If you ever read the news you'd know that Sony decided to hold of on incorporating blu ray into the PS3, so that really isn't an issue here.

The Dreamcast 2, er, I mean X-Box 360 has less processing power than both the Playstation 3 and the Revolution. The Playstation 3 will be up to THREE TIMES FASTER according to engineer reports. The Nintendo Revolution will have a four-core 2.5Ghz 64-bit PowerPC G5. X-Box 360 only has three-core. Revolution will also have a special onboard audio processor chip, and a physic processing chip. X-Box 360 has none. The writing's on the wall--X-Box is going to slump behind Nintendo in the upcoming console wars. X-Box is already neck and neck with Nintendo: Sony has 71%, X-Box 15%, and Nintendo 14%. The X-Box is a money-losing PC without a monitor. I don't know why you guys bother. If you want a super-powerful PowerPC-based game-playing machine, why don't you just buy a Powermac G5? Hell, even the X-Box 2 dev kits use Powermac G5s.

Why are you guys so obsessed about the xbox selling at a loss... M$ came to the table late and needed a foot in the door. They had enough faith in their product and the capital to absorb the loss. I'd like to see SONY or Nintendo put their necks out like that for their hardware.

1). It is no secret that Microsoft has lost money on each and every console they sell, and likely will be the same for the next generation (360) as well. This is a basic marketing strategy, and no one makes a product to loose money. However, the way they make their money that will more than offset the loss for their consoles, is through liensing for each and every game sold and played on XBOX. Lets put it this way. To sell the console at a profit would require them to sell them in the 5-6 hundered dollar range. At that price less consumers would buy the console much less the games. And the bottomline is marketshare...the more consoloes...the more games...the more marketshare and revenues. Although I am biased by being an XBOX and XBOX live subscriber, the current version of XBOX is superior in every facet over PS2 and Gamecube. And this is no secret. And will likely have a larger marketshare (currently 17%) by releasing the next gerneation before PS2. It is fair to note that I have all three ystems, and their is no comparison to XBOX's graphics/speed/flexiblility, let alone the XBOX live experience. I look forward to the release of all three platforms and will own them too, but would be very surprised if XBOX, even if released before PS2, will proive to be inferior to PS2. ps....play nice everyone.

Go back to your neverending sports and skateboarding games, ROFL. Nintendo's Revolution has technical specs that beats the Playstation 3 and the "X-Box 360" (god what a dumb name...a bunch of marketing droids sat around worried that "X-Box 2" didn't sound as a good as "Playstation 3" because Sony's number is higher...stupid, and you kids fall for it every time). They are actually shipping a next gen console with only a dvd drive? I assume thats only about 9 gigabytes of storage! Lame. Grand Theft Auto San Andreas shipped on a DL-DVD and maxed out those 9 gb's, and this is a PS2 game!!! Have fun changing dvd's mid-game while I'll have my games on 50 gb blu-ray discs M$ lusers!!!

I could just mention a little thing called 3d projection and giroscopic periphials adding the complimenting 4core processing but I wont. :) Yet the developers for the revolution will hopefully port Morrowind Oblivion which is really the only reason to play xbox 360 in the first place. But they fail to point out the fact that microsoft is a newcomer to this sector of the industry. Nintendo and Sony have been in the video game industry for over 10 years. Nintendo's is dead. It doesn't matter if revolution will have higher specs. The fact of a matter is that it's fan base is decaying due to it's childish games. The only half decent game is metroid prime. PS2 has a great set of games such as GTA, Madden, metal gear, and gran turismo. Xbox has the best specs yet it's market share is very small due to the reasons i mentioned earlier. And BTW for those who don't know, Xbox was realeased in Japan two years after ps2. Xbox2's future looks certainly promising with it's HD compatibility, 3.2 3 processor drives. (the revolution 2.3 4 G5 is not really all that great due to the fact that it has a slower clock speed and the dual core g5 consistantly lags behind p4 and amd in gaming benchmarks. The G5 isn't "old," it's a label that denotes a certain manufacturing generation of Power-based chips. G5s have always eaten x86 chips in tests.

Those specs will not even keep up with my current PC. And all of you think this is what the future will look like, get real, the future will be better, faster, smarter, greater. The future will be PS3. Get used to it.

As for the PS3 I am not sure. True, it will be faster but will they use the speed in any game. So far it is Xbox that pushes the limit. Not just with the graphics but with the style of games. Xbox may not have the number of games ps2 has now but those games are normally better.

I own a PStwo & Xbox, I would have owned a Gamecube but I would have died holding my breath for the next good game to come out for it (Nintendo hold the reins way to tight in the quality control dept.) I don't give a damn who had better specs. Fact of the matter is you can build a quad processor system with physics units and a blow job hole but if you only get a couple of good games with pokemon then there is no point to all that power. A lot of developers are put off by the fact that the sony is using a cell processor because it means they have to learn to program in an entirely different way which means games won't take advantage of it until the end of its life cycle. As for xbox specs yeah they could be better but theyll do the job and since its coming out this christmas and not next its not feasible to use either blu-ray or hd-dvd drives since they are too expensive now and might not even exist in a year. Toshiba hasn't said they aren't talking to sony about merging formats they said they haven't come to an agreement about the merge.

As a hardware engineer, I'd like to direct you to a decent analysis of the cell architecture (performed by a qualified person). Let me dispell some other myths while I'm at it. -XBOX 360 in no logical way will be more powerful than PS3. The time difference in launch affords Sony time to adjust PS3 so that it will have more usable power. Hardware specs are finalize several montns prior to launch for ramp up of production--so XBOX360 will NOT be changing specs for this generation of hardware, regardless of how Sony reacts. -Cell approaches computing in this redefined fashion. It is a hybrid processor in that the controlling processor is the powerful and complex dual-thread processor akin to the RISC type PowerPC processors (the "Giant") of today, which affords programming and backwards compatibility with existing api's and smaller, simpler single-thread processors (the "Dwarves") that are specialized but on steroids. The controlling core performs processing logic as well as delegates processing logic to the other "cells", or smaller processors. Effectively, each Cell processor processes 10 threads at once in the configuration shown (2 complex and 8 simple). In comparison, XBOX 360 has 3 "Giants" for cores. Each is like the controlling processor in the Cell...(for a total of 6 complex threads). It is likely that PS3 will have 4 Cell chips running in parallel, effectively affording it 8 complex threads and 32 simple threads. The more comparable threads processed, the better the performance. PS3 will win here. PS3 has 1 TFLOP+ CPU power. XBOX 360 has 1 TFLOP "total system power", inclusive of GPU's power.

Cont.- -XBOX 360 vs. PS3 is likely to be comparable to usable performance difference between this generations consoles (aka how much more powerful XBOX is than PS2) -Cleverly, Sony is still maintaining the same launch window as last generation (between the two major players). This time they are different players - MS and Nintendo. Last generation, they were Sega and (thought to be) Nintendo (but turned out to be MS). -Nintendo's next generation hardware is coming out in close proximity to Sony's but likely shortly after. This scalability in power (network computing) will keep Cell going in the long run and allow it to even outperform other boxes with more powerful hardware. -Sony and Microsoft may have misjudged the market...underscoring peformance increases in hardware instead of innovative new gameplay (eg. i think the key thing to note here is Micro$oft has gone and abandonned x86 and x64. It is interensting to note that microsft has been seeding POWERMAC G5's as testing/develpment machines. In fact, at E3 microsoft was using apple hardware to power it's Xbox 360 game demos. by the time they all launch, apple will most likely have it's dual dual-core G5's (yeah, thats right, 4 g5 cores) out, practically doubling the power of apple's G5's, and thanks to develpoers already developing for PPC for xbox and revolution, i ams sure we will see yet more apple games development in the near future, perhaps even at the same time or before we see them for x86 and x64. I just think it is awesome microsoft and nintendo have finally realised where the real power is.

Who gives a damn about all these specs anyway? The point is that any differences between the consoles will be marginal, just like this gen. There are small differences between graphics between the consoles this gen, but in the end the graphics all look pretty much the same. I'm glad that even Microsoft is starting to abandon Intel. The x86 architecture is a worthless piece of **** that relies solely on insane heat-producing clockspeed to eke out insignificant performance differences. Whereas modern RISC-based architectures (such as IBM's PowerPC architecture) can match Intel's performance at significantly lower clockspeeds. Of course, those benchmarks that were posted used an entire mac system (not just the processor), which weren't optimized for games and as such probably had *******video cards. What good is an extra few hundred megahertz going to do when each instruction takes 4-6 cycles to complete, anyway? In a good RISC architecture, most instructions (aside from memory access) take a single cycle. So each clock cycle is essentially doing a hell of a lot more than in an x86 system. So before ******** about the G5, maybe stop to think that people who design hardware for a living know what they're doing.

Oh, I also forgot to mention something else: There are two ways to fill up a current gen game disc. One is by putting in CG cinemas (aka FMV), which IMO are a ******* waste of resources. They look pretty, but their costs far outweight their benefits. It's a game, not a movie. Why not spend more time making the game better? Cinemas don't affect the gameplay at all anyway... The second way is by putting in hours upon hours of regular game cinemas (you know, ones rendered in realtime with 3D animations). Again, why the **** would I buy a game just to sit my controller down for 20 minute intervals? I know all you Sony fanboys need your CG and insane amounts of cinemas, but the rest of us real gamers are fine with paying less for a more than adequate storage medium. And while we have fun playing our games, you can have fun playing - err, watching your RPGs - err, movies.

I have read all the comments and I would say about 95% of the poster have no clue as to what they are talking about. I work for IBM.. we make BOTH chips. Cell and PPC. At the core, they're the SAME CHIP. The production 360 PPC chip and the production Cell chip use the SAME CORE running at the same speed. Hell, they came of the same production line. Cell has 7 additional specialized "helper' cores where as the M$ solution is to use 3 full blown PPC cores. They both operate at the SAME SPEED. The Cell chip will help the PS3 in the long run, but most of the current planned games will make little use of the additional cores. From a graphics capability perspective, they both are about equally matched with some very minor differences in reference architecture. M$ has the jump having twice the base system memory of the currently released PS3 specs. But in the end, these are just gaming systems. They are toys, not some life changing religious artifact as most appear to make them out to be.

I've played an xbox 360 before, game was call of duty 2, Graphics weren't very impressive. If you buy a computer today made for gaming and buy Call of duty 2 (If possible) the graphics on the computer would most likely be better. LCD Computer monitor can already produce High quality graphics. The only way to make use of the graphics is by having an HDTV capable of 1080i. but it doesn't matter cause most of the games are made only in 720p unless it's really short then they might have enough memory left on the disc to make it in 1080i. I dont understand why all of you people care, what the **** another system has or does not have... I personally have an Xbox 360, I received it for christmas as a gift, but I fully intend to at least TRY the other 2 systems possibly own them, and you dont see me crying. As for all of you that mock the xbox about "crashing", or "melting" here is the downlow, Overheating, melting, all because people dont read the precautions, says right in the First thing you see when you open the box 'Place xbox on a flat hard surface so all 4 feet touch the surface' most people will ignore this, putting it in their carpet, or bed. This is a bad mistake because it blocks ventilation, thus overheating and possibly melting. 2nd Issue.. Crashing, all I have to say is that the crashing happens in less than 3% of all released systems, fortunately, not mine, but there is this chance that **** like that will happen with your 'PowerPc' ****, its all the same, computers are stupid sometimes, that is the main point.
