Windows XP: The Color Schemes That Never Were

If you're wondering why Windows XP is shipping with only three color schemes—blue, silver, and olive green—the answer is that Microsoft simply ran out of time to create more. One of the big complaints that Microsoft received from testers about XP beta 2 was that the Luna UI needs more color options. So, Microsoft set out to create several color schemes. However, the original versions of two such schemes—ruby and emerald—proved problematic for the vision-impaired. These two schemes will probably be available in the Plus! pack or perhaps for download from Windows Update when XP ships this fall. If you're unhappy with Luna's default colors, fear not: You'll soon have a rainbow of options from which to choose.

why can't people other than microsoft programmers create their own color schemes?

matt -November 14, 2003

they need black and white and smoke and transparent blue :)

Ricky -November 16, 2003

Where can I find these new color schemes at? Are there any yet?

Rebeckah -December 19, 2003

where can i find these color schemes at

mary -March 12, 2004

Im confused as to why a supposedly very technologically advanced company such as microsoft can't seem to create more than three color schemes. Kinda saddens me. :(

Fatal -April 03, 2004

I want more color schemes are there more out?

chris -April 14, 2004

there is software to create schemes for xp... google it

Adam -May 07, 2004

Ben -June 06, 2004

Anyone heard any news yet about official color schemes for windows xp?

Sk-san -June 10, 2004

No, but there was one released a couple of days ago. I installed it, it looks great! (it got online somehow, it is origanlyl made for Windows Media Center PCs)

Gal Yona -July 08, 2004

Then could you please possibly give us some hint as to how we could find it ?

Anonymous User -October 09, 2004

Yeah no kidding.. don't just say it looks great and then leave us high and dry! lol

Anonymous User -October 12, 2004

PLEASE MAKE Smoked Black or Black and silver... Im tired of this silver!! Blue and olive green is ugly!

Anonymous User -November 01, 2004

I smell BS on that one but perhaps just an idiot. Also, wasn't this article written in 2001? Maybe we will just have to wait for project "long horn"

Anonymous User -November 11, 2004

I agree. I could have made a colour scheme in 3 years and I'm blind, deaf, have no hands or arms and died last thursday. Microsoft....big bag of arse.

Anonymous User -November 19, 2004

I will make a program to edit these settings. Give me a few days, and I will post the link. Ofcourse its FREEWARE!

Anonymous User -December 18, 2004

So have you made a color scheme editor yet?

Anonymous User -January 09, 2005

hurry bitch make it

Anonymous User -January 14, 2005

Still waiting for new schemes either from microsoft or any third party software developer.

Anonymous User -January 15, 2005

so where can i find unofficial color schemes?

Anonymous User -January 16, 2005

i call BS. none of the color schemes in XP are suitable for the vision impaired. they would typically use one of the high contrast schemes under windows classic style. also, if 'windows classic style' is used in XP you can edit the colors of most of the display items. why can't that be done with the XP style? M$ wants to charge some money for themes...

Anonymous User -January 25, 2005

this is pants. everybody demands. nobody supplies. no answers. burn this site down!

Anonymous User -January 29, 2005

They are stored in the luna.msstyles files. to find others search for msstyles files or try something like style xp

Anonymous User -January 31, 2005

any way to "FiX" the schemes ?!

Anonymous User -February 01, 2005

man those links dont even fecking exist, what the hell is this, its been 3 years and no fecking answer, where the hell do you get the themes from just answer it all ready!

Anonymous User -February 23, 2005

The links DO exist. Look closely at them. For some reason that the administrators of this forum obviously overlooked, links are not being posted properly. There's a space included after each forward slash, or double set of forward slashes. Delete the spaces - I'm looking at both sites right now.

Anonymous User -February 23, 2005

Hey, guys ... is there a chance to get XP colors change to smth else than blue silver olive??? Not yet?

Anonymous User -February 24, 2005

You know, there is one good link on this page. www.skinbase.org/section.php?sections=msstyles that link works

Anonymous User -February 25, 2005

actually i haven't found anything on this site useful i'm looking to change just the frickin color sceheme, i know you can change your whole computer into a mac or whatever you want, but i just want to change the COLOR i don't care about making it look like "lord of the rings" or any windows themes. ty

Anonymous User -March 02, 2005

isn't there any regular themes that just change the color!!! i dont want to install crazy sh** that like style xp that is full of extreme spyware

Anonymous User -March 10, 2005

Can't someone give us a fricking site that changes the bloody color themes. We don't give a **** about themes, like 'The Lord Of The Rings' or 'GTA: San Andreas' We just want fricking colors!!!!

Anonymous User -March 13, 2005

yeh same here, all i want is an alternative to blue, silver and green!

Anonymous User -March 15, 2005

Totally agree... People can rob banks and hijack planes but they can't come up with a frickin' color scheme!!!

Anonymous User -March 15, 2005

Yeah really, if you have ever known about the cool color selection on Windows Media Player, i think it should be like that in a way, that you have slidable bars to select a cool color scheme for the windows bars. Or ever have it directly connected to it soo that the color schemes of both match. arg.. any color schemes left? -matt-

Anonymous User -March 20, 2005

Google for "WindowBlinds" It is good for changing color, icons animations etc. Make your Windows XP look like a Mac or make it look black :) Buy the enhanced version!

Anonymous User -March 28, 2005

Anonymous User -March 29, 2005

Anonymous User -April 10, 2005

Anonymous User -April 28, 2005

Good lord people, learn how to use a forum. You start from the top, read EVERY post until you find your answer. Posting the same question 100 times is not going to help anything. If somone has asked your question, look for an answer. On a forum like this with no time-based priority (ie. newer threads move up in a master list), there's no reason to say "hey, anyone find it yet?" because when someone does, and cares to share, they'll post it, regardless of how many people asked for it. While you're out looking for these colors like me, Google "internet etiquette" and select the wednet.edu link. Read through it and commit it to heart. This is a "new" form of communication, so you have to learn the language.

Anonymous User -April 28, 2005

how do i installa skin i got off of skinbase.org?

Anonymous User -May 19, 2005

thats it!! I am officially swiching over to linux!! take that mr gates!!!

Anonymous User -May 21, 2005

We're still waiting, Microsoft. Where are those colour schemes?

Anonymous User -May 24, 2005

http://winxp.rb-338.com/ go here. its cool.

Anonymous User -June 09, 2005

You guys are retard, those lines lead to Programs that force windows to totally change the theme. Those program will **** up your PC in a matter of months, nevermind slow it down totally... I know this is hard to understand.... Default Windows Theme ...but different color schemes... not hard...

Anonymous User -June 16, 2005

Windows Themes slow down Windows. Period. We are talking about new Color Schemes for default WnXP themes, and all the links in this forum lead to Skin progs heavy with spyware 3rd party progs that will mess your windows badly. People posting Skin programs MUST be stupid (to be in this forum, which is NOT about skins) or the owners/coders of those spyware xit - FU** OFF! Somehow http://winxp.rb-338.com/ is difrent, but I couldnt get a single one to work. (you are supose to use the files on c:\windows\resources\themes by the way, well any files that are suposed to appear in this forum... somewhere in the future) Is there a single soul out there who can give us the solution to extra color schemes other than blue, silver or olive green? Thats all we ask... nothing more. Thanks. Pitanga

Anonymous User -June 18, 2005

this forsum is exactly what i've been loking for. coz i'm sick of the windows colours too.. it amazes me just how simple changing colours was in windows 2000 and win 98 and yet the most advanced windows at the moment.. xp is so backward is this very simple way.. ithis is giving me a headache.

Anonymous User -June 19, 2005

ive only used default blue and silver I aint even gonna use dookie green which idiot made that one?

Anonymous User -June 20, 2005

Why can't you pick a color out of the color palette then it automatically changes like on the Media Player? Or perhaps an entire customization page, so you can pick multiple colors?

Anonymous User -July 12, 2005

When can we have more colors?

Anonymous User -August 07, 2005

iv read through this forum and there isnt really an answer.....guesss we'll have to wait for longhourn or a styleXP without all the spyware.

Anonymous User -August 19, 2005

Sigh, I totally feel you guys. Having 3 color schemes to choose from left me using StyleXP which sucks. There must be some whiz programmer that can hack the default theme to change the color. *fingers crossed*

Anonymous User -August 20, 2005

none of ur fu*king comments help all u do is post the same comments over and over. if someone has figured out a way to change the schemes then it would be all ova the net not on a crappy *** forum like this

Anonymous User -August 21, 2005

You lied! Big Time. The 'only' additional schemes I've seen are in the purchased Plus Pack.

benhereb4@gmx.net -September 11, 2005

http://www.tgtsoft.com/ I JUST FOUND THAT, LOOKS LIKE THERES A PROGRAM THAT YOU CAN DOWNLOAD TO ADJUST THE THEMES AND SCHEMES!

kokes -November 24, 2005

lucasrogerson -January 12, 2006

lucasrogerson -January 12, 2006

blue silver and olive green get tiring you know how about black or red purple i dont know any will work

lucasrogerson -January 12, 2006

Instead of complaining about MS not having more than 3 schemes, why don't you expend this energy and create your own. If you can post a message you can figure out how to create your own schemes

bimcgi -April 01, 2006

Anyone still interested in this? "Instead of complaining about MS not having more than 3 schemes, why don't you expend this energy and create your own." I haven't complained, but I found this thread when I recently switched my home PC to XP and wasn't happy with the choices either. So I did go out and do something. (BTW: "If you can post a message you can figure out how to create your own schemes". It wasn't overly difficult, but I wouldn't nescessarily put the difficulty level the same as posting. LOL) If anyone is interested, I have created what I call the "Jewels" collection. 7 new Color Styles based soly on Luna, where the only changes are the main colors (no pics, graphics, sounds, icons, cursors, etc. ONLY colors). I'm happy to share my work if anyone wants it. No charge, but at your own risk. If you are just looking for some new colors, check out my "Jewels" page on my site for my writeup and downloads. Enjoy! (If the link posts and stays!) LOL http://www11.asphost4free.com/kaptaincaveman/Jewels.htm

kaptaincaveman -September 25, 2006

I was interested and have successfully downloaded and installed in Dec 2006. I applaud your efforts. It does exactly what it says - without any impact on the system. Only small issue is that the quoted web address has an incorrect uppercase "J". This initially stopped my browser from finding the site. URL should read: http://www11.asphost4free.com/kaptaincaveman/jewels.htm Follow the instructions and it will work. (XP Pro SP2)

zargon -December 19, 2006

kaptain cavemen website is down :(. Google has a backup of the original page, but not the jewels.txt Does anyone have that jewels file with the additional color schemes. Yes, I don't want styleXP, windowblinds all those other 3rd party stuff, all I want is a simple way to have different colors, that's it... How simple is that? :)
