My role as a device driver developer and student of Windows NT internals often requires me to go beyond where standard Win32 debuggers, such as Microsoft Visual C++ (VC++), can go. For stepping through NT's kernel, or tracing the execution flow from user space into the kernel, you need a kernel-mode debugger. Microsoft provides WinDbg as part of its Windows NT Software Development and Device Driver Development kits, so this product is essentially free when you buy a Microsoft Developer Network subscription. However, WinDbg has several limitations. The only alternative debugger on the market is Compuware NuMega's SoftICE for NT, and although it has a high price tag, it's a necessity for a serious kernel-mode programmer.

To understand why SoftICE is attractive, you must first understand what you get with WinDbg. It's a two-computer debugging solution, where the command GUI runs on a computer that you connect to the one you are debugging (the target) via a standard NULL-modem serial cable. The WinDbg GUI interprets commands you enter for setting breakpoints in device drivers or the NT kernel, for freezing and unfreezing the target, and for stepping through instructions. One of WinDbg's features is that the GUI is a standard Windows application with subwindows for displaying disassembly, source code, a call stack, local variables, and processor registers. Some of the drawbacks to relying on WinDbg include the following: It has numerous quirks and bugs, and Microsoft doesn't support it; it has poor support for stepping through code not related to a device driver under development; it can't follow a transition from user mode to kernel mode or vice versa; and it transmits large amounts of data across a serial line, which is slow.

SoftICE runs on the computer that you are debugging, which makes it extremely responsive when scanning memory or capturing large amounts of debug output, and it doesn't suffer some of WinDbg's limitations. When you break into SoftICE— either when you hit a breakpoint during program execution or when you enter a hot key—it freezes the machine, stores away the video display, and pops up its own character-oriented windows. The interface is essentially the same as WinDbg's and shares many of the same commands, but it's less flexible and less attractive. Nevertheless, the ability to set breakpoints in the kernel or standard device drivers and then step up into a standard program such as NT Explorer makes SoftICE a powerful tool for understanding how NT works. This comprehension is especially desirable in the world of device driver programming, where many APIs are poorly documented. In addition, SoftICE has intrinsic knowledge of several key NT data structures that WinDbg doesn't, which simplifies navigating past the boundaries of your device driver.

SoftICE's utility doesn't stop at kernel-mode programming—it's also a powerful Win32 debugger. Although it's difficult to debug interapplication interactions, or interactions between an application and the OS, using Visual Studio's debugger, SoftICE makes this task relatively easy. Again, you can seamlessly follow execution from your Win32 application into system DLLs and then into the kernel and back.

SoftICE's relatively high price tag, especially when you compare it to the cost of WinDbg (free), might make it a hard purchase to justify. In the world of device driver development, however, this tool is essential, even if your primary debugger will continue to be WinDbg. You can always pull out SoftICE to help you in situations where WinDbg isn't up to the task. Perhaps the most compelling reason to move to this product is that Compuware NuMega fully supports it. When you're debugging complex device driver code, the most annoying bugs are those in the tools you are using; a product that provides bug fixes in a timely manner is worth its weight in debugged lines of code. SoftICE will continue to be the coauthor of my NT Internals column, helping me to understand NT beyond its documentation.

Happy New Year I have recently downloaded softice-4.04 for win-2000 and NT. i have got S3 pro savage DDR dispaly adapter. it seems that softice iss not compatible with it. because the softice screen disappears just fter starting. Here are the instructions: Go to this Russian site and download softice 4.05 for XP and there you can download the drivers too http://www.cracklab.ru/download/list.php?l=2 and below i will give you the instructions about the problems you may have!

Posts: 126 The following is a list of things that make SoftICE video work on different configurations of video card and SotICE versions. Reboot and try again after each step. 1) The correct settings for SoftICE Video (in the SoftICE Display Adapter Setup) are Standard Vga with Universal Video Driver box checked. Even if your card was detected. At minimum you should run the display adapter a second time to verify that the correct data was written during testing. 2) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Siwvid make sure that the entry for start value is set to 0. 3) Some cards do not support the direct draw system. The correct settings for these in SoftICE Video (in the SoftICE Display Adapter Setup) are Standard Vga with Universal Video Driver box NOT checked. 4) Try checking the value the video memory in Symbol Loader | Edit | SoftICE Initialization Settings | Video Memory It needs to be set to a value that will hold your the contents of your screen. To determine this multiply the pixel width * pixel height * pixel depth. Pixel depth is: 256 color = 1. High color (16 bit = 2, True color 24 or 32 bit = 4). Example: 1024 X 768 @ 32 bit = 3145 KB. 5) Make sure the value in \REGISTRY\Machine\System\ControlSet001\Services\\Device0\Installed DisplayDriver matches the one in \REGISTRY\Machine\System\ControlSet\Services\NTice\InstalledDisplayDriver. 6) Using regedit go to \REGISTRY\Machine\System\ControlSet\Services\NTice and add the following items. DWORD DoInt2dPatch 1 DWORD Int2dLocation 0 Reboot TWICE and try again. 7) Using regedit go to \REGISTRY\Machine\System\ControlSet\Services\NTice and add the following item. Then try the values specified below and reboot. DWORD IsInt2dRVA 1 8) Try a value of 0xe422d in the Int2dLocation location (Normally works on XP SP0). 9) Try a value of 0x88920 in the Int2dLocation location (Normally works on XP SP1). 10) Try a value of 0xbe67c in the Int2dLocation location (Normally works on Win 2K SP3). 11) For W2k sp4, remove the IsInt2dRVA value altogether and change the Int2dLocation value to 0x804c2b95. 12) For W2k server sp4, remove the IsInt2dRVA value altogether and change the Int2dLocation value to 0x804cE030. 13) Do the Int2dLocation location patch manually. Remove value for IsInt2dRVA if it exists. Set value for DoInt2dPatch to 1. Set value for Int2dLocation to 0. Go to start->programs->driverStudio->Debug->Symbol Retriever. Use add to add ntoskrnl. Check load symbols into softice. Get symbols. Open a command prompt and hit alt-enter. Then hit ctrl-d. You should be in softice. Once in softice type "s MmLoadSystemImage L d88 85,c0,0f,84" You should see a matched pattern at..... You need the address from that matching. For example 8059064D. Write that down. Open regedit and got to \REGISTRY\Machine\System\ControlSet\Services\NTice Set value for Int2dLocation to that matched address. If none of these items work please send the following information: 1) The export reg file for the \REGISTRY\Machine\System\ControlSet\Services\NTice 2) The export reg file for the \REGISTRY\Machine\System\ControlSet\Services\SiwVid 3) run msinfo32.exe and send the resulting nfo file. 4) Send a copy of WINICE.DAT under winnt\system32\drivers 5) Add "/bootlog /SOS" options in \BOOT.INI, reboot, send winnt\NTBTLOG.TXT to us. 6) Set SoftICE to start at boot mode, reboot. Run symbol loader immediately after Windows is up. Go to file ->save softice history and send that.

Hi Guys, is there anyone who can explain why Softice under xp can't load executables? I mean that when I try to load an .exe it does not stop at the start of the program but just executes it. Is it a matter of settings I am missing? Thanks

hi, I just got installed SoftICE 4.05nt on a WinXP build 2600. I have installed the nticexp27 patch that replaces the drivers on %systemroot%\system32\drivers. But when i ran NET START NTICE, i got the result: "Some device linked to the system is not working properly". I think any response will be useful not only for me but for everybody who gets a similar error message. Additionally, understanding why this happens should be interesting in the purpose of knowing how softice interacts with XP. So, any help is welcome. moroccho_fnp@hotmail.com. -Niggro-

Tried the patch and couldn't find the "system32" file, but found where one of the original files to replace was, but couldn't find the original "ntice" file. So, where does that go? Uh, ideas? (PS I have v4.05 and searched the whole computer for these files and folders).

/\Oh, just kidding on not finding system32/I did exactly everything the patch said to do, but after much crashing I found the "patched" ntice file was to blame. What's going on here, any ideas?

hi, i can't download the symbols with symbol retriever. i added the ntoskrnl.exe, hal.dll and all those files, and then clicked "get symbols". Where it said pending next to the files now say "error - download" and no symbols were downloaded... the program is told to get the symbols from the default msdl.microsoft..../symbols server, but apparently it doesn't work! i would REALLY appreciate all help from you guys, cuz i seriously need softice to work! //voggorb

I have SoftIce 4.05 running on win XP does anyone have a clue how to actualy use it? I downloaded the Symbols off microsoft.com, and im looking to set a break point at _vbaStrCmp. for a VB5 application. after typing BPX _VbaStrCmp and then BL it comes up as _vbaStrCmp. But shouldnt it be comming up as msvbvm50!__vbastrcmp? im asking this becasause Softice isnt breaking at the point where I assuming it should be.

i have a problem. This isn't really related to softice but i need some really smart computer dude. whenever i try to run the command prompt or try to install certain games off of a disk i get the error that says this "C:\Windows\System32\autoexec.nt. The system file is not suitable for running MS-Dos and Microsoft Windows application."and no matter what i do i cant get anything to work. I don't know what it means when is says "not suitable". is there a way to fix this? any help would be aprreciated.
