An often irreverent look at some of the week's other news...
OS War? OS War!? Ahahahaaa Sometimes wishful thinking for the underdog can get in the way of common sense. In fact, when you think about it, wishful thinking has been Apple Computer's Macintosh strategy since Steve Jobs returned to the company more than 8 years ago. This week, several online reports touted the upcoming "OS war" between Mac OS X Tiger--which is due as early as next month--and Microsoft's ever-delayed Longhorn system, which by most accounts will ship shortly after the US presidential election in 2164. From what I can tell, Tiger will be a big success for Apple, but only in the sense that the earlier Mac OS X versions have been big successes. In other words, Tiger will sell a few million copies and do absolutely nothing to change the Mac's market share, which is now less than 2 percent (although the el cheapo Mac mini might help Apple's market share). Longhorn, meanwhile, will sell in the hundreds of millions of copies in its first couple of years of availability and, like Windows XP, will continue the dominance that Windows has enjoyed since the mid-1990s. I'm not trying to argue that Longhorn will be better than Tiger; I'm just being pragmatic. Microsoft sold more copies of XP while I wrote this blurb than Apple will ever sell of Tiger. That's just how the market is. And anyone who tries to turn the releases of these two systems into some sort of market competition just doesn't get it.
Microsoft Finalizes Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x64 Versions Microsoft declared Wednesday evening that the company will use build 1830 of the x64 editions of Windows Server 2003 and XP for the final (i.e., golden master) versions of those systems. Microsoft actually created build 1830 a few days earlier, on Saturday, March 26, then vetted the build through the company's extensive finalization process throughout the week. Microsoft will launch the products to customers in late April, perhaps at Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) 2005 in Seattle. At that show, not coincidentally, Microsoft will also release its first public Longhorn build since last year's WinHEC show.
Dell, HP: Sorry, EU, But XP N Stands for Nonstarter It will still sell more copies than OS X Tiger, but what a waste of time. This week, representatives of Dell and HP, the world's two largest PC makers, downplayed the effects of the European Union's (EU's) requirement that Microsoft ship special N versions of XP that don't include Windows Media Player (WMP). Dell says it won't offer the products on its PCs. HP said that it will offer XP Home Edition N and XP Professional Edition N but that it expects little demand from customers. HP noted that because the N versions cost the same as the XP versions that include WMP, consumers have little incentive to consider the products. Well, duh.
Microsoft Goes Fishing, Nets 117 Microsoft has filed lawsuits against 117 people the company accuses of launching phishing attacks against consumers. In phishing attacks, the attackers send email messages to unsuspecting users that purport to be from institutions such as banks, credit card companies, and retail stores. The messages attempt to trick recipients into visiting specially made Web sites and providing credit card information or other private data. Phishing attacks are growing dramatically. The number of such attacks has increased more than 25 percent each month since July 2004. Microsoft announced the lawsuits with officials from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the National Consumers League, which are touting today as April Phool's Day in a bid to educate consumers about these scams.
Google Bumps GMail to 2GB, Exciting Its 16 Users This news item might sound like an April Fool's Day joke, but Google announced today that it's immediately raising the storage limit of the GMail email service from 1GB to 2GB and will raise limits again over time as its capacity increases. "Our goal is to make sure storage is no longer an issue for Web mail users," a Google spokesperson said. Hey, that's great. But most people still can't get a GMail account because the company has yet to open the service to the public in a typical, widespread manner, even though GMail supposedly launched a year ago. Google, tear down that wall, and your GMail announcements might be more relevant.
Microsoft Pushes Passport II for Longhorn Microsoft will implement in Longhorn an identification technology called info-cards that will give users a way to control their personal information when shopping at online retailer stores and other Web-based services. If you're thinking that this technology sounds a bit familiar, you're right. For the past several years, Microsoft has been trying to foist an unwanted and similar technology called Passport on its users. Despite its integration with Windows, Passport has been a resounding failure, and my guess is that info-cards are simply another attempt at making a go of Passport. The info-cards technology is a bit more sophisticated than Passport, however; it stores personal information on a user's PC, not on an online server that Microsoft owns. And that information is encrypted so that only trusted Web sites will be able to decode the information.
Going ... Going ... COMDEX Skips Out on 2005 MediaLive International has canceled the once-mighty COMDEX trade show for the second year in a row, creating doubts that the show will ever return. According to company representatives, COMDEX needs at least another year of tweaking before it's ready for primetime. "COMDEX will not be returning to Las Vegas in 2005," a MediaLive representative said this week. "We hope to produce another COMDEX in 2006." Part of the problem might be availability. The Las Vegas Convention Center, which has hosted COMDEX for several years, is almost completely sold out for November. But the truth is that COMDEX has been on the decline for many years. My guess? We've seen the last COMDEX, and if it returns it will be a shadow of its former self.
Firefox 1.0.2 Released In last week's Short Takes, I noted the release of Thunderbird 1.0.2, adding that the 1.0.2 release of Firefox was imminent. Since then, Firefox 1.0.2 has shipped. The new version includes several security fixes and is a highly recommended upgrade. You can find the new Firefox version on the Mozilla Foundation Web site.
Sometimes Embarrassment Is Enough Microsoft agreed this week to drop the $500,000 fine against Jeffrey Lee Parsons, the unfortunate Minnesota teenager who released a version of the Blaster virus that infected 50,000 PCs in 2003. Instead, Parsons will serve 225 hours of community service over 3 years after he finishes serving 18 months in prison. Parsons, you might recall, was caught because he stupidly added the name of his online persona, teekids, to his worm's source code. He's since been vilified as one of the dumbest virus writers ever. What this kid really needs is some parenting. Sadly, it's probably too late for that.
Office Will Be Microsoft's Vietnam Microsoft will soon ship versions of XP and the Microsoft Office productivity suite that have been localized for Vietnam, the first time the company has produced Vietnamese-language products. To make the transition to Vietnamese and, eventually, other localized software products in other markets, Microsoft is using a new Local Language Program in tandem with local and regional governments. This strategy will lead to a range of specially designed XP and Office 2003 products that are custom tailored to specific markets. The move is seen, cynically (and, as it turns out, correctly), as an effort by the software giant to stave off open-source threats such as Linux and OpenOffice.org, a free office productivity suite. How dare Microsoft try to compete?
January Patch Strands Windows Me, Windows 98 Users A security patch that Microsoft issued in January for Windows Me and Windows 98 might still leave users' computers "open to attack," or, in other words, about as secure as they ever were. There's a certain irony in the thought of a security patch not working on Windows Me and Win98 because those systems can't be secured by any means. The company is working on a patch for the patch, however, which must burn the guys in the Microsoft Security Response Center because, as I noted, the whole plan is pointless. If you're still using a Win9x-based OS, I apologize for this rough assessment, but it's time to upgrade.
Thanks, Mark A heartfelt thanks goes out to Mark Joseph Edwards, who covered for me earlier this week while I was in Ireland. And thanks to everyone who asked about my trip. It was fantastic, as expected, although I'm still recovering from the expected jet lag. I should be back to full speed by the end of the weekend.

> If you're still using a 9x-based OS, I apologize for this rough assessment, but it's time to upgrade.
Just call a spade a spade: It's time to buy a whole new PC, because WinXP makes my PC walk, not run.
Oh, and did I mention that means buying a new OEM version of Office, because the licenses aren't transferrable? It must be the jet lag.

Paul, over at internet-nexus, about the impending release of Tiger, you said:
"Heh. Yeah, why would a few outstanding issues ever delay an Apple software release? They'll just continually patch Tiger for the next 18 months anyway. Does this bother anyone else? Nah."
It bothers you Paul, because Apple constantly is improving things while MS is unbelievably slow in comparison. Also, it must bother you a lot that Apple can actually push out point updates without causing more pain than it's worth. On Windows, MS updates can cause more problems than they solve. The process is a pain even if it improves things. On the mac, apple can continually refine things, work out bugs, improve performance, etc. Now do we see why Paul is mad?
Also, after you take Paul's spiteful bias out of the picture, the true facts are as follows. Apple merely needs to send a Gold Master to shipping. It takes a few weeks to press the DVDs, get them to retailers etc. In that period, Apple can work out a few more bugs and then once you install Tiger, it will prompt you to install an update in the next day or two. Seems practical to me.

waltal -April 01, 2005
"And anyone who tries to turn the releases of these two systems into some sort of market competition just doesn't get it."
The 2 articles don't make the "competition" out to be a market competition. They discuss features, what Apple is delivering in a shorter period... what Microsoft is taking years to deliver... (There is brief mention that Apple's marketshare is likely to grow... but this is also backhanded: they say that it's so small it will be easier to grow a little bit.)
Maybe, Paul, you need to pretend that the articles are talking about marketshare so that you can ignore the fact that the articles are dead on: Apple delivers incrementally better features much quicker than Microsoft while Microsoft seems mired in its own sh!t.

Apple's market share is up 3.2% and the rate of increase in sales of Mac's are doubling the industry average, so some reasonable estimates put it at 5% buy the end of this year. Apples 2.9% combined with the longer useful life of the average mac has allowed them to maintain 10-12% of the user base. If the growth is real and the lifespan of mac's remains the same, you should see userbas increases close to 30%. Apple is dealing with a fast growing user base, while MIcrosoft is trying to find a way to maintain their current profit levels while dealing with a shrinking market share. Apple users line up to pay for the next OS, while windows users seem uninterested in giving any more money to Microsoft.
I would say that we are at the battle of the bulge in the OS wars. Microsoft (Germany) is facing a menecing bubble in it's lines from apple (US+England) . BTW did we mention that Linux (Russia) is at work on the eastern front?
Microsoft is losing control of it's empire and the reich is in trouble.

Paul I don't want to GET IT if that means your opinion is that Windows is the OS that matters. Get IT? Mac OS X is great and Windows continues to SUCK in ways that are so ponderous it angers me that Microsoft is still in business. The only thing the Windows monopoly suggests is that people are stupid idiots for using it, especially when the Mac is the best way to go. Anuythibng else is opinion AND stupidity.
Anonymous User -April 01, 2005
Paul is correct. My self-constructed Windows 98SE machine was getting to be a dinosaur. (Although it is still great for playing some older games - especially the ones that do not run on XP.) I HAD to upgrade...and ended up with a fast, productive, secure Apple PowerMac G5.
Take Paul's advice ... UPGRADE your computer and OS! You will not be sorry.
Anonymous User -April 01, 2005
Does anyone know how market share is calculated? It's a percentage of unit shipped from a particular vendor, not installed base.
Every time a PC is shipped from Dell, HP, etc. MS gets 1 tick in the marketshare bucket regardless if the unit ships with an OS on it or not.
It's a very poor qualifier of an installed base, which is a different metric from market share. It's very misleading.
And, what's wrong with daily updates? Should your virus definitions get updated quarterly? Or as a service pack?
It's all about advancing and improving the product. Because the Open Source community is continually improving their offerings and closing holes, many OS vendors need to update their distributions. Is there a problem with providing updates and improvements?
Anonymous User -April 01, 2005
The 3.2% above is the actual market share. now, it was a 15% year over year increase.
By the way did you notice Microsoft's stock performance over thae last year? (single digit) verses Apple's 373%. iPods accounted for a big part of it like every one expected, however the huge spike in Mac sales surprised everyone!

I'll be the first to admit PC hardware is great.
But windows sucks and there's just no improvement, nothing like what apple is doing.
And as much as I like great hardware, it's the software that matters in my book.
Use windows only when you have to, if you ask me.

Anonymous User -April 01, 2005
Boy, I am really getting tired of the bias/ignorance on both the pc and mac fronts. I would believe more of what I read by you and mac heads if you/they spoke in honesty. As is, it is all just a rant. In truth, each are useful/better for certain things. I run them both, network them both, repair them both. Market share is a really poor argument. It's the "mine is bigger than yours" bit. It is rather childish actually. Besides, we all know it's not the quantity but the quality ;-)

What is all the commotion about? Windows has 90%, 95%, or even 175% penetration ... Who cares? ... The author is right. Apple's Tiger is not going to start an OS war with Longhorn. Tiger will hopefully be a wildly successful and forward thinking product drawing many new users to the family. It's not going to put Microsoft out of business. Think about it, it's not going to happen.
Beyond all that, Tiger is not going to compete with Longhorn in any event. Longhorn is hopefully going to ship mid-2006, or whenever. By that time, Apple's Cheetah or Lion or OS will be the point of comparison.
And while I'm pondering, why would anyone want all windows users to switch to MacOS? Toward whom would we sneer if everyone used MacOS?
Why should eagles care what pigs think of the sky. (Guy K)
Anonymous User -April 01, 2005
"I for one can't wait for Longhorn."
Yes, you can. You have no other choice.
"Apple's Tiger is not going to start an OS war with Longhorn."
It depends on what you think a WAR means. Paul is interpreting to mean an actual neck and neck battle for marketshare... which none of these stories have suggested in the least despite his insistence. What the articles are suggesting, and what is, in fact, true is that there will be a feature comparison... There will be a general development comparison: who delivers what, when they say it, on time, and how quickly. Such a war is very real. Paul's comments and our posts make that very clear.

If I thought Windows was going to be the 800 pound gorilla in computing for the next hundred years, I wouldn't have had kids. No, I will admit that XP stays up better than 2000 ever did, but it still ain't UNIX by a long shot. Apple has all the cards right now-- security; UNIX, RISC, a DECENT $500 desktop, and the cool factor. Windows only has inertia-- and those little "honoraria" they pass on to CIO's. HMMM. Anonymous User -April 01, 2005
Paul is right. It is insane to call it 'Os War' since the two run on entirely different processors. Its like comparing Apples to ....?
Even the two Oses are not comparable . One is a pale imitation of the other, is buggy and has tons of viruses, trojans and spyware. Apple wins on quality of hardware and refinement of Os and software while Windows wins on being 'good enough' and being ubiquitous that runs on cheap (and cheap looking?) and power hungry hardware.
All in all agree with Paul

Man, whoever this person screaming CRAPPLE over and over again should find a hobby...or a girlfriend. But that might be asking too much.
As far as who delivers on their promises, Apple's history since ol $1 Jobs came back is as better up there with anyone else in the tech industry. I'm an admitted Apple eunthusiast who also uses XP on a locked down box everyday at work. I use it more than I ever could my Mac at home. XP is not a bad OS as far as getting around and finding your stuff goes. It works as well as OS X. The difference is which one stays out of your way better when you're trying to get something done and OS X IMO (and only MO) is the better of the two.
Now having said all that, there is a reason why XP and MS dominates business and that's available software FOR business. While there are plenty of Mac equivs for most of them, they usually aren't cross-platform or even cross-compatible. Unless someone is running a Mac only shop, it costs them more in IT to support both systems and their related software. Until Apple can lure more developers to the business side of software, they will continue to be an also-ran in business. And let's be honest, THAT'S where the big bucks are.
Before any rabid Mac fans start biting, remember that I am a Mac fan as well (933MHz QS, 933 iBook, and a 450iMac DV for my kids).

If you can harness the best from any of these OSs - you can really make your IT sing.
There is nothing more satisfying than when people ask me what I do - I tell them i'm in computers. They ask the same old no-clue questions. "Oh, OK, then, Macs or PCs?". I say "Computers. If it has a CPU - it's me."

Paulie despises Google for the same reason he doesn't like Apple. To Paul, superior design isn't as important as having a ton of bells and whistles. In general, both Apple and Google products hide the complexity of what they do from the user, which many consider superior design. There's another group of people who get all excited by bells and whistles, and the ability to tinker and mess with things. For those people, Windows is a great choice.

When I came to this Windows site to get some Windows developments, last thing I expected was a bunch if rabid CRAPPLE vermin and ankle bitters snapping and spitting at everyone on site.
Its time these clowns are taken on and taken apart.
Does that indicate in the slightest that my life begins and ends with Windows?
Not on your life!!

Anonymous PC moron: No matter how you twist it, turn it, wiggle and massage it, Windows still trumps CRAPPLY's market share BY FAR. It doesn't even begin to come close. To describe Windows vs CRAPPLE as a war is like saying there is a war between turkeys and mankind at Thanksgiving. This is no war. Its a massacre. And CRAPPLE has been losing for decades.
You can't qualify or quantify this statement. Show me link to an installed base statistic. You won't be able to do it.
90% of stupidity is still stupidity.

Anonymous CRAPPLE buffon, idiot and low life: "You can't qualify or quantify this statement. Show me link to an installed base statistic. You won't be able to do it"
Why don't YOU show me the link to your 12% installed base share for CRAPPLE that you keep screaming about, fool?
Remember, I asked you for proof over an hour ago and you are yet to provide an iota of proof to back your lous boasts.
You provide that proof (if you can that is), and I will show you where I got my Windows market share figures from.
Until then, you are simply blowing hot air, like most CRAPPLE blowhards do every day

This is a Windows site isn't it? You will see more MS backed talk here just as you would see of apple in a Apple website, they don't write good things about windows on their sites do they? So give it a rest.
And saying Windows isn't getting better is pretty dead wrong, most of you saying that probably never used NT back when it started, and looking where the NT code has gone so far, with XP 64bit and Server 2003 you have solid and great gains.
Apple got smart and built OSX on unix code, hell I think half if not more of it is unix based as you can get it without making it into FreeBSD or something of the sort. And keep in mind it took the same unix code to fix something that apple couldn't code themselfs for 9 MacOS versions. Protected memory anyone? Something NT has had for years. And heaven forbid anything went wrong on old MacOS, it wasn't pretty.
So before you go bashing MS for taking years to build longhorn which is using their own code and home grown, remember that Apple had to fall back to unix and NeXT bits to get OSX going, and not even from the start, we're at version 10.4 anyone remember what 10.0 was like? If you do then don't say anything about XP or 2003.
Anonymous User -April 01, 2005
I don't want Apple to start a war with MS. I don't want Apple computers to take over the market. Hasn't anyone else noticed that some of the largest companies in this industry also make some of the worst products?
The reason Apple is a superior platform for most purposes is because Apple has more freedom to be flexible. They're not struggling to protect their empire. They're not steering a thousand ton battleship in an industry filled with speed boats.
I don't think Apple and MS are in competition with each other. People who want a good experience, buy a Mac. People who want the most powerful computer or the latest 3d games buy a PC.
The business sector is starting to leave Windows slowly, but they're not all going to go to Mac and I don't care if they do. I prefer to use the common car analogy.
Windows is the Honda Civic or the Minivan. It's not a bad car, it's just not very sexy and it's really not fun to drive.
Macs are the BMWs and the little european sportster coupes. They have a the same market share and a similar clientelle. People who want to like using their computer, and people who want to spend more on a better EXPERIENCE, tend to go for Macs these days (and this is a new development. Apple made garbage for years before OS X came around). Nobody says that BMW and Honda are at war with each other for dominance in the auto industry. Why exactly are MS and Apple at war with each other and why should we expect them to be?

Anonymous User -April 01, 2005
One question - why does windows in 2005 look like windows in 1995?
OK, one more question - if you keep buying MS's crap, what incentive do they have to make anything better?
Anonymous User -April 01, 2005
Paul... you need to rename this site to Mac Informant. I think every Mac owner on the planet reads your articles.
But I am sure that reading (and the capability to do so) is optional for a Mac user... just like thinking before they type is.
The nice thing about being a Windows owner and fan is that I don't have to feel obligated to defend my O/S. The sales figures speak for themselves. Mac users sure are a very insecure bunch. Just look at the comments...

I swear that Paul writes this stuff just so he and we can stand back and enjoy the virtual equivalent of a bar room brawl at closing time- lots of hot air, wild punches that don't land, roaring and chest thumping about something about as important as last week's papers. YeeeeeeeeeeeHah!

Anonymous User: "So if Mac OS is a BMW"
Mac OS is BMW?
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
You really gave me the biggest joke of the day.
Listen, the fact that Mac OS has a tiny market share doesn't make it a BMW, get it?
I'd say Mac OS is more like a Kia (tiny market share too like Macd OS).
Adequate, but unspeactacular.
Plus most of the world's best brains (Doctors, Engineers, Lawyers, Scientists even programmers etc etc), and most of the world's richest richest people, use Windows.
So that analogy just won't wash.
Anonymous User -April 01, 2005
BMW vs Honda vs Kia... whatever, lighten up before you blow a bllod vessel, it was a J_O_K_E.
So Linux has to be a custom car built on an old Mustang chassis by people with no money and even less taste, that needs 3 people to get it started in the morning, and has no seats for the passengers

We have a hodgepodge of systems in our shop. When you look at it from an administrator view (which I have to), the Macs don't require any support or hand holding beyond the occasional Software Update. No anti-virus crap, gremlins in the system to flush out. They just work. Of the WinTel boxes, the 2K boxes are the least problematic, followed by the Server '03 boxes. XP leads the few 98 stragglers I still have, but not by much. However the 98 boxes rarely need more than a 3 finger salute to get going again. The XP boxes, compared against like hardware 2K powered boxes are also slower than the 2K boxes. Server '03 takes top honors for sluggishness however. It's also got the worst admin utils I've ever seen. I've found each revision of Windows gets slower, while each revision of OSX gets faster, all hardware being the same. Each has it's use, but given the choice, I'd pick nothing but OSX and/or *nix distros everytime. Reality is Windows has a stronghold because of legacy, not quality. Will Apple kill MS marketshare? Of course not. Anyone that thinks otherwise is delusional. However MS share is slipping due to their just good enough to sell philosophy. Failure to acknowledge that is also delusional. But MS has too large a userbase to expect them to just dry up and blow away. Is the Mac a better product? Without question.
old timer
Anonymous User -April 01, 2005
You Crapple Fantatics don't get it:
We don't care if Microsoft products have flaws and are prone to viruses.
We MAKE MONEY supporting them. A lot of money.
If Microsoft made bug free, virus free, easy to use products which were intuitive to configure, a huge, multi-billion dollar industry which employs 10,000's of thousands of people would collapse. To say nothing of the media sites like this, support books, etc.
"Elegance" and "beauty" are opinions. Money is real. And Microsoft makes sure there is plenty of money to go around. And we couldn't be happier--and richer--for it.
So yes, Longhorn will have bugs and viruses and headaches. We couldn't be happier--and well employed--because of it.
Time to grow up and sit at the big people table. Money talks and bullsh*t walks.
Anonymous User -April 01, 2005
Of course Tiger will not move the dial a large amount. It will move it a little bit.
But the problem facing Microsoft and its fan base is that it is not one single force or variable, it's the cumulative effective.
Each force could be discounted, by taken in aggregate, Windows is done. Not tomorrow. Not this decade. But within the next 10-15 years. It happens to leaders in all industries. It's always a wide range of variable over a long period of time. Poke at one, easy, but the cumulation kills ya sooner or later.
For Windows, it will be:
1. Free substitute products.
2. Linux getting to "good enough." MS lowered the expectations bar, and it'll kill them in the end.
3. Quality issues at MSFT
4. Apple innovations and faster development cycles. Consumers like innovations--CIO like cheap--and MSFT just can't compete
5. The culture of MS. It's grown into a big, slow moving company.
6. Choice coming back to the industry. MS became the default. People stopped "choosing." But with Linux, Apple, and others giving good choice, MS will have to compete on quality, which as others have pointed out, is not their strong suit
7. No more illegal games. The governments of the world are watching MS too closely now. The last chance they got to break the law was killing Netscape. They can't pull these tricks any more.
8. The industry is not afraid of MS anymore. Their power is waning, and it shows in the CIO's office.
9. Speaking of CIO's, MS is not as popular as they used to be. No longer will CIO's take the file format gaming, lock-ins, high prices, proprietary, and in general, lack of control.
10. The lack of innovation in the culture. Forget the marketing, and MS hasn't been first with anything revolutionary in the industry.
11. Finally, open systems, always win. Communities always win. MSFY has picked the wrong path.
I am sure there are 500 other things, but the point again is while one of these would not be enough, the cumulative effect will be too much

Anonymous User -April 01, 2005
Hey CRAPPLE-HEAD - is this clear enough for you? Company A takes crushing blows from MS, so what do they do? Comeback with a better product or die. Well, guess what, they're still here. Company B makes billions per month no matter how CRAPPLE their product is - what happens? They become a big fat lazy company that couldn't innovate it's way out of a paper bag. I know which company's getting my $$. I also know which one dumb-a** CRAPPLE head like yourself will go for.

Microsoft only cares about one thing how to get pc people to stop pirating their over priced swiss cheese OS. Apple still does not make you input a serial and activate your OS. Microsoft products are full of bugs and require you to spend lots of money or time to keep your OS running like it's supposed to unless you disconnect it from the internet. Windows XP Sucks. How come every windows user is constantly complaining about popups and blue screens, and viruses? Until Apple releases Tiger Microsoft can not release Longhorn. They will not know what features they need to copy until it's finalized. So keep touting about your inferior $200.00 honeypot. Until it does not boot because you fat fingered a url and your XP box is now sending your personal information out to some kid who is going to ruin your credit all thanks to Microsoft.

Based on the comments here, there's a clear distinction between those that come from refined and educated backgrounds and those well, who do not.
Common people, do you honestly expect someone who doesn't know any better to appreciate the finer things in life. Windoze users will always be windoze users because that's all they know and understand. There's no point wasting your energy trying to convince that type of crowd. It's like taking a farmer and expecting him to appreciate a 50 year old wine. Common now.. everyone lives best at their level.
Windoze users are accustomed to working with that ****. They find their way around and are happy. The finer and more advanced things in life (and not just Macs, but everything in general), are not meant for everyone. The reality is, there are more commoners than refined people.
This is simply how the world works. So if all you windoze users really think you have it best, then by all means enjoy it. You will never understand what a Mac user experiences simply because you are too limited and insecure to move up in life. But that's fine, the world needs all types of people. It's because of the likes of you that people like Bill Gates become billionaires. See, the only thing smart thing Bill Gates knew and marketed on is the fact that 90% of the world is ignorant when it comes to technology.
Unfortunately for him though, that world is changing....
Anonymous User -April 01, 2005
Apple users are a marketer's dream. They are sold an underpowered, overpriced product and moreover, they love them and think they ended up with the best buy. Apple execs must love their userbase, and I certainly would: you could kick around the boardroom all day, chuckling about the massive differential between cost and price that exists solely due to branding.
More fool them, I suppose.
Anonymous User -April 01, 2005
From the grammar, spelling and general attitude of the poster responsible for the post 2 above this, it is clear that he does not come from a "refined and educated" background.

Geez, I know a lot of y'all hate Paul Thurrott for his needless slamming of all things Apple (Paul, did you really need to throw in that Apple wisecrack in your piece about Corel Wordperfect a few weeks ago?), but even the folks at MacWorld (whom I'd assume would be much more supportive of Apple and Macs) have placed Apple's marketshare at just the high end of 2% (see: http://www.macworld.com/news/2005/03/20/marketshare/index.php ). Sure, I can see 4 or 5% at the end of the year if they do everything right, but don't go overboard in the hyperbole.
Anonymous User -April 01, 2005

DonnEdwards -April 02, 2005
I guess Paul hasn't been paying attention to the fact that Apple has been gaining marketshare at nearly .1% A MONTH for the past year... and grew from 1.8% marketshare in March of 2003 to 3.0% marketshare in March of 2005. Analysts predict that they could gain an additional 3% this year just from halo effect of the iPod and Mac Mini.

Gotta love how the last "security update" disabled Google and made the default search MSN.
Yeah guys, way to stick up for a massively unethical company. Pathetic.
Anonymous User -April 02, 2005
Go away Apple people, you're scaring me. I'm a MCSE and if you guys keep getting all the attention and increase marketshare some of my friends will lose their jobs! Patching and patching and patching keeps my department busy and all my friends back in India who answer technical questions from dumb Americans on the telephone will not be able to feed their families. Paul Therrott is a nice man who just wants to keep everyone in a job. We all benefit from Microsoft's market dominace and buggy, insecure software. Anonymous User -April 02, 2005
Paul, let's be pragmatic, you are biased!
The only point that is correct in your whole article is that MS will ship more copy's of longhorn than Apple will of Tiger. However, its very likely that by the time Longhorn ships, Apple will have an additional, new, OS X update.
Your blindness has picked the wrong battle... Apple is not the next Microsoft (thank god).... but it's beginning to look like Apple is the next IBM. Think massive quiver of patents in both hardware and software, industry leading performance and security...mission critical installations. I dont think that sounds like Microsoft, not now, not ever.

After reading some of the comments in this forum, are there any mac fans posting replies here
that are actually at least over thirty years of age, and seems to not have the mind set of a second year college undergrad.
As a windows XP user, I have a friend who is a devoted mac fan and the proud owner of 6 month old power book, I've used it, it's nice, what do I like about OSX versus Xp, the interface is a little nicer, a bit more intuitive, which is cool.has less virus and spyware problems because the market share hasn't waranted the attention of the virus writers..Yet,
What don't I like about it, I don't care to pay apple prices for apple hardware, no real competion so no price wars among vendors, which usually gives the comsumer more choice.
Asthetics wise, I don't really care for the white
i books color them, I like the power book look a little better, but the whole silver thing, like with cell phone manufacturers, is getting old, I prefer the basic black look, like the old power books and some of the pc powered lap tops out there. but that's my taste.
But the biggest this I dislike about macs, have really nothing to do with apple or Steve Jobs,...
Its the fans, what a complete turn off, if you want some one to see your point of view, drop your aggression and insulting attitude, and try a diplomatic approach to sharing your point of view.
Will OS X Tiger be a great, I think so, though it is a point upgrade, an extensive one on an already 5 plus year old operating system, just like Xp. people seem to forget that service pack 2 was almost a complete redo of the Xp kernel, that seesm to be lost on a lot of people, especially certain journalists with selective memories.
Os X tiger will continue to make and solidify the mac fan base and probably convert a few new fans, and deservingly so.
Longhorn I suspect, will be very well thought out, and a LOT better than any present windows or Mac fan knows, outside of some Key people at Microsoft.
Just my two cents.

Like this right?
"Apple Computer's worldwide market share fell to 1.8% in the third quarter of this year from 2.1%, and dropped to 3.2% from 3.6% in the U.S., according to figures from research company Gartner. The numbers also showed dramatic declines in the quarter-to-quarter growth rate of Macs sold while Apple's Windows-based competitors saw double digit increases in the U.S and an almost 10% rise worldwide."
And this?
"Apple Western Europe share drops .5%
But it was sales in Western Europe that had the most dramatic drop for Apple. The company's market share fell a half-a-percent to 1.5% in Q3, after a 2.0% share in Q2. Units sales plummeted by 29,500 to 147,300 from 176,800.
Compared to other PC vendors, Apple had a whopping 16.7% decline in unit growth in Western Europe from the previous quarter. While Apple declined, its competitors gained 11.2% in unit growth from Q2. Apple's growth year-to-year in Western Europe was off 0.7%, while other PC makers had a combined 13% rise.
The leader in Western Europe market share was HP in first place with a 16.6% share, followed by Dell with 10.8% and Acer at 7.2%."

Apple lost in games. Apple lost in performance. Apple lost in sales. There is no war. MS has more to fear about linux. Apple will remain the underdog of the pc industry even when they have the nicest icons in the business.
usability? BS. At work we used G3s G4s and recently intead of going to G4 we got upgraded to PCs. Productivity has not been affected, in fact has increased as our new platform performs way better for less cost and all our app skills migrated to the PC platform with no trouble.
That's why the macs only show in single digits of market share. They are simply lots of hype and no real value.
Anonymous User -April 02, 2005
"Company A takes crushing blows from MS, so what do they do? Comeback with a better product or die. Well, guess what, they're still here."
Still here.. with a miserable 2% market share.
Hehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehehe.
You still lose, fool!!
Anonymous User -April 02, 2005
mac fans are hopeless. But you can't blame them. It's got to suck to have to pay 129 bucks to apple each year for the same old OS with a few new options that are hardly worth the price.
but apple is so small it's the only way that can make money.
if longhorn at least matches tiger, it will still cost far less than $129 X 4 osX upgrades.
hey apple you have a 500+ bucks OS that.

Mr. CRAPPLE head - are you serious, you think that half baked piece of sh** from 1995 even comes close to OS X? HA HA HA HA HA. You think WINDOOZE is secure, while the mac is not. HAHA HA HA HA HA. Man, when do you get the lobotomy? You are the dumbest a** idiot I've seen this week, and I see lot of dumb MCSEs every week. Man, any retard can see how apple is moving forward and MS is standing still. Any retard but you.

win95 kicked apple's butt buddy. just face it.
After win95 came out apple was sent spiriling down to dark rooms in graphic sweat shops.
I didn't say win95 kicked OSX. apple fans can't read. They need icons to read. lolz
or maybe they don't remember system 8 and 9? that's what apple had, and lost horribly to MS.

Why is MS so slow? Why can't they improve anything more than every 10 years? Man, every year to 18 months apple is coming out with an improved OS, improved iLife, new pro apps, new this and new that. WINDOZE may have the share, but it still SUCKS, SUCKS, SUCKS. It looks lame, it multitasks lame, its virus-ridden. No amount of pathetic denial from the MR. CRAPPLEHEADS will change the facts, sorry!!!
Anonymous User -April 02, 2005
"Why is MS so slow? Why can't they improve anything more than every 10 years?"
Listen, idiot.
Windows (NT) had had every single implementation of a mordern OS BEFORE CRAPPLE, including protected memory, true pre-emptive multitasking etc etec.
LOOONG before CRAPPLE even dreamt of it.
CRAPPLE is the king of slow!
Don't even go there!
Anonymous User -April 02, 2005
Now MR. CRAPPLEHEAD, you'll never get this because your IQ about 10, but hey, I'll try. WINDOOZE large share is part of the reason it SUCKS so bad. WINDOOZE is like some big turd rolling down the hill slow and steady. It can't turn around, it can't change direction. It's just a morass with nobody in control (MS makes the OS and Office, but the rest of the pieces come from other venders). Nobody's in control, it's so big it's out of control. Plus, dull WINDOOZE users and dull MCSEs don't tolerate change well, so MS is limited how much they can even do. The whole wintel thing is BORING AND DULL, just like MR. CRAPPLEHEAD. Except maybe the games, but then those are for 15 year olds with no girlfriends.
Anonymous User -April 02, 2005
buying a mac is close to a scam IMO. you are promised a super performance computing wonder....which honestly doesn't deliver for the price tag.
that's why it apple can never be more than 2% of the marketshare.
now if they opened their platform to hardware makers it may be more competitive. but nobody will go with a platform that dictages both the OS, the hardware and what you do with it or not. Apple's business model is fundamentally flawed for growth beyond underdog status.
I'd love to go to newegg.com and build my own mac and put the OS of my choice on it.
hey apple can always make OSX for PCs. now that would sell better.

apple heads don't even know what multitasking means. They just repeat the apple propaganda. Apple didn't even have support for multi-user logon on a single PS when XP shipped with it.
see they think they inveted it when their loved OSX was pretty lame when it came to multi-user multi-tasking.
and actually apple didn't event any of it. They are just standing on the shoulders of unix because the macOS design was simply inferior and their engineers really coudln't take it to the a level that could compete with MS.
OSX's decision to base on unix is the ultimate testing to apple's lame OS architecture, that they had to get somebody's core to come up with something competent. wow, apple is cool.

MR. CRAPPLEHEAD, MR." I LACK ANY IMAGINATION SO ALL I CAN DO IS SAY CRAPPLE OVER AND OVER":

I was reading these comments just kind of laughing at the ludicrous stupidity of many of the comments. I lost my sense of humor when I realized that our political debate has become about as reasoned and insightful as this stupid discussion. It is truly sad that honest and reasonable discussion, especially about issues we disagree about, seems to be nearly impossible to achieve. As for what computer platform people choose to use -- who cares! As for what kind of world we will leave our grandchildren it is a huge deal yet we can't elevate the debate above a grade school level name calling session.
I do choose to use one platform primarily. However, I have learned things from the other platform. When one side doesn't see anything they can learn from the other side there is likely something very wrong with their arrogance.

Hey guess what kind of development boxes Microsoft is using to develop the software for the next XBox which of course will run on PowerPC?
They are PowerMac G5s made by Apple. I'm sure this makes the Crapple Guy happy!
How you like them Apples Crapple Guy HAHAHAHHAHHA!

"Hey guess what kind of development boxes Microsoft is using to develop the software for the next XBox which of course will run on PowerPC? "
# 1, the current XBOX which is what has captured 2nd place for the XBOX in game consoles in the first place has abslolutely nothing to do with CRAPPLE
# 2, Microsoft is using the those CRAPLE machines as a temporary tempporary measure untill XBOX 2 design and implementation is finalised and working units are available for developers to work on
# 3, Even the CRAPPLE boxes Microsoft is shipping to game developers are rinning the XBOX operating system , slidly based on Windows.
No Mac OS here.
#4, the processor for the XBOX 2 is an IBM processor, not a CRAPLE processor.
And ...CRAPPLE still has that miserable market share.
Windows still rules, even on the CRAPLE boxes being shipped to XBOX 2 developers.

It's about tools... not a religious war. I use both platforms daily. They both have strengths and weaknesses. It's only sheer ignorance or ego that keeps one side or the other from being able to acknowledge this fact. I suspect there is a good chance that Apple gains an additional 2-3% marketshare this year... this in no way threatens Microsoft or any other competitor. As I said... they are simply tools. I don't pick my drill because it was made by Black & Decker.... I pick the best drill for my needs. In the computer realm this means sometimes using Linux... sometimes BSD... sometimes Windows... and sometimes MacOS X. It's really as simple as that.

So... by your logic then.... Republicans and Democrats are the only people with any legitimate ideas. So... any other person running for the Presidency is inferior or lacks the necessary skills to be the President.
What a narrow-minded perspective.
Fact is... people vote, purchase, associate, etc. with what the KNOW and what they are COMFORTABLE WITH.... not some almighty intelligent research into any given subject.
Oh... and another side of human nature you seem to have missed. People are highly resistant to change. It's a provable, historic fact.

"According to Apple, when Safari's "Block Pop-Up Windows" feature is not enabled, a malicious pop-up window COULD appear as being from a trusted site. If the "Block Pop-Up Windows" feature is enabled, then this issues does not occur. The update corrects the issue regardless of the setting."
The magic word here is COULD... COULD. There isn't any instance of ACTUAL exploitation.... only proof of concept. There isn't one actual instance of a virus or spyware app on MacOS X. That's not saying that their COULDN'T be... but it will be much more difficult in many ways because installation of a malicious program that could trash the OS or operate at an adminstrative level would require an administrative or root password to install.
Another little fact you probably missed is that downloading of updates is ON by default. In my 5 years of running OS X on some of the Macs in our facility I've YET to run into some major problem with security updates. In fact, in my experience.. the only major flaw I ever saw in OS X was in 10.3.4... where certain manufacturers SCSI cards ceased to be recognized... this was patched shortly thereafter in 10.3.5.

Security holes under OS X have numbered less than 50 since it's inception. All known holes except 3 have been patched to date. The Windows side has historically had hundreds of holes. With loads of these having been exploited in ACTUALITY... not just THEORETICALLY. Really huge difference. In fact.. here you go from you beloved Secunia... holes that are rated HIGHLY CRITICAL:
"Microsoft Windows XP Professional with all vendor patches installed and all vendor workarounds applied, is currently affected by one or more Secunia advisories rated HIGHLY CRITICAL.
This is based on the most severe Secunia advisory, which is marked as "Unpatched" in the Secunia database. Go to Unpatched/Patched list below for details.
CURRENTLY, 22 OUT OF 88 SECUNIA ADVISORIES, IS MARKED AS "UNPATCHED" IN THE SECUNIA DATABASE."
In fact... Microsoft Server 2003 has had 45 MAJOR HOLES found in the OS.
Contrast this with Apple's which are labeled LESS CRITICAL:
"Apple Macintosh OS X with all vendor patches installed and all vendor workarounds applied, is currently affected by one or more Secunia advisories rated LESS CRITICAL.
This is based on the most severe Secunia advisory, which is marked as "Unpatched" in the Secunia database. Go to Unpatched/Patched list below for details.
CURRENTLY, 3 OUT OF 47 SECUNIA ADVISORIES, IS MARKED AS "UNPATCHED" IN THE SECUNIA DATABASE."

Nothing more.

Going by your theory, CRAPPLE should be leading in the market today, because people were comfortable with it long beore Dos and certainly ages before Windows.

"The magic word here is COULD... COULD"
Bottom line
Weee these HUGE security holes in CRAPPLE? YESS!
Are all security holes just security holes untill someone actually decides to make use of those security holes? YOU BET!
Its like leaving your door open when you go to sleep in the Bronx and not having anyone come steal your stuff that night.
Does it mean you were not vulnerable to attack that night? Nope.
If you continue to leave your door opened long enough, you will get robbed or even worse.
CRAPLE has had huge securty holes in their crappy OS.
Only thing is, CRAPPLE market share is so tiny, and CRAPPLE is used by so few Fortne 500 comoanies to ryn their main business that malicious virus writers, and hackers just don't bother much with it.
Does that make CRAPLE's security holes safe?
Not a chance!

"CRAPPLE started making computers before Microsoft even went into operating systems. Going by your theory, CRAPPLE should be leading in the market today, because people were comfortable with it long beore Dos and certainly ages before Windows."
Nope.... IBM had a much more powerful marketing engine than Apple ever did... and Microsoft simply launched off the success of IBM. Whereas Apple basically came up with something completely unrelated to IBM's existing market space.
It's simple Economics 101... couple this with the fact that Apple was retarded and got rid of Steve Jobs in the 80's. In my opinion... this is the biggest mistake they ever made... and as such suffered their losses because they lost their fiery visionary.
Oh... and you may want to check your history... Steve Jobs went off to create NEXT Computers... you know... computers based on UNIX. MacOS X is UNIX based not because Apple wasn't working on some fully multi-threaded and protected OS... because they were. But when Steve Jobs came back on board, the agreement was to purchase NEXT and it's employees. Jobs took what he learned/experienced in that arena and applied it to the Mac.
Truth is... the G5 is the first (in my opinion) Mac system that was truly bleeding edge when it was released. It is a very fast system.. and don't pull out specs and numbers... because I'm sure that there is software that is more optimized for the PC... just as there is software that is more optimized for the Mac. But for what I do for a living... the Mac outpaces the PC in sheer crunch power when comparing the bang-for-the-buck. I'm an owner of a company... I don't have time or inclination to love one product more than another... it's purely based on what makes the best fiscal sense.... which in my case is sheer CPU speed with the applications we use.
Anonymous User -April 02, 2005
"Nope.... IBM had a much more powerful marketing engine than Apple ever did"
CRAPPLE made PC's long before IBM came into the PC business.
Go check your history will you?
And Microsoft just used to make development told and languages when CRAPPLE first started making PC's.

Paul,
First off, you stats are lies. Damn lies and you know it. Shame on you. Here's the link:

Here's a quote:
"Gartner showed Apple Computer gaining share in 2004, thanks in part to its revamped iMac G5 all-in-one desktop computer. Apple closed out 2004 with 3.2% of the US PC market, up from 2.9% in 2003, and the fifth largest US PC maker, the firm said.
"Apple is on a roll right now," Smulders said."
It's interesting to see how your articles attract so many ignorant, bigoted Apple-bashing 12 year-olds. These people are the lowest form thread troll on earth. Where and why could they have developed such wasteful hate for a company and platform that can be totally irrelevant to their lives. They might as well be ranting and raving about a Norwegian boating firm. If you don't use Apple's products, they shouldn't matter to you. You shouldn't be passionate about them. Those who are, like the many "CRAPPLE!!" fanatics are the real zealots. These are people so insecure in their choice of computer that they wish away the alternatives. More sad and pathetic is that they clearly derive person value from feeling that they're using the "winning" platform. Sad, pathetic, and so damned ignorant. Do you people have any idea what the computing world would be like without Apple? USB would have taken much longer to gain acceptance. WIFI would have taken longer too. Never mind the obvious fact that Apple has single handedly created the entire legal digital music market. Apple's innovation is a tide that lifts all boats.
MS on the other hand is a bully whose entrance into a market breeds stagnation and death. They are a convicted illegal monopolist who actively subverts standards (CSS 2 for one example of hundreds) to hurt competitors and users. When I come across a website that won't render in Firefox or Safari, I have Microsoft to thank. How has Apple hurt any of you apple-bashing trolls?
Now Paul, at least you use Apple gear and, at least claim to, want them to succeed. You're a smarter guy than your Mac-user baiting implies, but your belief that there is a need for a "counter-weight" to Apple's own hype and the hype of it's users is both egotistical and absurd. The counterweight is Microsoft's ill-gotten desktop monopoly, a monopoly that has lead to hundreds of dead competitors and third parties and hardware OEMs too scared to innovate. You're at your best when you point out true failings or give balanced factual reviews. These blurbs dripping with sarcastic anti-Apple bias are credibility busters.
Just look at the morons in this comments section that rated the article a 5. Enough said. You kids should spend more time doing your homework.
kindly,
John P

Apple came out in 1977 and IBM came out in 1981... however... IBM already OWNED the mainframe market in the business world... so they had the advantage of precedence and reputation in the computing world.

Wow... and that wonderful Microsoft has been so considerate to make sure that their OS's past and present (outside of 2003 server) are all rated HIGHLY CRITICAL. Including as Windows 2000 Server!... which STILL has a huge install base.

One more thing....
Do any of you PC Zealots know why market share matters? Market share helps motivate 3rd party developers to create applications for a platform based on it's continued sales and success, which adds functionality and value to the platform. The network effects of compatibility are largely irrelevant in the internet era. Macs and PCs share files, networks and printers with ease. It's the third party software that's the key to market share relevance.
This is why the Mac isn't a great platform for gamers. However, OSX has seen it's developer ranks more than double during the past two years.
Here's the quote from Forbes.com:
"Apple's developer community has grown in size by 250% during the last two years, primarily as a result of Mac OS X and its allure to Unix developers, reports the Australian IT. Also contributing to the gains: Apple's adoption and involvement in a number of open source projects and its embrace of the open source development community. "
So Apple is gaining share and on their way to tripling their developer base... These are the facts. Just like it's a fact that 3 years after the launch of the first iPod, not one competitor's product is close. It's amazing how well Apple's products can do when they aren't battling an illegal monopoly (well I guess technically they are but MS can't break iTunes on Windows the way they would have in year's past). Funny, 2004 brought a boatload of "ipod killers" and yet Apple's player share is up. Hmmm.....

An often irreverent look at some of the week's other news...
OS War? OS War!? Ahahahaaa
Sometimes wishful thinking for the underdog can get in the way of common sense.
Microsoft Finalizes Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x64 Versions
Microsoft declared Wednesday evening that the company will use build 1830 of the x64 editions of Windows Server 2003 and XP for the final (i.e., golden master) versions of those systems.
Dell, HP: Sorry, EU, But XP N Stands for Nonstarter
It will still sell more copies than OS X Tiger, but what a waste of time. Well, duh.
Microsoft Goes Fishing, Nets 117
Microsoft has filed lawsuits against 117 people the company accuses of launching phishing attacks against consumers.
Google Bumps GMail to 2GB, Exciting Its 16 Users
This news item might sound like an April Fool's Day joke, but Google announced today that it's immediately raising the storage limit of the GMail email service from 1GB to 2GB and will raise limits again over time as its capacity increases.
Microsoft Pushes Passport II for Longhorn
Microsoft will implement in Longhorn an identification technology called info-cards that will give users a way to control their personal information when shopping at online retailer stores and other Web-based services.
Going ... Going ... COMDEX Skips Out on 2005
MediaLive International has canceled the once-mighty COMDEX trade show for the second year in a row, creating doubts that the show will ever return.
Firefox 1.0.2 Released
In last week's Short Takes, I noted the release of Thunderbird 1.0.2, adding that the 1.0.2 release of Firefox was imminent. Since then, Firefox 1.0.2 has shipped. The new version includes several security fixes and is a highly recommended upgrade. You can find the new Firefox version on the Mozilla Foundation Web site.
Sometimes Embarrassment Is Enough
Microsoft agreed this week to drop the $500,000 fine against Jeffrey Lee Parsons, the unfortunate Minnesota teenager who released a version of the Blaster virus that infected 50,000 PCs in 2003.
Office Will Be Microsoft's Vietnam
Microsoft will soon ship versions of XP and the Microsoft Office productivity suite that have been localized for Vietnam, the first time the company has produced Vietnamese-language products.
January Patch Strands Windows Me, Windows 98 Users
A security patch that Microsoft issued in January for Windows Me and Windows 98 might still leave users' computers "open to attack," or, in other words, about as secure as they ever were.
Thanks, Mark
A heartfelt thanks goes out to Mark Joseph Edwards, who covered for me earlier this week while I was in Ireland. And thanks to everyone who asked about my trip. It was fantastic, as expected, although I'm still recovering from the expected jet lag. I should be back to full speed by the end of the weekend.

Anonymous User -April 01, 2005 (Article Rating: )
Anonymous User -April 01, 2005 (Article Rating: )
The 3.2% above is the actual market share. now, it was a 15% year over year increase.
By the way did you notice Microsoft's stock performance over thae last year? (single digit) verses Apple's 373%. iPods accounted for a big part of it like every one expected, however the huge spike in Mac sales surprised everyone!

(Guy K)

HMMM. Anonymous User -April 01, 2005 (Article Rating: )

Paulie despises Google for the same reason he doesn't like Apple. To Paul, superior design isn't as important as having a ton of bells and whistles. There's another group of people who get all excited by bells and whistles, and the ability to tinker and mess with things. For those people, Windows is a great choice.

3. Quality issues at MSFT 4. Apple innovations and faster development cycles. Consumers like innovations--CIO like cheap--and MSFT just can't compete 5. The culture of MS. It's grown into a big, slow moving company. 6. Choice coming back to the industry. MS became the default. People stopped "choosing." But with Linux, Apple, and others giving good choice, MS will have to compete on quality, which as others have pointed out, is not their strong suit 7.

An often irreverent look at some of the week's other news...
OS War? OS War!? Ahahahaaa
Sometimes wishful thinking for the underdog can get in the way of common sense.
Microsoft Finalizes Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x64 Versions
Microsoft declared Wednesday evening that the company will use build 1830 of the x64 editions of Windows Server 2003 and XP for the final (i.e., golden master) versions of those systems.
Dell, HP: Sorry, EU, But XP N Stands for Nonstarter
It will still sell more copies than OS X Tiger, but what a waste of time. Well, duh.
Microsoft Goes Fishing, Nets 117
Microsoft has filed lawsuits against 117 people the company accuses of launching phishing attacks against consumers.
Google Bumps GMail to 2GB, Exciting Its 16 Users
This news item might sound like an April Fool's Day joke, but Google announced today that it's immediately raising the storage limit of the GMail email service from 1GB to 2GB and will raise limits again over time as its capacity increases.
Microsoft Pushes Passport II for Longhorn
Microsoft will implement in Longhorn an identification technology called info-cards that will give users a way to control their personal information when shopping at online retailer stores and other Web-based services.
Going ... Going ... COMDEX Skips Out on 2005
MediaLive International has canceled the once-mighty COMDEX trade show for the second year in a row, creating doubts that the show will ever return.
Office Will Be Microsoft's Vietnam
Microsoft will soon ship versions of XP and the Microsoft Office productivity suite that have been localized for Vietnam, the first time the company has produced Vietnamese-language products.
January Patch Strands Windows Me, Windows 98 Users
A security patch that Microsoft issued in January for Windows Me and Windows 98 might still leave users' computers "open to attack," or, in other words, about as secure as they ever were.

Take Paul's advice ... UPGRADE your computer and OS! You will not be sorry.

Anonymous User -April 01, 2005 (Article Rating: )
The 3.2% above is the actual market share. now, it was a 15% year over year increase.

Paul is interpreting to mean an actual neck and neck battle for marketshare... which none of these stories have suggested in the least despite his insistence. What the articles are suggesting, and what is, in fact, true is that there will be a feature comparison... There will be a general development comparison: who delivers what, when they say it, on time, and how quickly. Such a war is very real. Paul's comments and our posts make that very clear.
Paul's Fact Checker -April 01, 2005 (Article Rating: )
If I thought Windows was going to be the 800 pound gorilla in computing for the next hundred years, I wouldn't have had kids. No, I will admit that XP stays up better than 2000 ever did, but it still ain't UNIX by a long shot. Apple has all the cards right now-- security; UNIX, RISC, a DECENT $500 desktop, and the cool factor. Windows only has inertia-- and those little "honoraria" they pass on to CIO's. HMMM. The latter has worked for them so far.....
Anonymous User -April 01, 2005 (Article Rating: )

Anonymous User -April 01, 2005 (Article Rating: )

Anonymous User -April 01, 2005 (Article Rating: )

From the grammar, spelling and general attitude of the poster responsible for the post 2 above this, it is clear that he does not come from a "refined and educated" background.
Culture is the curse of the middle class, and there is nothing more pathetic than a stupid prosumer who thinks a plastic box will elevate them to the giddy heights of socio-economic success.

This pro-Apple anti-Apple debate is boring. Don't you folks have a life or something?
DonnEdwards -April 02, 2005 (Article Rating: )
I guess Paul hasn't been paying attention to the fact that Apple has been gaining marketshare at nearly .1% A MONTH for the past year... and grew from 1.8% marketshare in March of 2003 to 3.0% marketshare in March of 2005. Analysts predict that they could gain an additional 3% this year just from halo effect of the iPod and Mac Mini.

4 Critical Flaws found in IE, Windows, and Outlook in the past 24 hours.
Serious, PC guys, you don't have time to post here. You should be patching your systems, running anti-virus software, anti-spyware software, fixing the registry, rebuilding your machines, and all of the other crap you need to do on a daily basis to keep 1% secure on the Windows platform.
So go along now. Go patch. Go clean. We'll be here waiting for you when you come back. We don't mind the wait. We understand that being a PC requires a lot of extra care.

# 1, the current XBOX which is what has captured 2nd place for the XBOX in game consoles in the first place has abslolutely nothing to do with CRAPPLE
" Your right Crapple Guy it doesn't but when Microsoft decided what they needed to compete with the next generation of game consoles Microsoft decided that X86 performance is Peice of Crap and decided to go with PowerPC."
# 2, Microsoft is using the those CRAPLE machines as a temporary tempporary measure untill XBOX 2 design and implementation is finalised and working units are available for developers to work on"
Sure, sure...sources? HAHAHHAHAHHAHa!
# 3, Even the CRAPPLE boxes Microsoft is shipping to game developers are rinning the XBOX operating system , slidly based on Windows. No Mac OS here.
" Don't kid yourself. Apple didn't make a special version of the G5 for Microsoft. Microsoft is not their biggest customer. Those machines came to Microsoft with MacOSX installed and Microsoft removed and installed an updated PowerPC NT kernel.
"#4, the processor for the XBOX 2 is an IBM processor, not a CRAPLE processor."
Actually Microsoft could have gotten a dual 970 system from other system integrators. Why choose Apple?
Your going to have a busy day today fool responding to all the PC and Mac people refuting your claims.

I agree: The OS wars are long since over, and OS X is so far ahead of WinXP it's not even funny. I use both OSs every day. OS X because i like an OS that doesn't crash and that i only restart for security patches that patch things that never were a problem in the first place.
WinXP because i need it for work.
And that's the name of the game: People who must use windows XP, people who know choose OS X, whereas the rest is people who have no clue about either but need a computer. These people increasingly buy macs. Look at college kids. They all buy macs. It's iBooks everywhere. More importantly, no one who has ever used a mac wants to go back to windows.
Whereas windows users are just used to the mess they are in, live with constant restarting and funkiness and calling upon their geek friends to help them. WinXP is just not bad enough for people to abandon it in droves.
Apple market share is going to grow considerably. Apple will be the computer of choice for the money elite. But in many parts of the world (like where i am now in south east asia) Apple is not even competing. You just can't buy a mac here, and if you do find the single mac retailer in the whole country, you pay a 50% premium over US prices. Surprising as it is, Apple is not competing in large parts of the world. If Apple ever decides to, watch out. Apple won't have more market share than windows, but it will be bigger than Dell.

Is there any point to all this flaming? Apple fans will continue to bang on about how fantastic Apple products are for a long time to come, and nothing, not Paul, not I, nor any dose of common sense will stop that.
Apple Macs are OK bits of kit. OSX is an OK operating system. The main point that I think Paul allways maintains is that Apple should not ask people to pay so much for upgrades that really aren't that major.
Apple users point to Apple's continuing 'innovation' in releasing new versions of the OS, with new features.
I point to Microsoft's continual innovation in releasing new products for XP, for free.
We've gotten new versions of Media player and Movie Maker for free, new versions of MSN Messenger. New features like Media Connect, and better wireless networking support and support for bluetooth.
Enhancements like digital media 'fun packs', and updated photo tools.
Oh sure, I'm sure plenty will scoff ay me pointing these things out with a typical 'OSX does that WAAAY better', but in reality, on Windows I get all this stuff for free, and can acheive things just as well as I can on OSX, at considerably lower cost.
Anonymous User -April 04, 2005
As far as whether Apple or Microsoft gives you more value for money... it's pretty clear. You can count the free software Apple distributes on the fingers of one hand, and all of it except iTunes is for their proprietary OS which 3 in 100 people use. Microsoft is continuously releasing new versions of it's software as a free upgrade. Photostory, Media Player 10, Messenger, MSN Browser, IE, (*snicker*,) an integrated Firewall for XP, the .net framework, the list goes on. However, not only it's platforms but others. MSN Browser for Mac OS X. MSN Messenger for Mac OS X. There are many more.
Anonymous User -April 04, 2005
"I point to Microsoft's continual innovation in releasing new products for XP, for free."
And I point to a company so awash in monopoly money from Windows licenses that they can price dump like crazy. Steve Jobs accepts $1 a year as a salary because he has Billions and loves Apple. Microsoft gives away free software because they make more money than God on Windows and Office (and essentially lose money on EVERYTHING ELSE). If it wasn't for their dual monopolies, illegally established and maintained, I'm not even sure if Microsoft would be all that profitable at all.
Take away the Windows revenue and see how many "Free" applications they give away. Also notice that these "free" apps are almost always strategic monopoly maintenance technologies like Windows Media 10.
Glad they gave away bluetooth and wifi for free, since OSX has had robust support for both for over 3 years. Last time I checked, Apple gives away iTunes and QuickTime for free on BOTH PLATFORMS WITH TOTAL FEATURE PARITY.
Apple also gives away their complete Xcode IDE for software developement FOR FREE. These "look how great MS is" lists of free software are a sad, pathetic display.

Oh Paul, what have you done?
Perhaps you should include a dictionary reference for the word 'irreverent' to assist some of your younger readers...
Anonymous User -April 04, 2005
Paul, I'll be sure to remember your comments. Even though market share isn't an accurate measure of userbase, Macs average around 3%. Forbes predicts a 2 point increase.
Longhorn is going to sell millions? Not a chance. People will have Longhorn simply because it comes on new computers, but even Gates is afraid people aren't going to buy new computers to run his new Windows (3ghz to run Windows? Christ). People are happy with XP. Longhorn's technologies are coming to XP. People don't need more than 1Ghz to check their e-mail or surf the web.
Every once in a while, Paul feels the need to post "haha" flamebait against people who enjoy using other operating systems. I don't know why. It's really annoying, though, when I'm just looking for some Windows news, not Windows propaganda. Most people already accept that Windows is not the best OS out there--it's just everywhere. You don't need to preach to me. I've already got a PC--and a new Mac mini.
Anonymous User -April 04, 2005
Have you Windows IT "pros" ever seen used a modern Mac running OS X? You obviously have no idea what you're talking about.
And speaking of prices, for the money you pay for 1 lousy copy of Windows XP I can get 3 (three) full Mac OS X versions. Not to mention the bundled software and its quality (compared to the crap bundled with Windows).
Anonymous User -April 04, 2005
Funny all these comments. Low on merit, high on flames.
I've used Windows since 3.1 to XP. Now I'm on OS X. What can I say is that while not ideal, certainly better OS than MS products. Why? Check yourself, there is Apple Store or local dealer nearby you and they don't eat people alive there.
Paul, I try to be pragmatic too; wherever I show up with my Apple laptop, everybody says: Oh, that's Apple? I'm considering to buy one too. All these comments come from diehard Windows guys. There must be a reason people look for alternatives. I'll not name them. Everybody has it's own list.
So better MS hurry with Longhorn release, because there might be shortly much lesser people to sell to. There is no need to be a OS war; eventually Roman empire just collapsed, not lost a war.
And yes, I like my overpriced, slow, toy computer.
Firing squad, don't bother to respond.
Anonymous User -April 05, 2005
>The main point that I think Paul allways maintains is that Apple should not ask people to pay so much for upgrades that really aren't that major.
The main point why Paul keeps bashing apple is not because he actually believes the things he writes, he just knows (t)his nonsense will generate hits on (t)his website of angry mac-fans.
Anonymous User -April 05, 2005
Pauls right in as much as it's not going to be an OS war in terms of sales. It's always been an OS war in terms of mind share and Apple has always won that one. Longhorn will be what most of Bill Gates' products have been, a knockoff of someone else's ideas. MS has done well by that approach and there is no reason to believe that'll change. What we can but hope is that the MS dominance wouldn't be quite as total and that the current trend to some reniewed OS diversity will continue.

Wow. This like an elementary school playground at recess. "MR. GIRLY CRAPPLEHEAD" this and "Windoze" that . . . I'm outta here. What a waste of time.
Anonymous User -April 05, 2005
I rate this article and all comments as "Laughable" at best. Some of you said Mac hardware was overpriced if I remember reading all the garbage posted(I just skimmed any comments with the word "CRAPPLE"). Some people would prefer to pay a premium for dependable hardware and good aesthetic value. I am not one of the many who have disposable income to buy G5's, Powerbooks/iBooks, and iPods because I have a very limited income. I found my current mac, a Power Mac G3 Beige, in a pawn shop for $200 and bought it the very same day by selling some personal items. Since then, it has a new case, big HD(120 GB), a Radeon 7000(flashed peecee card FYI), USB card, WiFi via a Motorola PCI adapter(OS X native despite it's non-Mac compatibility), and hefty amount of RAM. That shows to me my mac has limited customizability even though some vendors don't support any Apple hardware.
I will admit that some built-in features convinced me to upgrade certain parts but I now have a system that runs Mac OS 10.3.7 that is fast for my needs. Now to flame the Windows users.
The Windows OS itself - I believe version XP requires you to enter a unique number to activate it, yes? That means that anytime you wish to re-install Windows XP on the same computer(HD failure for example), a new activation code must be acquired. This is rather bothersome for some that constantly tweak their system and end up corrupting their OS in the process(video card drivers for example). This is non-existent on OS X last time I checked ;-)
Amount of Security applications - There are many choices for security applications for Windows XP.
•Firewall•
•Malware•
•Spyware•
•Optimization•
•Anti-Virus•
I would dare anyone to use a "virgin" Windows XP PC online for 10 minutes on a cable line. I would suspect it would get a virus guaranteed within those 10 minutes. Most of the more knowledgable PC users must have at least one app from the categories I mentioned above(not all Windows users are idiots - there are very smart people out there that run very healthy systems).
Hardware Choice - You have a veritable "All you can eat buffet" amount of options out there for PC systems. If not one manufacturer meets your needs, you can build your own system from the ground up with the hardware you like. Mac users don't have that option but in exchange for this, we can run a very stable OS without any extra drivers or insane configurations. The Windows OS has, no, MUST support a mind-staggering amount of hardware configurations out of the box. There are some peripherals that need specialized drivers and there is where stability is weakened for the OS and system. I would prefer to run a stable OS out-of-the-box for my mac than to be installing drivers/.dll's. "You work on the computer, not for it."
File Naming - Try to defend this one if you can :-) . You are happily working on your Windows computer until suddenly something goes wrong. It was running pefectly until a few minutes ago that you installed the new hardware testing app "X". Try to troubleshoot it by yourself without any prior knowledge of app "X". You are looking for the offending file(s) but you run close to having a heart attack try to identify the file(s) in your system's main directory. "What is exactly pgthdsr.dll? I don't know how, when, or what this file does." I guess calling customer support personnel "Haddad" for help must be interesting plus his family gets to eat for the call you made to him. Looks like your misfortune brings happiness to the poor man's family.
I am not biased to computer platform loyalty. I would like to have a PC system to run Linux though. I might even put Windows XP on it to see what makes it so popular amongst the masses. There are very few people in the world that have an open mind to new technologies and it is those people that see past everyone's opinions towards "brand loyalty". It is because of them that we have Linux and Mac OS X(Unix-based) today. People have their opinions and it is perfectly ok for them to express it here(even the ones that will troll my post). If everyone opened their mind to new computing options, they will see that the Windows World they know of is not the only option in the universe. I am not saying "Switch" but explore new computing horizons. Windows is not the be all-end all of OS and neither is OS X or Linux(any distro) because any one of them have strengths and weaknesses superior to the others. But if you don't explore, your opinions(and comments/articles alike) will have only one side and be biased.
:-)

ahem..
Tiger's not a big upgrade huh?
Okay.. let me know when you catch up with 2001 there buddy..
Expect many many laggers to be whining when Tiger comes out becuase all the 'not so high tech' features will be incorporated into new versions of Mac Apps, making Panther/Tiger REQUIRED. It's happened before, it'll happen again. Meanwhile MS is still kicking around Windows NT code.. and slaps a new coat of paint on every 4 years ...
Definitely check out Tige when it comes out.. play w it, etc.. it's really quite amazing.. 200 new features, was it?

It's been two years since I "fired" Bill Gates...and I have no regrets at all. It was two years ago that I moved to Linux. Red Hat at first but then I moved to what is now Novell/Suse. And I have no desire to go back.
Why not? Vulnerability. Stability. Ease of setup (for example, that little broadband installer CD I got for Windows from my ISP was totally unecessary for my Linux box...it sets up DHCP on its own, thankyou).
I've also heard arguments that Windows is cheaper to operate than Linux. By my experience, this is also wrong.
Is Linux all I run? No. I have also recently aquired an old PowerMac that my wife will be using for the internet. Why? Stability and less vulnerable.
Meanwhile, the service calls my business gets are invariably from Windows users with viruses, worms, adware, etc...as well as the ubiquitous "Illegal operation error". And yes, these people do have viral protection...as far as it goes.
It continually amazes me that commercial software such as Windows can be as it is while I sit here with an opensource OS that costs me so little (or nothing) yet works so well by comparison. No need for MS Office, OpenOffice is compatible and free...for Linux, Windows and Mac.
Why does Windows continue to get most of the market? Simple. Because it is continually shoved at the consumer, who has gone to Wal-Mart, Dell, or Gateway to get a PC. It's all they know. From my experience, if you sit down and show a customer the alternatives, they are invariably attracted to them...they are tired of Windows issues, but they think they have no alternative.
