A. A corrupt temporary file can often cause the disk cleanup utility to hang. To resolve this problem, try deleting all temporary files on your computer by performing the following steps:

  1. Close all running applications.
  2. From the Start menu, click Run and type
    %temp%
to open the Temp folder on your computer.
  3. Type Ctrl+A or from the Edit menu click Select All to select all the files, press Delete, then click Yes to the confirmation.
  4. Close Windows Explorer.
  5. Open the Control Panel Internet Options applet.
  6. Select the General tab, then click Delete Files.
  7. Select the "Delete all offline content" check box, then click OK.

You should now be able to run the Disk Cleanup tool.

Why does the Disk Cleanup tool in Windows XP and Windows 2000 hang when I try to start it?

Cleanup Acutally Hangs Up because Windows is going through a File Compression Method to determine how much space you can save or (make) on your drive if you allow it to compress old files.

You can turn this feature off. Go to explorer and right click on the C:Drive , Go to properties - and make sure that the COMPRESS DRIVE TO SAVE DISK SPACE IS UNCHECKED.

You can also turn this off (This is the method I used), but going into the registry and deleting the entry for disk Caching. There is a step by step procedure for this - do a google search for this process. Once you turn of Disk Compression - Disk Cleanup works superfast!

I tried the procedure, but it still hangs. When I say "cancel" in Disk Cleanup, the box goes away, but cleanmgr process still keeps running in the background. Any other thoughts are appreciated.. Thanks!

This is the same info I got from the Microsoft Knowledgebase. I've run these sequential steps several times, but it is not working. Disk cleanup still hangs. I have Windows XP Pro.
What should I do next??
Thanks

This was really helpful.

This is a known bug with Win2k and WinXP. The machine is hanging at Disk Cleanup because it is trying to tell you what old files should be compressed... Bad Thing.
Run regedit, move to the top of the hives (to My Computer)
Press Ctrl-F (Find) and type "Compress Old" (no quotes)
When regedit finds the offending key, press the Delete key and Enter. Disk Clean will fly now!

Did not work. There is disk activity for a few minutes and than nothing happens. I'm able to cancel so computer is not hanging.

This worked great for my situation.
John, try defragging your hard drive, I've read that can also help.

Chuck, your probably the only dummy here, don't dismiss a possible fix just because it didn't happen to apply to your situation. JMO
