows XP in a different partition.

02. Boot the parallel install.

03. Use the Registry Editor, Regedt32 for Windows 2000 or Regedit for Windows XP.

04. Select (highlight) the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE hive.

05. On the Registry or File menu, press Load Hive.

06. Navigate to the \System32\Config folder of the original installs Windows folder.

07. Open the System file.

08. Type AAAA when prompted to name the key and press OK.

09. Navigate to AAAA\Setup.

10. Double-click the SystemSetupInProgress Value Name, a REG_DWORD data type, and set the data value to 0.

11. Press OK.

12. Select the AAAA key.

13. On the Registry or File menu, press Unload Hive.

14. Exit the Registry Editor.

15. Use Control Panel / System / Advanced / Startup and Recovery [Settings] to make the Default operating system your original install. You can also alter the time to display the list of operating systems.

16. Press OK and OK.

17. Shutdown and restart your original operating system.
