June 2009 Reader Challenge

What do you know about sharing folders in Windows Vista? Solve this month's UPDATE challenge, and you might win a prize!

Take the June 2009 Reader Challenge:
I've received a number of e-mail messages from readers asking for help when sharing folders in Windows Vista. Generally, the theme of the message is "I want to share a subfolder in my Documents folder with other users. When I use the Share command in the right-click menu, I don't have a way to name the share (usually I don't want to use the subfolder name).

“What's worse is that users have a hard time finding the share in their Network folders. They see a share named Users, and they have to drill down, one folder at a time, to get to Users\\Documents\.

“Windows XP was better; you could name the share and other network users could see the share in My Network Neighborhood as soon as they opened the listing for my computer."

There's a way to make sharing folders in Vista work the way it does in Windows XP. Do you know how?

How to Play:
Email your solution (don't use an attachment) to challenge@windowsitpro.com by June 28, 2009. You MUST include your full name, street mailing address (no P.O. Boxes), and a telephone number. Without that information, we can't send you a prize if you win, so your answer is eliminated, even if it’s correct.

I choose winners at random from the pool of correct entries. I’m a sucker for humor and originality, and a cleverly written correct answer gets an extra chance. Because I receive so many entries each month, I can't reply to respondents, and I never respond to a request for an email receipt.

Look for the solutions to this month's problem at the bottom of this page on June 29.

May 2009 Reader Challenge Winner:
Congratulations to Dale Cook of Texas, the winner of our May 2009 Reader Challenge. He wins a copy of Windows Server 2008: The Definitive Guide from O'Reilly Media.

Answer to June 2009 Reader Challenge:

To share a folder in Vista the way you share a folder in Windows XP, right-click the folder and choose Properties. Go to the Sharing tab and click Advanced Sharing. Name the share and set permissions the same way you did it in Windows XP.
