Updated: A Flurry of Enterprise Spyware Solutions

Do you have a problem with spyware? As you know, spyware is that problematic type of software that gathers information or tracks system usage and reports that data to outside sources without the user's knowledge. Obviously, this sort of software can be a threat to your enterprise security. Spyware can be installed on systems through a variety of methods, including malicious ActiveX controls, Web-based scripts, file-download mechanisms, assorted email content, and software installation that appears legitimate.

Desktop- and gateway-based firewalls as well as content filtering systems can help detect and block spyware. For example, some desktop firewall solutions prevent unauthorized applications from communicating on the network. But they don't necessarily prevent spyware from becoming installed, nor do they stop it from collecting data.

Dozens of standalone desktop solutions identify and remove spyware. But managing standalone desktop software across an enterprise isn't exactly a simple chore, so these solutions aren't exactly ideal for businesses. If spyware is a problem on your network, you might consider using an enterprise antispyware solution--and by "enterprise," I mean a solution that offers its own centralized management system. Many people aren't aware that numerous enterprise antispyware solutions are either already available or will soon be released. At the URLs below, you'll find long lists of spyware packages, both standalone and enterprise.

I just kindly wanted to remind the author of the CSM Solution by webwasher, which I think is truly missing in this article to give a comprehensive overview. Please check it out at http:\\www.webwasher.com

GIANT company ( http://giantcompany.com) was bought out by Mircosoft. Microsoft will come out wiht its own anti-spyware solution next year.

Most of the appliance based anti-spyware solutions are relying on a major AV vendor to provide definitions (Sophos, Panda, etc). Anyone care to comment on the outlook of these guys expanding their definitions to match those of the best desktop agent vendors? Maybe they'll just buy them up...

Anonymous User -January 07, 2005

If only there was one Anti-spyware product that removed all spyware, instead of having to use two or mor products....

Anonymous User -January 12, 2005

Use a browser thats not IE and you solve 90% of spyware problems. Using firefox i get hardly any spyware anymore. Simple and cheap!!

Websense and Bluecoat are both enterprise options, I wonder why they weren't mentioned? They are pricey though

Anonymous User -February 24, 2005

If you were paying attention you would have seen Websense in the author's list of URLs.

MS/Giant AntiSpyware is borderline useless. I find it amusing the way it takes credit for "removing" the same 5 malware apps day after day... Wouldn't you think a tool of this nature ought to employ at least the tiniest bit of heuristics? How hard would it have been to verify that "removed" infections were truly gone, across several days of scans? Effectively all this tool does is put the user on a treadmill. The only sure way to remove that crap is to boot a PE disk, load the registry hives to temporary keys, and then remove the crap without any of it having a chance to execute. But does MS offer PE to consumers? Hell no! As usual their bottom line ans BS agenda are more important than the plight of the end-user... WAY more.

I totally agree with the user that says there is no single product that handles all spyware issues. I have tried Microsoft beta antispyware tool, aawsepersonal, spybot, used all sorts, each of them handling a set of problems and not all. and some times they identify one another as spyware also. Very funny observation

dynacomm iscan rocks

Great article. In fact, I recently read an article on Max Secure Spyware Detector Enterprise Edition(www.spywaredetector.net). The product is one of the fastest in scanning and very easy to use. It is also the lowest cost. About 50 % lower than leading brands. Try it. My boss is very happy I chose this product. Hopefully you can review it next time in your article.
