Microsoft on Wednesday announced that it was laying off 800 more workers, bringing its previously-announced layoff plan to a close. Microsoft revealed in January that it would lay off about 5,000 people this year as part of efforts to reduce costs. But with this last round of layoffs, the total is closer to 5,800.

"Earlier this year, we announced that in order to reduce costs, increase efficiency and prioritize our focus areas, we would eliminate approximately 5,000 positions by June 2010," a Microsoft spokesperson said. "Today, we are eliminating around 800 positions spread across multiple businesses and locations and have completed our reduction plan sooner than we had anticipated 11 months ago."

"At the same time, we continue to hire in priority areas, but also understand that continuing to manage our businesses closely, as we always do, can mean additional headcount adjustments," he added. Microsoft has actually added 2,000 new workers this year as well, with hires for important business markets such as web search.

People affected by the layoffs come from around the company, including about 200 in Microsoft's Redmond headquarters. With the conclusion of its first-ever massive-scale layoff, Microsoft still has about 90,000 employees worldwide.

Why, oh why, is M$ laying off. Is the loss of morale worth the extra profits? They already have more cash than they know what to do with.

Had this been any company other than MS, the headline would have read, "Company X fires 16% more employees than anticipated".

Either that, or he would have shouted from the rooftops, "Microsoft Exceeds Expectations by 16%!"

Spin, spin, spin.

microsoft has been hiring just as strongly. thousands of jobs show up in their careers portal and new appear every day. if anything these layoffs are good news.it prunes the company from excess fat and middle managers which don't do anything but go home with fat checks after reading outlook emails and going to meetings each day.

There are rumors swirling around many cities that major layoffs are coming. And now, it was announced that the first Microsoft layoffs in the company's history were about to begin, with 5,000 employees about to get the axe. That wasn't good enough, apparently, as the suits that populate the office needed a few more ivory back scratchers, and the number of Microsoft layoffs has been expanded, as they are eliminating 800 more jobs. Microsoft, based in Redmond, Washington, one of the largest employers of the greater Seattle area, has also posted contractor jobs to make up for the losses, but pay less. However, the workers that gave the company its success by their labor are rewarded for service with more Microsoft layoffs and anxiety about when they get their next pay day.
