A. Windows 2000 includes a Network Monitor agent for use with Network Monitor, but XP doesn't include such an agent. However, Microsoft included the netcap.exe utility as part of the Support Tools on the XP CD-ROM. Netcap is a command-line tool that provides capabilities similar to Network Monitor. On the first execution, Netcap installs the Network Monitor driver and binds it to all network adapters, which lets the full Network Monitor product operate against the machine.

If you want to remove the Network Monitor driver, simply type
c:\> netcap /remove
The tool is also useful for checking the index numbers of adapters. For example, you would use the following values to check the index numbers for the following adapters:
(default) 0 = ETHERNET (000625089EF6) Wireless Network Connection
1 = ETHERNET (000102220C06) Local Area Connection
2 = ETHERNET (1C1220524153) WAN (PPP/SLIP) Interface
Windows xp DOES INCLUDE a network monitor agent. It is installed in the dame manner as in Win2k.
How can one install the Microsoft Network Monitor application on XP worstation? It is not included in the "Add windows components" section. For windows 2000 I do have a "stand alone" setup program for it. Is there such a program for XP, or is the 2000 program good for XP as well?
You can copy the Windows 2000 Network Monitor to XP, and it works fine if you also copy "nmsupp.dll" from the Windows 2000 system directory into the same folder as "netmon.exe".

FORGET THIS. THIS IS NOT SO.
OK, so by itself copying the file doesn't work, but...
If you
(A) install Windows XP Support Tools off the CD,
(B)run "Netcap" to install the driver [hit the spacebar when the capture starts],
(C) copy nmsupp.dll file from a Server installation into System32, and
(D) copy the netmon folder from a Server installation into System32...it works like a champ.
