Microsoft to Announce Longhorn Name: Windows Vista

As first reported in the Tablet PC Buzz forums, Microsoft will announce on Friday morning that Longhorn will be officially named as Windows Vista. I first published information about this new name on my Internet Nexus blog. Later in the day, Activewin corroborated the story, noting that a Windows executive had mistakenly referred to the name during "a sales conference in Atlanta." Steven Bink (of Bink.nu) and some folks from Neowin.net also discovered that Microsoft had acquired the windowsvista.us domain name.

I'll be talking with Microsoft about this Friday morning, so I should have more information in time for newsletter version of Short Takes. But the official press release about the new naming will be available Friday morning at 9:00 am, I was told today.

Vista: Noun
1 - A view, especially a splendid view from a high position.
2 - A possible future action or event that you can imagine.

UPDATE: Microsoft has declined to comment on the "speculative stories" on the Internet. We'll see what Friday brings.

this was the name for a visual stats program.. http://www.stat.umn.edu/users/stat-lisp-news/msg00095.html otherwise.. I think of the Vista Cruiser from the 70s show..

Yawn! Its somewhere over the Vista. We will get there soon 2005, 2006, or 2007.

Anonymous User -July 21, 2005

Holy crap. Better sell that Microsoft stock before morning.

RyWalters -July 21, 2005

Pretty good name

Anonymous User -July 21, 2005

The first time I saw the name I really don't like it, but after some minutes the name was getting better and better.

Anonymous User -July 21, 2005

I would prefer they named it 'Windows 2006' or something, hell, when they named XP, I thought it mean Expansion Pack at first. And Vista, a reference to Aero possibly?

Anonymous User -July 21, 2005

Vista... What the hell kind of name is Vista? Mac OS X Windows Vista Slackware Linux... Man, OSes are getting Wierd *** Names... I mean, look in the past at say Windows 95, or the "System 6" (Mac OS) or DOS... I'll aplaud them for picking an obscure word with a nice meaning though. Welp, might as well start coming up with stupid insults to it... VISTA = Very Inane Systems Technology Architecture Who knows, maybe this could be fun.

Anonymous User -July 21, 2005

It'll grow on you. Besides, after 400 Million on marketing is shoved down your throat, you wont' be able to imagine a time without windows vista

Anonymous User -July 21, 2005

I really wish it would be Win2006. These "cool" names are just stupid. I guess they (marketing) thinks these sound some much more friendly and easy. But how is a grandma supposed to know which one to choose; Me, Vista, XP...? I wish MS would pick a naming scheme and stick to it. We had Office 2000. Then XP. Then 2003. What next? Office Vista, followed by Office 2008 XP? An operating system name without any version number...it's like car maker would name their car only buy some silly name, and not tell you what year model it is...

Anonymous User -July 21, 2005

Vista sounds cheap.

Anonymous User -July 22, 2005

And i stayed up at 11 o-clock on a friday night just to hear this... well how about some real news: "Microsoft just anounced that their new client version of Windows Code Name Longhorn, will now infact have the name of Windows Chicken. They had just anounced that it would be named 'Windows Vista', but then decided against it after some random sugested the name Windows Chicken. Well it looks like I shall be using (windows) chicken tonight." - The Sunday Age

Anonymous User -July 22, 2005

"Vista: Noun 2 - A possible future action or event that you can imagine." i.e. Apple regaining the market share lead with Mac OS X.

Anonymous User -July 22, 2005

I'm sorry. This name is just awful. "Windows Vista?" From a marketing standpoint, it's not catchy or pleasant. This makes the whole Longhorn project feel like even more of a joke. Just my opinion.

Anonymous User -July 22, 2005

"It'll grow on you. Besides, after 400 Million on marketing is shoved down your throat, you wont' be able to imagine a time without windows vista" Windows ME and XP never grew on me. But Vista is embarrassingly bad, much worse than ME and XP. "Hey, guys! I'm using VISTA!" It's hilarious.

vis·ta P Pronunciation Key (vst) n. A distant view or prospect, especially one seen through an opening, as between rows of buildings or trees. LOL..."distant view or prospect" Yeah. Windows Vista: a long distance away, offering the prospect (but not the promise) of a secure system...someday. We can't see the forest for the trees. Sounds about right.

Vast Innovation Starting To Arrive ---- El-Kabong --------- in other words, 5 year old technology?! HAHAHAHAHHA

Anonymous User -July 22, 2005

My dictionary says: "A view into the distance, especially one bounded narrowly on both sides." A very appropriate choice.

Anonymous User -July 22, 2005

I like it.

Anonymous User -July 22, 2005

Yes, I like the name "Windows Vista" too. I like the way it goes with "Windows". Makes me imagine views and places in the mountains - very nice.

Anonymous User -July 22, 2005

Quote: "Windows ME and XP never grew on me" I didn't mind XP too much, but Windows Me sounded terrible. I would hide the fact that I ever used it out of embarrasment over the name. SOunds like the name of a product some teen girl would keep in her purse or something. Not good. In my opinion, it coloured the OS's acceptance. XP was OK. Windows Vista seems to be a good one though. I like how 'Vista' goes with Windows - it complements it. And it seems like a timely name for some reason.

Anonymous User -July 22, 2005

Hey what ever happen to those IBM net Vista?

Anonymous User -July 22, 2005

Sounds like a pretty stupid name, but it will cath on shortly. "Very Intelligent Strange Tyrannical Aliens" is my pesonal thought.

Anonymous User -July 22, 2005

Why must they make it confusing? What was wrong with 95, 98, 2000, and 2003 server? Why couldn't they give numbers to ME and XP? Vista is even worse than the name Longhorn. A nice simple Windows 2007 would have made life simple. Whichever marketing genius thought of this one should, in the eloquent words of Garfield, "be drug out into the street and shot." XP for eXPerience wasn't too bad. Millennium Edition (ME) was kind of like giving it a year name (200 was taken). But Vista? Grrrrrrrrrrr OK, I have vented and feel somewhat better. At least they didn't just pick some animal to name it after.

Anonymous User -July 22, 2005

Anonymous User -July 22, 2005

They should have called it Special Edition X. As any marketing droid can tell you, SE X always sells.

Anonymous User -July 22, 2005

it's just really weird and sad to watch longhorn/vista video demonstrations of resizing icon grid sizes in windows like it's some amazing new innovation Microsoft is giving us when OS X has done it since 2001 hardware acceleration? OS X had it since 2002. lame

Anonymous User -July 22, 2005

What are the advantages for the "average" home user? People like me who only type the odd letter and email, play The Sims 2 and surf the web? I don't keep old documents or emails and so don't need advanced "Finder" software. I don't need a fancy 3D display just to type an email...! I don't have ant sort of network (and never will as like most "average" people the PC gets replaced when it goes caput and then thrown away or a part updated). I don't watch TV, DVDs or listen to music on the PC and never will. All my friends and family (over 100 people) use their PCs this way and so we won't be buying Longhorn. P.S. The name Windows Vista sounds rubbish.

Anonymous User -July 22, 2005

they're just gonna call it vista until that name becomes a laughing stock.. around 2007 we'll hear the next official name.. "Oh ****, only 2 weeks before launch.. we have 2 weeks to make fun of Windows:Revolution 2007"

Anonymous User -July 22, 2005

Windows Vista is horrific sounding. Let's hope it changes again, but this time to something a little bit better. It sounds like Microsoft was trying too hard to come up with a name for the OS or something. A lot of the naming in this new version of Windows has left me dumb-founded. Like the ressemblance of Aero Glass to Quartz Extreme, or how the "My" part in the user folder has been dropped and now the names are identical to mac folders. Documents, Music, Movies, Pictures. Why give the Windows user folders the same names as the OS X user folder names? I don't understand why Microsoft would want to give their users the same themes that are on macs. And what's worse about those folders is that their not similar, they're identically named after OS X. Not only does the naming ressemble OS X in some ways, but has anyone else noticed how similar the Vista icons look to OS X? I don't think I'm going out on a limb here, just look at the similarity of OneCare to the blue bubble in iChat. I also noticed that the OneCare icon has the same reflection as the Windows icon Paul has been using for his Windows updates. That reflection almost seems like a trademark of OS X application icons. Anybody who has used OS X knows the look and feel of OS X, and can easily spot borrowed ideas of the user interface. Even Paul did on his review of build 5048 when describing the Longhorn icons as in his words; "dare I say it, almost OS X-like." Not only does the user experience look like it's going to be similar to OS X in some aspects, but the features of Vista are well known already because they are the features of OS X. It's almost as if the people at Redmond wanted those banners from the WWDC 2004 which stated phrases such as "Introducing Longhorn" to be true or something. I have a feeling that this version of Windows will get a name for being one of the lamer versions. Not because the features will suck... It's more of how the new OS is behind the technology curve. To top things off, OS X 10.5 is scheduled for release along side Vista as well. Can anybody else see Microsoft falling behind not just on ideas, but with putting out a good OS?

DerekTraver -July 22, 2005

V=virtual I=integrated S=systems T=technology A=architecture (it is about virtualization) vista = sight (in italian)

Real journalists typically write most important news at the beginning of the article and less important facts as the article progresses. Notice how Paul typically, at the beginning of his articles, notes how he first reported such and such! HAH!

Anonymous User -July 22, 2005

Sounds fine. After all its the quality of the OS that matters, not the stupid name!

Anonymous User -July 23, 2005

The codename "Longhorn" was better than Vista but I i agree with the one that said : After all its the quality of the OS that matters, not the stupid name!

Anonymous User -July 23, 2005

I like the name "Vista" .. it goes with Windows. And I live in a neighbourhood called "Vista". So it seems familiar to me! Anyway, I like the name and think it is a good one. It's related to Windows, seems general purpose and adds a small spark to the imagination i.e. it makes me think of mountain views .. way better than a number or letter designation.

Vunerable information system, try apple

Anonymous User -July 23, 2005

it's a cover-up to let you think all the faults, crashes and virusses will dissappear, but they won't, the OS is still built upon the old dos-system which makes it more and more vunerable every upgrade. Think different, think Apple!

Anonymous User -July 23, 2005

"but they won't, the OS is still built upon the old dos-system which makes it more and more vunerable every upgrade." If you're talking about 9x, you would be right. NT isn't built on top of DOS, nor does it use DOS as a boot loader.

Anonymous User -July 23, 2005

crashes??, it won;t for almost 4 years XP only crashed on me a handfull of times and it was due to my wd hard disk failing and not with software. If your computer is built with all the compatible parts (like an apple system typically is)it won't crash. Vista is better name for a minivanin my opinionbut since it;s coupled with the word windows it;s ok

Anonymous User -July 23, 2005

The NT source is not much better than an OS built on DOS. All of the security issues and problems associated with Windows XP are attributed to NT. Either way I don't see how one could argue NT is secure, I believe the comments above implicate that Vista will also be built on this same source because it's straight out of XP. And somehow there's going to be 'clarity' in security on the same Windows source code. Haha I believe that is how Redmond is putting it these days.
