Microsoft Ships WSUS

Microsoft shipped Windows Server Update Services  (WSUS) yesterday. The long-awaited upgrade to Software Update Services (SUS) gives small-to-midsized businesses (SMBs) free software-patching functionality. Based on the company's new Microsoft Update backend, WSUS will be joined in July by two related tools--Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) 2.0 and SMS Extended Security Update Inventory Tool.   Like Microsoft Update, WSUS has been years in the making. To fulfill customer requests, the software giant originally planned to ship WSUS (then called SUS 2.0) in early 2004. "We know that your number-one desire is for us to eliminate the need for patches," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said during a keynote address yesterday at the Microsoft TechEd 2005 trade show.

Microsoft Update, the Web-based successor to Windows Update, is now also available. Like Windows Update, Microsoft Update provides patches and updates for Windows products but it also supports other Microsoft products, including Microsoft Office and Microsoft SQL Server. "Customers want us to do whatever we can to minimize the costs associated with updates, and this gives both consumers and IT professionals a single place to look for those updates," Microsoft Corporate Vice President Gordon Mangione said yesterday.

WSUS requires Windows Server 2003 or Windows 2000 Server with Service Pack 4 (SP4). For more information about WSUS and the free download, visit the Microsoft Web site

WSUS? Jesus, who cares! Apple on Intel! This is the biggest death knell for Windows there has ever been.

Anonymous User -June 07, 2005

No kidding, who the hell cares about "WSUS?" I want to know what the Windows kidz think about Intel, the largest chip manufacturer in the world, dumping the sinking ship that is Windows and embracing Apple computers? You guys will all be using iMacs by 2007. LOL. Windows Longwait will still be a dream as we all use OS X 10,5 Leopard, due out in a year. It's a horrible time to be a Windows fanboi.

Anonymous User -June 07, 2005

God, what a horrible week for M$ fanboiz. First, it's revealed that 16% of the world's computers are actually Macs. iPods are 90+% of the market. Nobody cares about VC-1/WMV anymore thanks to Quicktime H.264. And now Intel has openly embraced Apple and will be powering future Macintoshes? Steve Ballmer's response was hilarious, something about "implementing networks" that didn't even make sense. M$ has gone off the deep end...Paul is right, Apple is at the center of the tech industry right now.

"OS X is simply better than Windows. Especially for power users." - Paul Thurrott "Longhorn is a trainwreck." - Paul Thurrott

Anonymous User -June 07, 2005

"THINK INTEL" I know, now that Intel has abandoned the sinking Windows ship and embraced Apple, what are M$ fanboiz going to do? Rattle on about how great the X-Box 360's POWERPC PROCESSOR is? AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....

Anonymous User -June 07, 2005

Ironic how before this all apple fanboys could do was bash MS and x86, G5 is the best blah blah blah. Now you all are Intel lovers overnight? Talk about hanging by Jobs' ****. If the guy told you jumping off a cliff was cool and "different" you'd probably go and do it.

BOOO YAH! Mac users don't have Software Update and we do!!!! Man Mac Luzers can't update their Apple Apps and OS like this... ...can they?

Anonymous User -June 07, 2005

The article says that Microsoft Update is now available. This seems to be wrong. If you check Microsoft.com, you will not find it, only Windows Update and Office Update. Are you sure that Microsoft Update has now come out of beta?

easson -June 07, 2005

Finally - I've been waiting for this software to be released. Not that it matters because apparently we'll all be running macs in a couple of years. I sure hope not, I don't think I could cope with all the 'innocation'.

On http://www.windowsitpro.com/Article/ArticleID/46537/46537.html You wrote: "First, Microsoft will ship Update Rollup 1 (UR1) for Windows 2000--you know, that "thing" that replaces Win2K Service Pack 5 (SP5)--on June 1." It's June 7th so where is UR1?

Anonymous User -June 07, 2005

"First, it's revealed that 16% of the world's computers are actually Macs." You forgot the . 1.6% And falling.

Anonymous User -June 07, 2005

There are more confused people posting responses than are professionals, please cn we stop this Mac *&&&**** and start talking like scientist. Let us cut the mudslinging, leave Microsoft softwares to those who prefer it and let others get a bite of their Apple, or whatever

Design nightmares of the Mac OS X kernel: http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/macosx-10.4.ars/4 "In earlier versions of Mac OS X, the kernel was essentially single-threaded. That is, only one thread could be in the kernel at any given time. Other threads could continue to run, so long as they did not run code that needed to execute inside the kernel." They are working on that huge mistake, but I can't believe, a modern kernel was designed such a poor quality. Kazi

Anonymous User -June 08, 2005

Quote, "dumping the sinking ship that is Windows". Have you fallen off the deep end? Where did Intel say that they are stopping support for Windows? Quote, "First, it's revealed that 16% of the world's computers are actually Macs.". Where is this data coming from, because this goes against EVERYTHING that everyone has been saying for a long time. You Apple fanboys forget that Dell alone smokes Apple sales. While the Mac Intel sales will account for a cool 3-4 million units per year for Intel, this will be nothing compared to the 160 million worldwide shipments for the non Mac offerings from Intel. Then add in AMD.

Anonymous User -June 08, 2005

I figured out where the 16% figure is coming from. It pays to read stuff before you post needless figures. The figure is "An estimated 16% of Mac users are currently on Tiger. Notice the wording that says MAC users, not total computer users. Source: http://www.edn.com/blog/400000040/post/740000874.html

If so many people on this list like Apple, leave Windows IT Pro! The name gives it away...we like PC's. Glad to see that within 24 hours of Apple releasing OSX 10.3, they recalled it. Has Apple fixed the printing bugs...probably have to wait for another update...

Anonymous User -June 08, 2005

I so fondly refer to the wacko that was making all the posts about Mac's as a "Mac Nazzi". Personally, I like Mac's they do serve a purpose, just not in the mass market. So being the dreamer that he is, he will attempt to force his will on the rest of us and we will just ignore the hell out of him.

BOOO YAH! Mac users don't have Software Update and we do!!!! Man Mac Luzers can't update their Apple Apps and OS like this... ...can they? Yeah, they can. There is a Software Update Server component of Mac OS X Server v10.4

Who the hell let all these Macheads on this forum? What are you doing on Windows IT Pro? Go back to Macworld.com!! And take your silly white overpriced MP3 players and flat keyboards that are impossible to type on with you! Please Macs will not replace PC's anytime soon. They are still much too annoying to use for most people who are used to Windows and actually like having more than 1 mouse button. ;-P

Anonymous User -June 08, 2005

Everyone will be using Macs? dream on... what about the STI Cell processor?... sure, its based on PowerPC architecture, but linux runs like a dream according to the developers... and it will do hardcore 3D rendering without the need for a GPU...

Anonymous User -June 09, 2005

does anyone remember the powerpc? it was supposed to revolutionize macs and in turn signal the end of the PC, was that the thought?

Anonymous User -June 09, 2005

WSUS is light years ahead of SUS. Great improvements in terms of reporting and granular control. I love Macs and Linux too. But windows Does have its place in the server arena...and I'm grateful that we're getting some efficient (and free) tools to automate routine security patches. PS. People: GROW UP..and ditch this 10-year-old mentality of the 'OS wars'. Pick the right tool for the job and quit yer griping. Each OS has its strengths and weaknesses. Pretending otherwise just makes you look like an idiot. I run OSX on my laptop..it's cool, pretty, and very easy..but there's a lot of stuff that I turn to windows to run (and no..not games)
