To get the handwriting tab you need either Microsoft Windows XP Home edition or Professional Edition, otherwise this tab will not appear in the window, sorry for the inconvinience

ok..here's my problem..I keep trying to install msn 7.0 and i keep getting the same damn error!! it reads: MSN Messenger setup has failed with error code: '1601'. Please go to the MSN Messenger Web site and download the software from there. Everytime i do that it still gives me the error. I can't even get MSN v.6.2 which i had and uninstalled thinking that that was the problem. I'm so disgruntled by this situation! anyway some help would be nice thanks!

I have windows xp home and the handwriting feature in msn. my advice is to install msn 7.0.0425 or eat it. and if that does not work, reinstall windows or steal an update cd from someone. but quit complaining about your woes. we get the point!

I know why people don't have the hand writting and it is because u need to download a program and a security uptade go to msn website and go the download msn messenger 7.0 page and go to the botton of that page and read what it says after u download those two things u can begin to use that hand writting

if that didn't work for some of u don't remove the two programs u downloaded just try to install msn messenger again and u r ready have fun

If you cannot handwrite... Download Journal Viewer here: http://download.microsoft.com/download/4/6/3/463ff4b8-a60a-4569-b3f1-a4c1ec784ff2/setup.exe Install it. Exit MSN V7, start it again. Open up a chat window and you should have a Type and Handwrite tab near the Send button. Simple.

Damn... this bout burnt out LMAO... my lady tried installing V.7.0 Beta on hers twice and will possibly have to format again now because will not even let her boot up in safe mode on windows xp... So look on the bright side things could be much worse. my lady lost all the things she had on her system... So I would consider the 1603 error more serious her errors started from that 1, and progressed to a crash so be thankful u can use ur pc, she doesn't even have the disks so she has to wait... OK, LISTEN UP!!! The problem with MSN 7 not having a handwriting tool is a glitch in Windows. The way Microsoft's IT Technicians fix this glitch is by going Start>Run then typing "cmd". Now simply enter "format c:". answer "yes" to any questions that appear, and sit back and relax as Windows sorts itself out.

go to the main download page of msn 7.0 beta. At the very bottom you will need do download both of those products, if the links dont work find the updates at microsoft.com

I know its not the version of computer because I had it but my computer stuffed up a bit and we had to get windows xp installed again, i then downloaded msn 7.0 again and this time there was no handwriting tool. I think it depends where you download it from too. The first one was from a different website and I think it may have been called (on the website) msn 7.0.0425 I just searched for it on google.com so do the same and see what results you get. Try downloading this one from a different site. I don't have it now and I came on here from google.com when i searched for msn handwriting tool. i had msn 7.0 and deleted it. UI tried getting msn 6.2 back, but i keep getting errror 1603. i went to start then run. i ran msiexec/unreg, the i did the same with msiexec/regserver and it didnt fix the problem.

to everyone who cant get msn 7 or cant do hand writing try this.... insert a boot disk in the floppy drive then reboot the computer. when the computer boots from the floppy type fdisk/mbr then enter. remove the floppy disk from the floppy drive then reboot the computer and problem solved!

that fdisk/mbr worked a treat, the handwriting tool works perfectly now. i was sceptical but it paid off, cheers

This forum was the biggest piece of $hit I've ever seen. I've lost my time reading stupid stuff that has nothing 2 do with comps. I still have that f***ing 1603 error and trust me, I've done everything. I've uninstalled Windows Messenger, and MSN Messenger 5 too. I've done the msiexec $hit, and it says something like "incorrect line commands". to use the handwrite.. you have to go into the help topics.. there is a link to download ' window journal viewer' and a security update for that.. after the download... .. reboot then the hand write feature will work

hmmm you people are a little IT unaware... well in order to use the hand writing option, you need to have the Windows Journal Viewer at this url: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=fad44098-8b73-4e06-96d4-d1eb70eacb44&displaylang=en and the minimum requirement for all features to be used in messenger 7 is a windows 2000 service pack 3 or higher... meaning windows 98 isnt fully compatible... in order to be safe that your windows journal viewer doesnt get attacked, there is also a security update... the bottom line is just update your whole windows at the windows update website to get all these things and more even if you dont want to use windows XP SP2 :)

another thing... if you cant download msn messenger 7 beta from the MSN messenger website, just go to any search engine and search msn messenger 7 beta or something and you can find lots of downloads of it... so you need not use all those profanities as words of expression....

Do a search on Microsoft.com to download and install Journal Reader. This adds the stuff MSN Messenger needs to be able to offer you handwriting features. In the meantime, the security flaw is no logner a security flaw as you are now strictly limited in the animations you can send... I think...

I used to have msn messenger 7.0 but it did't have the handwriting plug on with it, so i removed it and tryed to reinstall it. when the install was complete i click on it and an error saying "not compatible" came up. i have tryed changing the compatibility settings but there is not 1 for windows XP. i really want msn 7.0/beta but i cant get it. I've had 7.0 for a while now, but today it stopped working. I was actually using it earlier, but it kicked me off and now I can't sign back on. I was going to downgrade back to 6.2 but there was an error. Any suggestions on how I can use my messenger again?

every other day that i try to go on msn messenger.... i dont even no how long it takes to sign in because i'll come back an hour later after signing in... and it'll still be signing in so i just cancel... the one time i actually kept it going and it said that the service is temoporaritly unavailable... so i uninstalled it an i was gonna reinstall it... but now it won't even let me go 2 the page to install it again!! this sux ***

i dont know if this has been answered or not yet but the handwriting tool requires a plugin for messenger plus. In other words you must have messenger plus ( www.msgplus.net ) then goto the plugin page and d/l the handwrite plugin and restart messenger and quit ******* about the handwriting thing. lol i hope this helps //borne

Everytime i try to sign in on msn 6.2 it says i have to download the new version, but wenever i try to download it, it says i have an error 1601. i did searches on it, and tried to fix it, but it still wont work. How can i get the old msn back?

I flashed my computer and the screen went dead. I tried to boot from my hard disk and that wouldn't work either. I then waited for the floppy disk, but that didn't work. I think there is an I/O error. Can anyone help?

My daughter Elezebeth has been trying her hardest to get this handwriting tool. We have gone to every site that is listed and followed everybodies steps. Id really like it if someone would be a little more specific on how to get the handwriting tool so my daughter will stop complainging. OH wow its amazing ive gotten an email from the staff and it has made a great deal of difference. We have now figured it out thanks to jimmy. Jimmy gave me the most specific steps there is. Thank you so much my daughter thanks you so much. But i might not in a couple weeks when i figure out that shes staying up til at least midnight every night and missing school. Hello, my neice Danielle is staying at my house for a month as her parents are on a trip and she cannot miss school. However she is a computer freak as i am aswell. However neither one of us can figure out this. When I get it I do not have the option of hand-writing. Many people have given ideas but they have not seemed to work for me. Please someone, my neice and i are desperate. Nothing that we have tried has worked and she would like to get it on her computer. It worked just fine on mine but we are both always one the oomputer. therefore we each need our own messenger with the writing, this is a way she can keep in touch with her parents when the phone is not an option aswell as just talk with her classmates. WOW!!!!! I finaly go the the bottom of this page. I am one of those peeps that belive in reading all the info that has been posted in sites like this when I want to get a problem taken care of. I have just spent the past 2 days reading every post on this site, and it solved the problem. Problem I had: When I tryed installing Messenger I got this message. an error occurred during the installation of assembly microsoft.windows.networking.RtcRes, type="win32",version="5.2.3.3",publickeytoken="6595b64144ccf1df", processorArchitecture="x86"". Please refer to help and support for more information.HRESULT:0x80070002 Then it backed the instalation up and gave me this error 1603 Naturly I wanted to take care of the problem, and my searching brought me to this site. The answer to the problem is posted on this site, its just a shame that i had to speend 2 days reading post after post after post after post asking about the handwriting tool. Anybody who has read even a quarter of this site should be able to figure out that the question has been asked about how to get handwriting. What people need to do, is take the time to read the responses instead of just speeding to the bottom and adding yet another post asking the same questions. What makes me laugh, is that most of the time the answer to there question is just a few posts up, if thay would just look there problem would have been solved. If people would do that, than it would save a lot of time and get the problem fixed quicker. IN WINDOWS GO TO YOUR CONTROL PANAL AND SELECT ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS. ONCE THERE, SCROLE DOWN TOWARDS THE BOTTOM AND FIND A FILE CALLED "WIN-TOOLS" BY WEBSEARCH, REMOVE THAT PROGRAM. (DON'T WORRY, REMOVING IT WILL NOT CRASH YOUR SYSTEM, IT IS PART OF A USLESS TOOLBAR PACKAGE). THEN RESTART YOUR COMPUTER. WHEN I DID THIS, ALL I HAD TO DO IS GO TO MSN.COM AND DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL MESSENGER. WORKS WONDERFULLY. All I can do is hope somebody benefits from this post before it gets buried in the shear size of this site. The real kicker is that in all that reading, there isn't hardly any conversation about what the topic of this site actualy is. Microsoft says that there is a security problem with the winks. That people can send you bad files through that link. All i have to say about that is, this is a beta program, and by using it you agree to a certin amount of risk that the programers might have missed something. I am still going to use it, I'm just going to shut off the Winks, (there problem solved, now its not a risk) Thank you Microsoft for letting us know that the problem is there, and I am confidant that you will put this knowledge to good use and be able to fix it before it goes to the final version. As far as the handwriting tool, i am not going to waste my time typing out insructions when thay have been posted over and over again. Just scroll up and read how to get the windows journal viewer and patch. If that dosn't work for you than there is something wrong with your system and/or its old and it cant handle everything that messenger has to offer, and if thats the case, than you have got other things to worry about than besides able use handwriting in texts. Well, it's been real, but i must now go on to other things, (since I dont have any more problems) but I will check back here to see if this post has been helpfull (its big enough, so it should stand out in all this madness). Why doesn't MS just try to deliver a good application, instead of one with uber bells and whistles? God only knows they can't add power without adding vulnerability. Whatever happened to KISS? Mark my words, if they keep insisting on putting a lot of crap in their apps, instead of focusing on simplicity and security (in the other order) then sure enough, Linux/Unix will steal the brass ring right out from under their noses. XP, 2003, Office, Media Player, Outlook - they're all crap. Too many nice features...and stupid execution, code laden, bug laden, vulnerability laden ultra pigs. Just plain junk. LOL! This is to the user who made the comment about the "book" I wrote. How do you expect to get a problem solved if you dont spend time on it? I spent time, now I dont have a problem. And if people would take a second to read my "book" they wouldn't have a problem getting Messenger 7 with all features eather.

I've had MSN 7.0 for sometime now and have had no problems until resently. I'm having problems sending files to contacts and just today my winks will not work. I had to resort to msn 6.2 until the rest of the problems can be resolved with MSN 7.0

Now what exactly is happening here? I am not certain if the moderator exists here. For Handwriting required is MINIMUM Windows 2000 SP3 > .. which is Windows XP Home/ Pro. Win2k3. I have worked with MS Technical Desktop Platform support, and this is basically to resolve most of the problems. Please uninstall WIN_TOOLS from start -> control panel -> add/remove programs - [Win Tools] .. There is NO SOFTWARE called WINTOOLS from the MS Corporation. Its a SPYWARE. Please download and run the SPYBOT SEARCH & DESTROY program to clean your computer from unwanted spying programs. This can be downloaded at http://www.spybot.info/en/mirrors/index.html After this is done, please RESTART THE COMPUTER, then DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THE 2 files mentioned Anyways. the 3 steps to downloading and installing the HANDWRITING tool in MSN 7 are correct. 1> Download and install the Jornal viewer 2> Download and install the Security Update 3> Reboot Computer. I know this information should NOT be provided here, since this is originally a discussion for the vulnerability in the MSN 7 winks components of the previous BETA releases. But to omany people asking. And by following the above steps, the problem of the "Contact list double-clicking does not open the message window" error should also go away. I tried installing both MSN 7.0 Beta & MSN 6.2 but both failed. When I'm installing, this message appears: An error occurred during the installation of assembly component {874793FC-5F43-496A-8FE7-18C4DB9B143D} HRESULT: -2147024894. After that, rolling back action occurs & I am told that MSN Messenger was not installed due to error code 1603 & I should download the software from the MSN website. I already downloaded the software from messenger.msn.com but it still doesn't work. Also, I've tried every solution posted here but it still doesn't work too. I'm currently using windows xp. I'm using McAfee AntiSpyware & Norton Antivirus 2004. I used to have Lavasoft Ad-Aware but I've uninstalled it. I've tried disabling my antivirus & antispyware when downloading & installing MSN but it doesn't work too. PLEASE HELP!!

If you go to Add revome programs in your control panel and remove the file called Win-tools by web search you shouldnt have any problems getting messenger. It is spyware and causes a conflict with the registration of messenger.

I think it's being used for more than that. I opened up Messenger this morning and it started to send files randomly to other users on my contact list. Someone has figured out how to exploit this feature to send files to others without their knowing or consenting (winks don't require a consent click) thus spreading a virus. Very smart, but a pain in my ***.

For the handwrintg to work on MSN 7.0 Beta, u have to have, Windows XP either Version, (Home/Pro.) and keep it up-dated at all Times, if u'r running Windows XP, try updating the latest Graphics (Intel Chip Set) from Intel Downloads, I have 7.0 for 5 months now and not a single problem, hope this was helpfull

Anyway, here goes, for what it’s worth. Here’s how to do hand-writing on your computer. Sigh…. 1) Buy a pen, and make sure it’s one of those big black-tip PERMANENT marker ones. 2) Find your monitor. This is the square shaped thingy that usually sits behind your keyboard (where your fingers go) and displays pictures and things. 3) In big capital letters, write on the screen the words “DON’T EVER GO NEAR A COMPUTER AGAIN, YOU STUPID FU*KING MORON” 4) Read what you have just written on the screen 5) Obey it

Exit MSN V7, start it again. Open up a chat window and you should have a Type and Handwrite tab near the Send button. Simple. Ok, it works. This beta version of MSN Messenger have more problems than it seems. Major one: only P2P connections for audio-video? Not nice, personally I preffer to stay connected only at theire servers for this, why me to give more than it's needed.....I am curious if this will change in the final version. LOL Since I installed the Beta - (and promptly removed it) - my MSN can not log on - giving the .Net passenger... not workin...so sorry... 80072efd. I uninstalled beta 7 and rebooted, then put 6.2 back on - no problem with 1603 ( :- I must have the latest handwriting some how ;-) What happens if you do not have WinTools. (aaaghaha) I can not see it in my control panel add|remove programs. So I am stuck using WebMessenger. BTW all the other PC on my LAN can MSN so its not my fire wall\router. And I checked this PC and it definitely went Tits up after Beta 7 Camilla

Each of these things hapenned to me, in conjunction with loosing 90% of my Add/Remove list. I too, lost the Handwriting tab, AND lost the ability to even run it.. (Without disabling Norton Internet Security).(which at least leaves virus scan on).. Big Fubar.. This plus.. with whatever it did to me box, it won't let me downgrade back to 6.2.. It tells me that I have to remove 7.0 beta, but I can't.. It doesn't appear in my Ad/Remove list.. and I am not good enough to go anywhere editing the registry.. Yeow.. They all have the handwriting option you all just don't know where it is....There are two options at the bottom of the chat window, one has the "A" the other is the brush....Select that and you can write to your hearts content... Its kinda cheesy anyway, don't know why everyone is so excited about handwriting. Send a letter to your friends if ya want to write.... Type if you want to chat!!!

no probs with 70 here, except if i have norton internet security 2005 enabled, then i cannot access the msn game server, to play checkers, if i disable norton internet security 2005, then i can access the games server again.

For all those after Handwriting. You HAVE to have windows journal viewer installed on your computer! If you need it, look on the Microsoft website, its there, and its free. But unfortunatly, I belive its only for Win2k and XP, everyone with Win 98/ME is screwed to deal without it. Sorry. :(

here is a tip for you all , if you go to msn.com , you can download it there , the other half the battle is knowing how to set it up, there are pages through google that can help you do just that. seek and you shall find . lol. a lil joke , but true. Any way have fun all you msn usere.

Some times there are good reasons that you should save a good working setup for msn to disk, which is what i have done, as for the coment that people are idiots , well i dont belive that any one is an idiot , we all have to learn in our own time. that is how i look at it. but realy , saving your downloads to a folder , and later putting them on disk for future use is a great way to save it , you know it will work. that is how i do it , those that dont work , you dontt save. that is the best way .......
