How can I uninstall the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine (JVM) from Windows XP?

A. You might want to remove the Microsoft JVM, which Microsoft no longer supports, in favor of the more recent Sun Microsystems JVM. To remove the Microsoft JVM, perform the following steps:

  1. From the Start menu, select Run.
  2. Enter the command
    RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall
    to start the uninstall process
  3. Click Yes to the confirmation, then select Reboot.
  4. After the machine restarts, delete the following items:
    • the \%systemroot%\java folder
    • java.pnf from the \%systemroot%\inf folder
    • jview.exe and wjview.exe from the \%systemroot%\system32 folder
    • The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM registry subkey
    • The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM registry subkey (to remove the Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) options)

Microsoft Java is now removed. You can download Sun's newer JVM for Windows at http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html.

Followed procedure as outlined. Installed 1.4.1_02 SUN JVM and enabled for Netscape and Latest version of IE. When I go to a Web Page in IE with a Java Applet I still get a prompt to install Microsoft Java Virtual Machine and the Java Applet will not display even if I select OK. What is the problem?

Dan Haynes -March 12, 2003

It is a big mistake to uninstall microsoft java vm. Microsoft java vm is working a lot more efficiently than the Sun java vm. When I use Sun java vm I am not able to run web icq and when it runs, it uses 98%cpu on AMD XP 2400+ cpu! all the time etc. No wonder Sun is trying to stop microsoft, because microsoft java vm is working a lot better. I also have read on the mailing lists etc. that Sun java vm is causing problems at online gaming sites like yahoo etc. too. Just trouble...

Evren Yurtesen -August 10, 2003

This procedure seems to work for NT4, as well. But, it does not work for Win2k - any ideas on how to do that?

Brian T. Rowe -September 08, 2003

Is it necessary to uninstall the MJVM from Windows 98 SE? If so is the procedure the same.

Colin Lambert -September 29, 2003

You might try in IE going to Tools\Options, Advanced tab, find the Java (Sun) entry, and check the box "Use Java 2 v1.4.1 for (requires restart)". I would advise closing all browser windows before doing this, and do a full reboot after doing it, just to be safe.

Matthew Adams -October 02, 2003

Is removal process same for other versions of Windows like 9x/Me? Users operating other versions besides XP might also want to remove MS JavaVM, so why did author only specify XP? This is ambiguous and needs clarification or editor's note. Also, I was unable to find \%systemroot% file and others mentioned from Start/Search/(file name), how come? So, if I am using Win Me is the uninstall process the same, and how do I find the 'systemroot' files?

Dana Schwartz -October 04, 2003

When following your instructions above, step 4 says to delete items were to I go to remove those items? Thanks

steve -October 16, 2003

I am having a problem with a Trojan "thesten" that I believe MS java is allowing in. I am showing as having ver 5.0.3810.0 Should I update and if so how do I remove the existing version. Running Win ME

The information in #38206 looks like it might have been helpful - if only the popup ad wasn't plastered over the command text line I need. As the page stands, it's useless.

Kurt Colborn -October 19, 2003

Some applets are written in J++ and will require you to have microsoft jvm. Try the uninstall and reinstall with jvm 5.00.3805.

Great info! A few weeks ago I read it and considered making the change. It seems I should have done it then - as you now have a large ad displayed that covers up part of the command line to be run. Bad taste I can live with, but to render the content of the page useless is just plain BAD!!!!

Adrian Troalic -November 12, 2003

Thank you SO much, John Savill! I was constantly getting my browser Hi-Jacked by "Global Finder", and other nasty Spy Ware inducing websites and search engines. They were planting Trojans in my system, left and right! I looked around on the internet, and found that they were entering my system from (the no-longer-supported) Microsoft Java Virtual Machine. You have helped me get rid of JVM... Thank you so much!

The Dude -November 24, 2003

As M$ no longer service Microsoft JVM and therefore by logic, I assume that it is no longer required for all purposes, why should I replace it with Sun Microsystem's JVM? Or is there a necessity to have one of them installed for my computer to work correctly? Your Comment is requested,

Mike Werner -November 25, 2003

In my case I had the entire java sdk installed, I work with it see :-). So to enable the plugin to work go to Start >> Settings >> Control Panel >> Click the Java Plugin Icon. On the 'Basic' tab make sure the 'Enable Java Plugin' checkbox is checkd. Then click the 'Browser' tab, (this lets you choose which browser you would like the plugin to run) make sure the 'Microsoft Internet Explorer' checkbox is checked and you should be set. Hope it helps

Believe it or not, there's a giant AD for Athalon something on the page which has the link that you have to copy to remove MS Java. It covers the last part of the address, making it impossible to copy.

Big Bear -December 29, 2003

Since running your exe, I am now having all sorts of problems with java on websites. I cannot view previously viewable sites and some sites have entire sections missing. My own site is an example (http://www.g7vnr.freeserve.co.uk) this should have a java powered menu bar on the left hand side which I can longer see in IE6. Whilst your app did exactly what it said and removed the hijacking I am very concerned as to why I camnnot fix this problem. Any suggestions?

I do have Java VM in my computer, I checked to see that first. Then I tried to remove it with the instructions above but it would not remove it. I entered the command starting with RunD1132 etc and all I got was "Bad Command". I tried to enter it all with the spaces as shown above and then again with no spaces. I tried it with caps as shown and then with no caps. I enterd the command all as one line should I have entered sections of it separately? I am running windows 98 and I have down loaded all of the Critical Updates and that does not eliminate it. I believe I picked it up from a Real Estate Site where they were trying to build a mailing list because I also picked up other viruses from it. I have since told them about it and they confirmed that they had a few problems but no answers. What do I do next to get rid of the svchosts32 problem?

Help! I am looking to remove VM from my Win2000 machine. Can you provide similar instructions as you did for XP? Also, while I'm pressing my luck for the favor, can I ask another? My machine has somehow been infected with a bunch of crap --- pop ups, adware, etc... I've downloaded and run some programs to clean all of that up, so I think I'll be okay there, BUT...the one thing that continues to frustrate me, and I have NO IDEA what is causing it, is this: I'm running IE6.0 and it never fails that this thing constantly freezes up on me, for no apparent reason. It's frustrating. I mean, it's like every time I open a window or try to go to another site from the current window. Anyways, if you could direct me in any way, I'd appreciate it.

Dan: I'm not an expert at this, but I think you'll need to go to the Control Panels, run the panel for the latest Java plug-in version, select the Advanced tab, and choose from the list of runtime environment the one you want used. Hopefully that will do it. (You might also want to explore the other tabs -- could be informative). Good luck, Alastair Milne

I have Windows 2000 and also like many of the other comments I read have a trojan roaming my computer and continually changing my home page and linking itself up to every web address I put in my address barand adding itself on my Favorites list with names like Diazapam., Debt Reduction, Arizona Health Insurance and at least 10 other addresses which continue to link up to the trojan address...www.magicsearch.ws...I have read other suggestions about this problem and so far I have not been able to rid my machine of this problem...I read that it may be coming in through Microsoft Java VM but I can't even locate where to find it to uninstall it....I saw some others suggestions about this but they don't seem to relate to my particular situation...I would appreciate someone giving me the right answer so I can rid my copmputer of this malicious insidious trojan.....I too like someone else tried a solution from a "merjin" web-site but it did solve the situation...somebody somewhere must have the answer.....I await your reply...Penny K.

How can I uninstall Java VM from windows by following your instructions when they are partially obscured by an advertisement for intel pro. Surely it would be more appropriate to move that advertisement to another postion on your page... Cheers dave

Dave -February 18, 2004

How can I follow your instructions to uninstall JVM when part of those instructions on your page is obscured Cheers Dave

Dave -February 19, 2004

I have been trying to remove Coolwebsearch and all the associated problems, but it keeps reappearing. The CWShredder indicated some other things to do including removing Java Virtual Machine... I have tried the JVM removal in Windows XP, but on typing the command RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall my computer tells me RunD1132 cant be found. Can you help?

Simon Fathers -February 19, 2004

The Intel Advertisement is overlapping very important information as a result I am unable to read instructions for deleting a trojan virus. Indeed as in your document suggested the virus entered my PC by porn site which I was so stupid to show curiosity. Since long these porn sites bombing my PC without any request. These sites are mean vulgar and criminal.

John Sevestre from the Netherlands -February 20, 2004

Please explain more clear with 1.select Run and enter the command. What do you mean with enter the command? Do you mean the C:\prompt? or something else this is not clear to me. After I selct run and type RunDll32 nothing happens.

I tell what I think. It sucks I want to uninstall this jvm crap and I can't because you got a *&(*&)(& advertisment for Intel Pro covering up tha last letters of the command I need and I can't move it or get rid of it so I guess I am sh*t out of luck. Thanks for nothing and I hope Intel Pro puts you out of business because of crap like this. Good &^)*^)&^ day.

Steve -February 22, 2004

do not uninstall microsoft java unless you really need to and know what you are doing. If you play games on sites such as msn zone and pogo.com microsoft java is needed. I have just finished fixing a pc with Xp that the user was having problems on a few sites. The sun java is good but some sites require microsoft java. Also in Xp sun java cannot be made the default with ease. Many people find that on a reboot they have problems with some pages and quite a few game sites. If you have deleted microsoft java and want it back do a websearch for it. There are many sites that have the microsoft java download.

What do I do after removing Java, trying to install Sun's JVM at http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html and getting notified that "The server has not found anything matching the requested URI (Uniform Resource Identifier)"? Has that something to do with the actual removal of the old Java or is it just a contingent event (local server down or something)? I'm nervous, I edited the registry and now something is not working as it should, so please help me out!

No need to uninstall MSJVM. First downlaod sun java from http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html. When installed, after about 10 minutes, ensure the check box is ticked for Java (Sun) in internet explorer - tools - internet options - advanced. Then uncheck all the tabs from the settings in internet explorer - tools - internet options - advanced - Microsft VM.This should be just below Java (Sun). Then reboot and forget about it. Chas

C:\Windows\inf\ is a hidden folder by the way. In explorer change your settings in Tools, Folder Options, View: Hidden files and folders.

Hello everybody, it seems like everybody is having trouble finding the following folders/files: 1. the \%systemroot%\java folder 2. java.pnf from the \%systemroot%\inf folder 3. jview.exe and wjview.exe from the \%systemroot%\system32 folder This information I am about to give you might be useful: 1. %systemroot% simply means the path where the "WINDOWS" folder if located, I believe most people can locate the file under C:\WINDOWS, now simply look for the java folder and delete it 2. java.pnf can be located in the following path: C:\WINDOWS\inf now simply look for for the file called "java.pnf", DO NOT DELETE THE INF FOLDER!!!! 3. The system 32 folder can be located in the following path: C:\WINDOWS\system32, now look for the file called "jview.exe" and "wfview.exe" and delete those two DO NOT DELETE THE SYSTEM 32 FOLDER!!! As for the registry keys... well I do not know where they are located if i found where they are, I'll post it here. I use Windows XP Home Edition so the information listed above might not work for other OS. Please do not make me responsible for any damages this might cause to your computer, if you think this is bad information then please don't use it as I am not very experienced with computers and I am also 17... THANK YOU! :^)

Hello. My IE was hi-jacked too. My homepage always comes up as this Blank page, even after I manully set it to Yahoo. Anyway, downloaded the CWShredder, but like everyone else, am confused about the steps needed to remove Microsoft Java VM. Please email back with where I can find \%systemroot folders and the rest. Thanks!

Tina -April 07, 2004

*ATTENTION Win98 Users: I cannot verify this since I am not a tech expert, but I (like every other win98 user that has posted) have been unable to find a "java.inf" file. HOWEVER, windows98 hides all INF files in a hidden folder (c:\windows\inf). I looked for anything resembling the "java.inf" file and found "MSJAVA16.INF". Opening this file in Notepad reveals the title "Microsoft VM Installation". Also stumbling upon what that code actually does from another site might prove useful: "This tells RunDll32.exe to run the LaunchINFSection function in advpack.dll, giving it the file name (java.inf and the section to launch (UnInstall)." So THEORETICALLY, using the above code with "MSJAVA16.INF" instead of "Java.inf" might work. If this works please let me know so I can uninstall it myself. Also let me know if those registry keys are the correct keys for a WIN98 User. Thanks. Hope this helps.

Mister Spiffy -April 07, 2004

I do not have windows XP but 98se and I did do the first 3 steps, is this a problem? Also I have problems with step 4, don't know where I could find and delete these items. Could somebody help me?

Danae -April 07, 2004

Hi, I tried to remove the Ms VM but it gave a message that after removal IE will not be able to download anything from www, so I stopped. What is VM used for, should I be worried abt the message?

Saurabh -April 07, 2004

I am having the same problem as several people. That is i cannot find the java files to delete after rebooting. Although this question is posed by several others, it is never answered. Posting better instructions for the computer illiterate (myself) would be the best solution. Or if all else fails, please send me an e-mail. By the way, I run CW Shredder, Mcafee firewall,Mcafee antivirus, and Spybot everyday now and everyday I find unwanted crap on my comp any good suggestions for protection would be nice. Thanks

Wickwire -April 07, 2004

Your answer for removing JVM sucks, stinks, reeks to high heaven. How about explaining how the hell we, who are not freaking code writers or otherwise pc literat, are supposed to find the crap in step 4. Thanks for nothing :-( I think it is lame that there are a large number of the exact same complaint but nothing has been added to CLEAR IT UP!!!!

chuck k -April 08, 2004

Hello everyone! I recently had this problem with my computer but fixed it all up, and so I thought I would share with you who need help with computer litteracy how to remove JVM. The above information is correct, just so you all know, but it's difficult to find all the files. Here is a step by step instruction in deeper detail. Also, as far as I know this only works for Windows XP. I switched from a WIN 95 to XP, so I know hardly anything about 98/ME/2000. Sorry! :( - Click Start and select Run - In the "open" line, copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) this line: RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall - Start the uninstall process - Select YES and allow the computer to reboot - Once rebooted Click Start, and select Search - Under "What do you want to search?" select "all files and folders" - Copy and Paste java.pnf to search bar, and select Search. - If file is found, right-click and select Delete, then YES. (if no file appears, either the file is no longer a problem, or filename was entered wrong) - Select "Start a new search" - Copy and paste the file name jview.exe and select search - Delete all entries that appear - Start a new search and copy the filename wjview.exe and select search - Delete all entries that appear (the computer may not find any files and that is ok) - Close the search window. - Click Start, and select Run - Type in: regedit (This opens your system registry, ie, sensitive information. Only modify as noted. This is also a semi-complex process, so follow carefully) **Most files will be expanded..others are collapsed. This is shown by the + or - symbol next to each folder.** - Expand My Computer, expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, expand Microsoft, find Java VM, right-click the folder and select Delete. Select YES. - Expand My Computer, expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, expand SOFTWARE, expand Microsoft, expand Internet Explorer, expand AdvancedOptions, find JAVA_VM, right-click the folder, click Delete and select YES. - You may now close the system registry - You're set! Download the newer version from http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html Everything should be working again as it was before. Also, here is a handy trojan remover that helped me remove the CoolWebSearch trojan and scanned for others at the same time. This version may not be the newest, so after downloaded, unzip the file and run it. There should be an option for it to download latest version. Everyday I've looked for newer version and scanned my computer, and it has helped, so I suggest the same. But here's the sight: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html - Scrolls down until you see the title "More info on CWS", then select the sub-title "How do I get rid of this?" You will directed to link to download CWShredder. Hope your computer is running back to normal now. Have a nice day! :) -Jordan

Jordan -April 08, 2004

Where do I go to find the systemroot java folder and the others?

Eric -April 08, 2004

for the proper way to delete all the files in step 4, do the following: 1) to delete java.pnf a)click start b)click run c)type C:\WINDOWS\inf (this will open the inf folder and show all the programs in inf) scroll down until you find java.pnf d) DELETE it To delete jview.exe and wjview.exe do the following: 1) click start 2) click my computer 3) click on C: drive 4) click on the folder called Windows 5) click on system32 6) scroll down until you find jview 7) DELETE it 8) scroll down more until you find wjview 9) DELETE it *note: the jview icon will look like a program icon with a "j" blazoned over it...wjview will look like a program icon with "wj" blazoned over it To delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM registry subkey: 1) click start 2) click run 3) type regedit 4) click OK 5) scroll down on the left console until you see HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then click it 6) click software 7) click microsoft 8) find java vm, DELETE it To delete The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM registry subkey 1) click start 2) click run 3) type regedit (look familiar?) 4) click OK 5) scroll down the left console until you see HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE 6) click software 7) click microsoft 8) click internet explorer 9) click advanced options 10) look for JAVA_VM registry subkey, then DELETE it Now download sun java using this link: http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html. Don't forget to go to your recycle bin and delete all those programs that you worked so hard to find!!!!

I followed a link from CWShredder to your website regarding how to keep from getting re-infected. First of all, I have XP Pro, IE6, and Sun Java ver. 1.42_03 already installed. Under control panel-internet options-security tab, I have all the boxes under 'Microsoft VM' unchecked. I started to follow your directions but a dialog box came up saying, "If this component is uninstalled, Microsoft Internet Explorer will not be able to download files from the World Wide Web. Do you want to uninstall the Microsoft VM?" I am a heavy online gamer, who needs to constantly download updates, so obviously this is not acceptable. Please advise... is this statement true? I've also read all the preceeding comments, and would like advice as well on how to continue with the removal of the "additional items" when I get to that point as this seems to be a recurring question. Thank-you! Duane

Duane -April 10, 2004

Hi; ("you know" ) I see a lot of question & comments but no answers. what's up with that?

Bill -April 10, 2004

seems like there are lots of questions about how to follow step 4. i am not, by any standard, an expert on these topics but i think \%systemroot%\ means your windows system root directory (probably c:\windows). HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM registry subkey and other HKEY...etc are your registry stuff. so start your registry editor program (regedit.exe or others depending on your windows version) look for Hkey Local Machine and follow the sub-directories as directed in Step 4. delete the appropriate directories. hope this helps.

It showed up as Bloodhound and Nortons couldn't stop it. I ran a scan and then CWS. I went to delete Java and Received the WWW download threat. Can you please e-mail me the laymens procedures for removing this virus. I'm operating with XP Home Ed.

I have downloaded the shredder and run it. Now want to get right of the Java machine. Can't read the complete line of the first command, as it disappears behind a box of Top 20 viewed Articles. The rest of the article prints out without the right hand side of the instructions. I will also require the idiot's guide of where to put in what line of computer speak to get rid of it. Very much a bimbo when it comes to a foreign language like 'computer tech', sorry. A bit like my car really, I know how to drive it and feed it, I know a its powered by an engine, but wouldn't have a clue how to fix it! I would appreciate any direction you can give to help me get rid of the java machine and I shall be having words with my son about how it got on my computer!!!! Adult warz indeed! Many thanks Annie

I have run CWShredder and removed Coolwebsearch trojan. I then ran what you have done above. I have WinXP professional and SP1a installed. Java is not installed on this PC. My problem or question is, after I removed this garbage, which should be ILLEGAL in my opinion. I have noticed that this will attack my IE again and change it back. Even at times when I am not on my PC at like 2am or 3am!?!?! HOW DO I STOP THIS FROM CHANGING BACK AND CONTINUEING TO ATTACK MY IE!!?!??!

Max Southers -April 12, 2004

Very clear article on removing the MS VM. I ran through the steps without any problems, wishing to avoid any further "CoolWebSearch" infections. However, now I can no longer download files from the Internet. Are you aware of bugs in the SUN VM that limits file downloads? Worst case scenario, do you have instructions on restoring/re-installing the MS VM? Thanks.

I have uninstalled Java, now how do I go about finding these files I am supposed to remove. I used the windows search option to search files, but nothing "the same" came up. I would appreciate any info you have regarding this matter. Thanks again.

Missy -April 13, 2004

to answer a couple of the questions above: the system root is on your drive where all the windows (and other) programs are located most probably your 'C' drive. so go to 'start', then chose 'run' and type 'explorer' then click on my computer. the root is the first letter labelled 'SYSTEM'. click on that and then click on the folder named 'windows' you're now in the systemroot! secondly the subkeys can be found by clicking 'start' then 'run' and then by typing in 'regedit'. now this is a very serious program and if you delete the wrong thing you may damage your operating system permanently. so be carefull!

spencer -April 13, 2004

You have a box covering the rest of what to launch in Rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchNSF?? So I cannot see what to do next! I am running WinMe, the worst Microsoft prog Yet. Help

AP -April 13, 2004

You should remove this article because it causes the following problem: you are no longer able to download ANYTHING via the IE browser. When you click to download a file, instead of the save dialog, a browser error occurs. The value in the Address textbox is http:///. I had do a full re-install of XP to get this functionality back. Using sfc did not work, and neither did forcing a re-install of just the Explorer part worked.

David Foard -April 13, 2004

i removed microsoft JVM. Now how do I delete the following items: the \%systemroot%\java folder java.pnf from the \%systemroot%\inf folder jview.exe and wjview.exe from the \%systemroot%\system32 folder The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM registry subkey The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM registry subkey (to remove the Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) options)

please explain (same question that 80% readers had): After the machine restarts, delete the following items: the \%systemroot%\java folder java.pnf from the \%systemroot%\inf folder jview.exe and wjview.exe from the \%systemroot%\system32 folder The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM registry subkey The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM registry subkey (to remove the Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) options)

Following the instructions above, I went to the start menu. When I got to the Start menu, hit run, and pasted in RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection I got a message that says: syntax: rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection , The web page offers no information for this message. So, what to do?

Todd -April 14, 2004

Like others listed here, I have been hi-jacked. I downloaded CWShredder and ran it, but I still get pulled into the other search sights. When I type in the command listed above into my RUN text block and click "OK" it just disappears, nothing happens. Is the hi-jacker blocking the running of this command or is there an updated version? I ran another command listed from Microsoft that seemed to indicate the VM was there, I just cannot seem to find a way to get rid of it.

Charles -April 14, 2004

It took me a while to figure this one out, but finally did. The "%systemroot%" is your main drive. Most of you here will be using C:\ as your main drive. That's where the Java Folder is found. The "java.pnf" will be in your C:\Windows\INF folder, and the "jview.exe and wjview.exe" are in your C:\Windows\System32 folder. As for the "The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" entries, they are in your Regedit. Start > Run > type in Regedit and hit OK. For those of you who can't read all of the "RunDll32" command, here's the whole thing: "RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstal". Just copy and paste it in without the quotation marks. Hope this helps everyone who's had a problem deleting those files. Mel

Mel -April 15, 2004

Okey Dokey...I uninstalled MS JVM per instructions 1&2...I found the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM folder and deleted that; I found the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet, etc. folder and I deleted that. I was able to download Sun's newer JVM for Windows. However, before downloading teh Sun JVM, I tried searching for the %systemroo%\java folder, as well as the inf. folder and then jview.exe and wjview.exe from the system 32 folder. Nada. What I was presented with was a bunch of file folders with no idea where to begin. I have Windows XP, and so far I've been on IE without a problem. Do I really need to get rid of the %systemroot% stuff to prevent the problem I was having from happening again?

P. Taylor -April 15, 2004

step 4: goto c:\windows\system32 and delete the \%systemroot%\java folder after goto the c:\windows\inf directory and delete the file java.pnf 5 then delete jview.exe and wjview.exe from the \%systemroot%\system32 folder 6 goto start menu then press run then type regedit then go to edit then to search and then search for The (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM) registry subkey, (\%systemroot%\java), and The (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM) registry subkey (to remove the Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) options) I am currently on a pc with Windows Xp... I hope this helps some of you in your quest...

Brandon DePlaunty -April 15, 2004

ap -April 19, 2004

Richard, CWshredder is a great program but it does have it's flaws. Make sure you update it first, and have no IE windows open whilst you are running it (including the window you opened the program from). Also, it only really works for Cool Search hijackers, not other things like Look2Me, or ISTbar. Go back to Merjins website and download Hijackthis.exe . Read ALL the instructions carefully, and do NOT delete anything unless you back your registry up first, and have spoken to experts. Follow the links through Merjins website to get to some great forums run by real experts.

For those wondering how to uninstall the items under \%systemroot%\ etc. All that is talking about is the main folder on your computer. For example, C:\WINDOWS. for step four, enter C:\WINDOWS\JAVA and so on for each step. as far as the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM, i dont have a clue how to get that

I also noticed that a lot of other people also submitted the same questions, but I didn't find the answers on your pages. Any possibility of putting up a FAQ? It'd help us get the answers quicker & also lighten your work load. Thanks again for your help!

bryan p. -May 01, 2004

I did this for Win2k a few weeks ago, and I am appalled that after all this time John Savill hasn't answered how to fix what happens when you take the MSJVM out. You get a warning that your downloads from IE6 will not work, then you find out that Sun's JM doesnt provide a replacement function. You'll further find that re-installing the MSVJM won't fix it either - I even ran a repair over Windows, and un / re-installed IE6 - NOTHING short of wiping your hard drive and reinstalling Windows will make that functionality come back! (Left clicking on a downloadable link of button produces nothing, or a blank explorer page). I think this is the author's fault, an am insulted that he obviously feels unmoved to find a fix for it. Here we are trying to help each other, but the guy with all the resources - and the one who started thiss in the first place, is just sitting there doing nothing - evidently satisfied that he began all this mess! HE of all people should be answering questions and solving problems about his "fix".

Bruce Baxter -May 01, 2004

I see a whole string of queries regarding step 4. I also am stumped here. Please could you offer explicit guidance as to how these files should be accessed and then deleted.

Leigh Jackson -May 01, 2004

Step 2 didn't work, message said "java.inf not found", so I didn't need Step 3. In Step 4 = Delete the following items: the \%systemroot%\java folder, java.pnf from the \%systemroot%\inf folder, jview.exe and wjview.exe from the \%systemroot%\system32 folder I get a message telling me that \C:Windows\ is not a valid entry. Still in Step 4, Delete The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM registry subkey and Delete The The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM registry subkey (to remove the Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) options) those subkeys and entries were not in the indicated HKEYs. Is it possible it's because I already have the newer JVM for Windows installed? Directions like "delete item .... from the %systemroot% which is Windows are confusing. No wonder you've gotten so many questions about these directions.

To Dave who posted December 30, 2003 I can see your Java bar on the left side of your web site http://www.g7vnr.freeserve.co.uk What I can't see is the link under your 2 awards that takes me to wunderground.com. Dan -May 05, 2004

To the confused.. the reason why you cannot see these files in steps 4 is because they are hidden, enable all the files to be shown and you will see all of this within the Windows folder. They will all show up once you enable all the files to be viewed.

I would like to be contacted as I have completed the first part of removal, but step number 4 of your process needs to detail where a nonversed person such as myself can even go to find those files for deletion. "Search" produces no results of value. I would appreciate an email followup, if possible

I need help finding the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM registry subkeys. and im also a little worried about the message i get before i uninstall it that says "If Component is uninstalled microsoft internet exploere will not be able to download from the www do you want to uninstall microsoft v/m ?". Is this normal ? I'm using windows xp thank you for any help you can give me

loren walstrom -May 09, 2004

Those unfamiliar with %systemroot% variable, Registry backup and key editing, etc. should perhaps avoid risky fixes and try in Internet Explorer clicking Tools menu, Internet Options dropdown item, Advanced tab, and then uncheck the Microsoft VM items. Sun's Java can be obtained at http://java.sun.com

Max Anderson -May 11, 2004

I have Windows ME. A link on CW Shredder took me here. I followed steps 1 thru 3 above to remove Microsoft JVM, but am puzzled as to where to go to delete the items listed in step 4. How in Explorer do I find \%systemroot folders or The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM registry subkeys in order to delete them. I'm a novice. Thanks for any help.

How can I uninstall the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine (JVM) from Windows 2000? Please help if you can. Thanks

Chris Laney -May 13, 2004

FOR NOVICE PEOPLE: I give you these useful infos: 1- The \%systemroot%\ folder is the folder where your OS is installed ( generally C:\Windows\ ). 2 - To delete the keys "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE......." you must enter the register editor by typing "regedit" in the Execute field of your Start menu. WARNING !!! Be extremely careful when you delete keys, subkeys or values. You touch the heart of your computer... Good Luck !

Windows XP Professional, SP1. I have two comments. First, I had trouble installing the JVM from the Sun site, getting error 1305 (File not found on the website). Turns out it was caused by InstallShield. The workaround is to download the JVM and install manually. If I had uninstalled the Microsoft JVM first, according to your instructions, and then tried installing directly from the Sun website, I would have been in a big trouble, as I would not be able to download anymore. Therefore, I think the order of events needs to be changed. One has first to download the executable, just in case, and ony then go through the steps you outlined. Second, I see many comments addressing the same issues over and over (JVM for Windows 98, missing java.inf, etc.) It would be great if you put the answers to the most frequent questions directly below your instructions. It will save both you and the readers tons of time.

About 6 months ago I downlaoded and installed Sun Java. I didn't uninstall the Microsoft VM first, but it doesn't seem to be necessary. Sun Java changed all the requisite IE settings for me on installation and everything has worked fine since then. Although Microsoft VM is still on the hard drive it's no longer used by IE.

I'm using XP home edition I did not start with uninstalling but installed the new Java plug-in control (used your link) http://java.com/en/index.jsp I had no problems with coolwebsite other than that the scanning programm XOFTSPY (Paretologic) giving the registry entries coolwebsearch and cws.Oslogo i clear them but they keep coming back. Norton , Adaware and Spybot do not come-up with those registry-entries ? I have all servicepacks and MS-updates installed. I use also Spywareblaster and should be full protected but when I found those registry-entries and I check on Spywareblaster there are two restricted sites disabled xxxtoolbar.com and coolwebsearch(233)(i did not do that myself)In IE they are also disabled. Anyway i found out that that you can through "control Panel"find javaplug-in control and just change from default too the newest java. There is I think no need to uninstall the old java. I wait and see if those register-entries are coming back ? I also read that MS keeps supporting the old java for a while (ending 2007 or so) Greetings and what ever you do make a back-up first. In general i would like to see not only questions on this site but also answers.

That hadn't been the case all the months or even years before. Now I had to uninstall Java Sun ago in order to keep up my internet work. I wonder if there is an interferrance between Java Sun and the Microsoft JVM. PLUS: May it be that the latest Java Sun version does not run on windows xp without the sp 1? Please help. Marjon -June 08, 2004

Great article. Things are going good on the XP machines. I understand these steps should work for all windows versions. Is this correct? Also, Windows NT, I cannot find the jview and wjview files, are they named something else? If I skip that step, continue on with deleting the registry keys, then install the Sun JVM, I encounter install error telling me that there is a problem with the windows installer package and a program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Is that because the jview and wjview files were not deleted?

lookiing through this I can see I am not the only dope, obviously we all should go and and get some sort of firewall and anti-virus as a first step to prevent re-infection. Some software freebies I have found to be useful are, and I make no claim that they are the best but they are freely downloadable and seem to work in the main. The Java thing was something I didn't know and I will be seeking a win 2000 version of removal asap. Hijackthis cwshredder adaware (lavasoft) spybot search and destroy starter by codestuff (nothing to with removal but does speed up your machine a bit) Other pest control softwares help but don't remove all pests until fully licenced

Like others have noted above in their comments above to your FAQs, I followed steps 1 thru 3 above to remove Microsoft JVM, but am puzzled as to where to go to delete the items listed in step 4. How in Explorer do I find \%systemroot folders or The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM registry subkeys in order to delete them. I'm a novice. Thanks for any help.

i agree with marcus, at step 4, all info is lost since there is no step by step on where to find those files. Why do u all think we can read ur minds? please, write step by step instructions oh i finally found them, the first 2, i had to do a search , start, search, files folders. found them also using windows explorer, under bootdrive\windows\..... the second set i found doing this, start, run, regedit and then looked for what is listed on his list.

Bama -June 18, 2004

%systemroot% is a system variable, to see what the actual folder is open a command prompt and type "echo %systemroot%" (without the quotes). It is most likely C:\Windows but might be C:\WinNT or something else. To remove the registry subkey settings open run and type regedit, then find those subkeys and delete them.

Thanks for help thus far, but how do I do this for Windows 2000? I get the same problem others have, but haven't found your response to: "I know I have the JVM installed and when I run the specified command I receive the following error "java.inf not found" which make the article useless" Is there a way of removing it manually, safely?

Katya -June 20, 2004

I have Windows XP Professional and Sun Java JRE 1.4.2 I used Microsoft's unmsjvm tool, no longer distributed by Microsoft, but you can download it from ftp://cyberia.dnsalias.com/pub/filebase/windows/apps/tools/UNMSJVM.EXE It is known issue that unmsjvm breaks Internet Explorer applet tag support. I found the folowing solution: run regedit and goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608500} and delete value KeyFileName = "C:\\WINDOWS\\System32\\msjava.dll" Now applet tag in IE works again (at least on my system). Can anyone confirm this please?

Digitale -June 20, 2004

First, it should be noted, that fixes like these should really only be handled by someone with decent computer knowledge. It's very easy to mess up your whole computer by doing something stupid in your registry. I found this article via CWShredder, because i kept on having coolsearch reappear even after ridding my computer of it several times. Here's the answer to some of your questions: \%systemroot%\ refers to the folder in which Windows is installed. In other words, c:\windows. Why they say it like that when this fix is for winXP only, i'm not sure, but i guess in case someone installed it differently, they wanted to be safe, not thinking it would confuse most people. Thus, the first thing states for you to delete the "java" folder inside the windows directory. "The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM registry subkey " - whenever you see some tag like this (hklm), that's in the registry. To enter your registry, go to Start Menu-Run and type in "regedit" (minus the quotation marks). Then go to the location it states. Each slash represents a new "folder", just as it does normally. Then right click on the appropriate folder and choose delete. REMEMBER, the registry is critical to Windows' operation, so make sure you know exactly what you're doing. I did the fix a minute ago, so i don't know if it works...i guess i'll know in 3 days if i don't receive anymore malware crap. Hope my short little "guide" helps some of you out.

This forum is redicioules cause nobody answers to questions... it looks like this instruction only works for XP. Leave IE and download a good browser like Firefox or Opera and u wont have these problems. There is even a "byte"-verifier patch out from MS to solve these startpage problems. i downloaded it for 2000 pro and of course?!?! =) it didnt work.... so i just leave IE to all those that like pain and suffer and rather use a good browser =) in the meantime u guys try to get rid of JVM ;) LMAO

2 Problems with this solution for me: 1 is that I can't execute rundll32.exe (Access denied error, which also is blocking access to my Control Panel); I can circumvent that by copying a rundll32.exe to another folder and run it there. Second problem is that java.inf can not be found. I'm stuck here; what do I do? (And any ideas on the Access Denied problem?)

Carmen -June 27, 2004

Thank you very much John Savill! I was completely lost until I clicked the "How to uninstall JVM" button which can be found in the CWShredder, the software I used to destroy the harmful spyfiles with. For those wondering how to delete those specific things: You are not supposed to find any "\%systemroot%\" directories. It is supposed to mean your operating system directory, for example, if you´re using Windows XP, the place to find those things is usually C:\Windows\Java and so on. On how to get to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE stuff: Find a program called Reged and run it. Those registry subkeys are pretty easy to delete. Reged can be found by using the Windows search program. I just don´t know why such an expensive program like Norton antivirus is completely useless in situations like this. What are they getting paid for? Thanks for your help! Your procedure worked perfectly on all my Win 2k boxes. Hopefully no more trojans can sneak in now! To all you people who don't know whay %systemroot% is or don't understand the instructions, GET SOMEONE WHO DOES, DON'T BE A FOOL AND MESS UP YOUR COMPUTER FOR GOOD! (%systemroot% is one of c:\windows, c:\winnt, etc, HKEY_LOCALMACHINE is in the registry, you need to run regedit to delete the keys - WARNING - deleting the wrong thing(s) in the registry can break windows irretrivably requiring you to reinstall windows completely - you have been warned! :)

<< Just be careful uninstalling the MS JVM >> In Windows OS versions prior to win2k (sp2?) the msjava.dll file is a protected OS component (search the MS knowledge base for the following: "kbinfo KB222193"). The file itself should NOT be deleted in versions prior to win2k sp2 Also, make note that with many versions of Internet Explorer, the Sun JRE uses the same registered clsid. If you remove this registry entry, you will most likely not be able to use the Sun JRE either. Finally, if you do a search on uninstalling MS JVM you will find an abundance of articles relating to removing the MS JVM from WIN XP. Things are a bit more complicated in attempting to uninstall protected OS components for the reasons given above.

Hi, i have done every single thing it said to do except for: "jview.exe and wjview.exe from the \%systemroot%\system32 folder" i look in the system32 folder and i was unable to find jview.exe and wjview.exe files to be able to delete them and now everytime i restart it tells me to uninstall the files associated with it or reinstall it. i need help. i also have already instaled the Sun's JVM.

cono -July 03, 2004

To find and delete the Java folder, java.pnf, jview.exe, and wjview.exe, go to start, run, type in regedit and starting at the top find HKey---then subfolder Microsoft, and so on until you find the JavaVM files to be deleted. To find the appropriate sub directory JavaVM click on the small x to the side of the main directory. this opens up all of the subs. Example. Find Microsoft, click on the x to the left, then find sub Internet Explorer, click on the x to the left, find advanced options, click on the x to the left, find JavaVM and delete. for the prior system root, (also go to run, type in java, find and delete, find inf folder, delete, find java.pnf and delete, and Jview.exe, and delete. I take no responsiblility for giving this info, its just info. and thanks to the help of my son and his knowledge this has worked for me.

I've completed all of the removal steps, except for the last two. I don't know which registry subkey(s) to delete, the two registry entries you mentioned each have several subkeys. I really don't want to delete the wrong ones and mess up my computer or internet, any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! : )

J.H -July 09, 2004

@ J.H.: That depends on what trojan you have on your system. Tools like adaware help in some cases, but unfortunately not always. Try http://www.trojaner-info.de/anleitungen/hijackthis/about_blank.html (sorry, in german). If you have the trojan "cool web search", there you find a tool to get rid of it. There are more links to cleaner-programs, which you can try. good luck, okoch

Is it necessary to remove Java MS from Windows ME2000,. If so how to proceed? Tanks for fast answer

Gerard CV -July 27, 2004

There is easy way to uninstall microsoft java virtual machine completly, just use Microsoft's unmsjvm tool Uninstaller is no longer distributed by Microsoft, but you can download it from http://jlpz.free.fr/msn/misc/unmsjvm.exe See uninstall.log http://google.fi/groups?threadm=p90hd095qmrr56ipnaq7mkf0rr77r9chpj@4ax.com It is known issue that unmsjvm breaks Internet Explorer's applet tag support, but this is not problem anymore since Sun Java 1.4.2_05 fixes the problem during installation.

MS JAVA VM Removal / REINSTALL The W2K server SP2 was IE 5.5 SP2 was upgraded to Internet Explorer 6.0 SP1 Now there where some problem's, !!! not suprised !! Microsoft Java didn't work anymore, and sun java was not a solution because the intranet was build on M$ Java. So The server was upgraded to SP4 ?. Did not bring the solution. Also the file explorer had a grey left pane, this was because of : HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{EFA24E64-B078-11d0-89E4-00C04FC9E26E}\InProcServer32 à IE5.5 uses Browseui.dll -> All other IE use Shdocvw.dll I am running Windows 2000 Server SP 4 with citrix and did the following: - deinstalled all sun java's, You will have to check if java is installed, you can do this : START -> RUN -> CMD (enter) -> jview , if you get an aswer it is installed. The following commando wil do an uninstall. The deinstall did not work at first on my server because the java.inf file was missing. you can steal this from an other machine and put it in %systemroot%\inf . - RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall (manual removal of ms java vm) After you did the deinstall you need to do a reboot, because some files are locked. remove the \%systemroot%\java folder java.pnf from the \%systemroot%\inf folder jview.exe and wjview.exe from the \%systemroot%\system32 folder The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM registry subkey The HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM registry subkey (to remove the Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) options) Microsoft Java is now deinstalled. Because I Run SP4 on my W2K machine The java installation package could not install telling me that I needed to downgrade or whatever? So I needed to do a force install with no check. Download your specific msjava install at: http://www.infocellar.com/java/fix-your-java.htm Go to START --> RUN , and run the following command (probebly you have a different Directory for c:\downloads and you'll have to include the quotes.) "C:\downloads\msjavx86.exe" "/c:javatrig.exe /L /exe_install /nowincheck" I think you can do this also on other machines. After this you need to upgrade to MS JAVA VM 3810 links are on http://www.infocellar.com/java/fix-your-java.htm

I noticed some people were having trouble running "RunD1132". This is for those who got the error message that RunDll32 might have been mistyped. The problem is that the 2 characters that look like the number "1" are really supposed to be the lowercase letter "l", which looks exactly the same in the typeface being used in the instructions.

For those who don't know. %systemroot% refers to c:\windows (replace c by the letter of the drive where windows is installed). To remove the registry keys, click start, then run, type regedit and click ok. Navigate to the keys and delete them.

Anonymous User -October 20, 2004

Wow ... I can't believe that someone would offer advice to have people go into their registry and start deleting keys, did it ever occur to the author that non tech types might read this post and try to follow the directions? Should have at least posted a warning with it ... damn shame. The frustration level of some of these posts is understandable. I have left MJVM on my machine (win xp w/sp2) but run Sun's version and have had no issues, I do however run a software firewall, antivirus, ad-aware, spyware blaster, spybot w/ tea timer ... and update them all regularly ... what I don't do is go to crap websites looking for "free" downloads ... a little insulation and better surfing habits will keep half of these problems from getting into your system. Good luck to all of you that have been left "in the wind"

Dear Annonymous 10/21/04, I agree that this advice is terrible. I repair PC's & I'm stumped with a winxp java problem right now. I thought I might find a solution here. Most of the posts on this page are folks who do not understand how to get into the registry. I think it is very irresponsible of the author to even suggest it to them and as numerous as these posts are I see no responses. Dear Newbies, Once you get your 'puters cleaned up and running go get a free Zone Alarm, WinPatrol and Spybot. Dear Author, Shame on you! -SunsHlneGrrl

How come the MSVM is like 100 times faster than its Sun Counterpart? Not only is the download smaller too, like 11 mb. I think Microsoft should disregard its legal agreement with Sun and keep updating it. I still use the MSVN, mainly because the overhead is so smaller.

I had the same problem. The command doesn't work because java.inf not found. I ran Windows Update to install the following patch: 816093: Security Update Microsoft Virtual Machine (Microsoft VM) Restarted my computer and I typed the command (RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall) once more. It works. I got a message "If this component is uninstalled, Microsoft Internet Explorer will not be able to download files from the world wide web. Do you want to remove Microsoft VM?" Weird thing is I still can't find java.inf anywhere in my C drive.

Anonymous User -December 06, 2004

To anonymous user 10/21/04 and 11/28/04, there's nothing wrong with the advice. Those who don't know anything about computers (non techies) shouldn't even think about "fixing" their PC. If they do, it's their problem. They'll break something with or without the above MS Java VM removal instruction anyway.

Anonymous User -December 09, 2004

Peeps should know that with XP SP1a or later, it is no longer included.... There is only a folder remaining, which cannot hurt. Older versions of Windows (w2k, NT4.0, ME, 98SE 98 etc) You should've moved to the new XP SP2 I'd guess... In addition, the posted solution is about protecting your computer to the "ByteVerify" leak of M$ VJM. For removal or general protection, please use programs like "Ad-Aware", "Spybot Search & Destroy" and "SpySweeper" to remove them, and spend some time investigating which programs to use for protection of your computer. read: http://spywarewarrior.com/asw-test-guide.htm good links: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/ http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/pest/ http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ http://www.safer-networking.org (for spybot) http://www.webroot.com (for spysweeper) In Answer to a lot of questions: if the locations specifiers don't tell you anything, you're not skilled enough to know what you're doing in the apps required to reach those locations and remove the correct items. As such, the author deliberatly used language which make sense for Computer Engineers, but not to the ordinary users. I Rate this article an 2 for the reason that it is correct, but not maintained for present day. And for reason that the general user has no use for it (the target for the article) Either an tool (executable or bat/cmd file could be created to perform the removal actions described, including a detection if it is installed. Downloading & Installing Sun Java, should be no problem for the average user, except mayby some tips for installation.

I can't believe all these post trying to get rid of a good tool. MSVM is great, it is like any tool though, not used properly it will cause damage. Instead of calling MSVM crap, I suggest you first learn what you should be doing and quit doing what you shouldn't be doing. My computer stays on 24 hours a day 7 days a week 356 days a year (weather permitting) I run MSVM with zero problem, I also run ada-ware, spybot, Avg, spamfighter etc. I don't go looking for free stuff, I get free stuff though when I stubble onto it on a reputable site. The very first thing to do is educate yourself and if you connect to the internet with just one computer and are using broadband then put yourself behind a router. try to get up to speed by upgrading to winxp sp2. Always be suspicious and alert. You wouldn't walk down a dark ally in the bad part of town without being cautious so be the same way on the net. By being vigilant you can keep your computer on the net 24/7 and stay clean. I have the proof, I use logging and when I see a weakness I attack it then. The most important thing to remember is "you chose to use it it is up to you not to abuse it" the world is not your gaurdian. MJ Texas MCSE+S

Anonymous User -January 15, 2005

MS JVM is obsolete but not crap. The previous comment was written by me. However, Sun Java is the most updated version as Sun is allowed to make changes to Java. However, Microsoft would be doing so illegally. And more problems such as the CWS problem of versions <3810 could arise. There would be no more updates now.

Anonymous User -January 15, 2005

Still the guy who wrote the previous comment. Not every thing has a patch. Just like Windows NT 4.0, it does not have any more updates so people are advised to upgrade to Windows XP. Upgrade to Sun Java. It's free and most people (most, not all) have no problems. And some CWS variants install through ActiveX controls now so use Firefox too...

If you have win 98, PUT IT BACK ON YOUR SYSTEM, run ZONE ALARM and NORTON and you will not have to worry about trojans, about blank exploits, etc .. and all java sites will work well again! With my new system, win xp, and the SP2 and SUN JAVA installed, everything is constantly locking up ( in java sites ), and will eat memory if you don't notice a "lockup", and is totally frustrating. I have tried everything = there is no way to counter this problem if you are using sites that use java.

I've found it possible to make the sun java plugin happily override the MS Java VM under Win98SE alieviating the need to pull the system apart, it also means that you can use the sun java plugin control panel applet to switch off the IE plugin and use the MS Java VM when the web based applet finds Suns Java VM too unfriendly. I see no reason why the same technique would not work under XP and IE 6+

%systemroot% for Windows 2000 C:\WINNT\ and for Windows XP C:\Windows Therefore look in the location: C:\WINNT\Java for Windows 2000 C:\Windows\Java for Windows XP The other files to remove are located in the registry. Go Start then Run and type REGEDIT and click down to the correct locations.

Anonymous User -March 29, 2005

My advice, SKIP THE FIRST STEP (RunDll32 ... command), at least if you have any intention of ever using Internet Explorer to run applets again. Microsoft's no-longer-available MSJVM Removal Tool was withdrawn because of a serious bug - it destroyed IE's ability to run applets, even when Sun's Java is installed. And if you execute the suggested Rundll32 command, it will screw up IE in the same way! After skipping the RunDll32 command, it's safe to follow the other instructions (everything after the suggested Reboot). While this doesn't completely remove the MSJVM, it disables it, which ought to be enough to eliminate the security threat due to having the MSJVM still on your machine. And it won't mess up IE's ability to run applets with Sun Java. If you don't feel comfortable editing your Registry, you can skip that step as well, and you'll still disable your MSJVM. The most important step is probably just to delete the \%systemroot%\java folder, which is either C:\Windows\Java or C:\WINNT\Java on most computers. And if you'd rather not do that by hand, use the JVM Clean tool available at http://www.physci.org/jvmclean.jsp which cleans out all the files from that folder.

Anonymous User -April 03, 2005

How to delete the \%systemroot%\java folder. I failed using search for files or folders program.

Anonymous User -April 13, 2005

Microsoft simply wants java to die and will do what it can to kill it without getting pulled into court over it. I was getting multiple javascript errors in IE until I uninstalled MSVM, and now it runs beautifully. Your mileage may vary.

Anonymous User -April 18, 2005

If you use the MSJVM removal tool applets wont work unless before installing the SUN JRE you delete the following key in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608500}. This is the key which directs IE to the JVM installation on your system but this is not removed by the MSJVM removal tool or overwritten by the SUN JVM if it is already present. However if it is removed manually before installing the Sun JVM then the Sun installer adds the correct key for the SUN Java insrallation and all is well. This is better explained here: http://www.oit.state.pa.us/oaoit/cwp/view.asp?a=172&q=194113&oaoitNavDLTEST=%7C9138%7C The MSJVM Removal tool is available from here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4158.html

I was the anonymous poster from April 03, 2005 who advised skipping the first step (RunDll32 command) of the original manual procedure, claiming that it suffers from the same bug as Microsoft's MSJVM removal tool. It turns out I was wrong. The poster from May 04, 2005 was correct, in that the bug in Microsoft's removal tool is its failure to delete registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608500}. The RunDll32 command in the manual procedure does NOT suffer from this bug, as it properly deletes this registry key. If you've run the Microsoft removal tool then, to restore IE's ability to run applets, you must manually delete the above registry key. Then either install Sun Java or, if Sun Java is already installed, launch Java Plug-in in the Windows Control Panel, click the Browsers tab and enable Internet Explorer. If you've followed the manual procedure at the beginning of this long string of comments (including all steps), you've removed your MSJVM more completely than if you'd used the Microsoft tool. And IE will be able to run applets once you install Sun Java (or if Sun Java was already installed, once you enable IE using the Java Plug-in control panel).

Working with Windows 98SE... If you install Sun's JRE, then uninstall Microsoft Virtual Machine, applets may not load. An "Install on Demand" dialog may appear asking you to install Microsoft's virtual machine. (Of course, when you click on the install button, it transports you to a webpage saying the Virtual Machine is no longer available.) One person suggested disabling the "Install on Demand" feature in Internet Options to get the applets to load. This did not work for me. What I did to fix the problem is: open Control Panel open Java click the advanced tab click the + next to " tag support" uncheck "Internet Explorer" click the apply button make sure all browers are closed check "Internet Explorer" click the apply button (The "Install on Demand" feature may remain enabled) I guess this was the problem: after uninstalling Microsoft Virtual Machine, Sun's Virtual Machine had to be reinstated as the interpreter for tags.

Dear Web Developer. I would gues that you used a "NOBR" or some such formatting technique on the command line instruction thus forcing the text to overflow the table boundries. In the future Please organize your flippin page layout. And ask your self and your "employer" what is more important, the content or the advertisement. ON Topic. Nice trick, it would seem, though that the topic ignored the many users who would loose functionalities due to their lack of knowledge of the Java Virtual Machine, and the relation to IE. I would hope that tips like these, in the future would anticipate a broader reach of the topic in order to notify users the effects of changes such as these, and maby cover those as well, or have links to somewhere that does... bcr
